Guest Post: Hobie - Doubleheaders of the 3rd kind

Mack,

Didn’t read John’s “more game ideas” until early evening when, I’ve found, the comment thread falls fallow.  But I have a ridiculous idea to run by you.

I love single-pay double headers.  Look forward to the April rainout rescheduled in July as such. and have attended often.  (Sunday DHdrs at Ebbets were almost a routine, with various aunts, uncles & great-uncles marching me the 2 blocks up Bedford from Lincoln Rd).  And you may remember I proposed an “Ernie Banks Day” of 15 MLB double headers to launch All-Star Week some years back.

But trying to role-play as greedy owner, the temptation to double-charge in that dreaded “Day/Night DH” format would seem to be overpowering.  So how about this off-the-wall service to fan appetite, player opportunity and owner greed:  Double-headers of the Third Kind: Home/Away.

Expand the ML Roster (i.e 40-man) to 50 (or 60).  Have split-squads as in Spring Training but playing the same team home & home on the same day.  Every gameday there would be a 25-man squad home game in every city for what I suspect will be less than half a normal season.  Roster would be fixed for each particular series but “home” & “road” squads could rotate in some fashion (or not).  H/A rosters could be reshuffled for the next series.  I’m thinking one 3G (3H/3A) in-division set and one 2H/2A interdiv or interleague series per week.  The 2H/2A might be different opponents.  I’ll waste my time coming up with an 8 week (5H/5A) 80 game schedule since I have plenty of time on my hands.  You work it out with the owners & PA.

OK, no ST, no March Madness, no hockey, Champions League, etc. (don’t care about NBA)… you get a little stupid.

Gotta wash my hands.

  1. I honestly can not see any baseball being played in the USA this year.

  2. Someone should be organizing an online version of a baseball game with actual players performing as themselves. Hey, it would give us something to watch and to pass the time.

  3. Watching last year's games on SNY has been fun. I rarely go to games. And they seem to only put on games the Mets won. Low stress.

  4. If they do play games, that Hobie idea would sure be radical. I just wonder if they somehow do 10 games a week with 35 man rosters.

We are in uncharted territory, folks. If the season only lasts two months, can we say it flu by?

  5. Hobie, Like the idea. How about playing some of those games in Minor League Ball Parks to stimulate those fan bases? Syracuse and Binghamton would love it.
