PG - Tommy Mace, RHP, Florida
In what
was unquestionably a pitcher’s duel between Miami and Florida, Gators starting
pitcher Tommy Mace put forth one of the best starts of his career to date as
the 6-foot-6 righthander was masterful on the bump. Mace struck out eight
batters while allowing just one earned run over seven innings on two hits and
only a handful of hard hit contact all night.
Mace has
seen significant innings since he arrived on campus a couple of years ago and
it’s been fun to track his progress as he’s developed into what should be a
fairly high draft pick. The delivery is very athletic and his slender build
coupled with his arm speed portends velocity gains once he gets into a professional
system and can focus full-time on baseball. There’s some length to the arm
stroke but it’s very loose and he whips the arm through very quickly and
consistently. He’ll wrap his wrist occasionally on the breaking ball, but for
the most part he did an excellent job replicating not only his arm action but
his slot on all of his pitches.
D1 - In one of Week Two’s most
intriguing series, No. 22 North Carolina and MVC favorite Dallas Baptist opened
their series with a doubleheader split Saturday. The Tar Heels dominated the
opener 9-0 behind another strong start from two-way wonder Joey Lancellotti (7 IP,
4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K), who helped his own cause with an RBI double. UNC pitchers
stretched their scoreless streak to 25 consecutive innings before DBU finally
got on the board in the third inning of Game Two. The Patriots took control in
that one with four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Ryan Wrobleski’s
go-ahead two-run homer. Chad Arnold allowed two runs over five innings to earn
the win.

D1 - As Texas Tech prepared for the
start of the 2020 campaign back in January, the talk in Lubbock was that
righthander Bryce Bonnin was ready to take a big
step forward and become a potential staff ace for Tim Tadlock’s club.
He wasn’t perfect Saturday night in a 7-2 win over Stanford, but
he showed flashes of being that bonafide ace type of pitcher. In addition to
showing electric stuff against the Cardinal, he also overcame some early
adversity against the Cardinal.

Aaron Fitt’s thoughts on Miami after their 3-game loss this past weekend to
Florida:
I’m not even a little bit worried about Miami — that’s still
an Omaha team for me. They lost three very tight games (two in extras) to an
elite opponent; they’ll be just fine, and I’m willing to wager they wind up as
a top-8 national seed. The starting pitching is elite, I still think the lineup
will be elite even without Freddy Zamora, and I think they’ve got enough pieces
in the bullpen to figure out that piece of it.
Does the team ever scout hitters?
