Tom Brennan - METS’ OUTSTANDING PITCHING

Image result for outstanding images

Yeah I know it’s early (about the 14th time I have written that recently), but the Mets' early-on pitching has been, for lack of a better word:

Outstanding.

Billy Crystal said it is simply marvelous.

To be able to call the Mets' pitching outstanding is, well, an outstanding thing to be able to do, if you ask me.

I have to say that once you take out the individuals who are not (most likely) going to make the 26 man roster, the results of the 26 man pitching so far as far exceeded my expectations.

Even quite a few of the folks who most likely will not make the 26 man roster come opening day are pitching very, very well.

But let’s take a look at the individuals who will comprise that most likely 26 man roster for a pitching perspective of the team's preparedness now, a few weeks ahead of when the team goes north.

(Stats thru Sunday):

1. PITCHERS DEFINITELY GOING NORTH, WITH THE POSSIBLE EXCEPTION OF THE REHABBING DELLIN BETANCES:

IP H R ER HR BB K
 Betances, D 0.1 1 3 2 0 2 1
 Brach, B 4 2 0 0 0 0 6
 DeGrom, J 3 1 0 0 0 0 2
 Diaz, E 2 4 2 2 0 0 1
 Familia, J 4 6 1 1 1 2 4
 Gsellman, R 6 3 1 1 0 1 3
 Matz, S 6 2 1 1 1 0 5
 Porcello, R 6 6 1 1 0 1 7
 Stroman, M 6.2 5 2 2 2 3 7
 Syndergaard, N 8 5 4 3 1 0 11
 Wacha, M 7.2 8 1 1 0 4 5
 Wilson, J 2 0 0 0 0 0 4
55.2 43 16 14 5 13 56

ERA?  2.28.  Nice.

2. PITCHERS WHO COULD BE IN THE 2020 CALL-UP GROUP:

IPHRERHRBBK

 Blackham, M 3.1 1 1 1 0 5 3
 Gonsalves, S 5 2 0 0 0 3 3
 Kilome, F 2 3 2 2 1 0 2
 Lockett, W 1.2 0 0 0 0 1 0
 Oswalt, C 4 5 1 1 0 0 1
 Peterson, D 6 5 1 1 0 3 6
 Ramirez, E 8 5 1 1 1 3 10
 Ryan, R 2.2 1 1 1 1 0 4
 Sewald, P 4 2 0 0 0 1 3
 Zamora, D 5 3 1 1 0 1 8
4227 8 8 3 17 40

ERA?  1.73.  Real Nice.

Nah, scratch that:

It's outstanding!

And, after the above stats, Monday's game?  Even more outstanding.

  1. Tom - so far I am most encouraged by Familia. Liked how he battled Saturday after allowing a HR and loading the bases with 2 Ks and a fly ball. Hope it is a sign that he is back to form.

It may be too much to ask that all three Familia, Diaz, and Betances are back to normal this year but is it too much to ask one or two come back?

  2. I said it when they signed him that Familia always failed in non-save situations. He was a different pitcher altogether and last year, whether it was the weight or the role, he performed to expectations as the set-up guy. Hopefully he's past the mental block.

  3. I have high confidence in Familia.

Diaz not quite as high, until he starts pitching more. Odd he has pitched so little.

Betances needs a 95+ velo to make me feel the same about him, but his slider has long been one of baseball's nastiest.

Hopefully, they will all succeed, to which I define success as a 3.50 ERA or better, and half the blown saves rate of 2019. Familia and Diaz were mid 5's last year on ERA, so 3.50 or better will really help.

Mets have 3.21 ERA after 18 games, 2nd best in baseball, and if you exclude the handful of high ERAs exclusively owned by prospects, they are below 2.00. WOW

  4. Lots of Familia-speak here.

I still think Diaz is going to have an all-star year.

    Dark horse... Brach

  5. BRACH LOOKING GOOD.

He was in awe of Jake's stuff, so he may do great, but he won't be the next deGrom.

  6. Mets have been called one of the best rotations in Baseball... Yes degron but THor has not been thor in 2 years, and really who is a absolute given in the entire staff (SP or RP) Betances is the one with the best tract record and he is still not ready...

this team had a hot second half but while that may be optimistic hoe many team have put together good 1/2 seasons... we are a wait and see team...

  7. The guy who could be make or break out of the bullpen might just be Michael Wacha.

  8. Eddie, it is certainly appropriate to doubt this staff after some of the meltdowns of the past few years - but all the signs are flashing bright green for the pitching staff right now.

haven't we all said that Spring training doesn't mean a thing? All we hope out of spring training is health...

  10. Dah Pitching.

Who had the most strikeouts to the number of innings pitched?

Give up yet? There are two pitchers close to one another. Don't look, guess!

A: Daniel Zamora is one and Thor the other.

    My point.

The Mets are crazy loaded with good pitchers, six starters and twelve relievers that are good too. My point is simply use some of the relievers to trade from depth.

  11. The Conforto Injury

Always tough to scratch off the batting lineup a HR batter like Michael is. But the Mets have enough good hitters, power bats, and backup outfielders to weather this storm.

Don't sweat the details. It's been covered.

    This 2020 now.

  12. I don't know if anyone or everyone knows this. But NYY Gary Sanchez spent the day resting in his room with a temperature and flu-like symptoms. Not good because if the nasty Coronavirus, then pretty much the whole NYY team could have been exposed.

Matt Harvey may be back in-play.

  13. Three things the virus does not like.

    1. Sunlight, 2. Temperature and 3. Humidity It almost sounds tropical like, doesn't it.

The virus can remain intact at 39 degrees Fahrenheit or 50 degrees Fahrenheit ... But at 86 degrees Fahrenheit then you get inactivation.

They say the masks don't work. But then again too, they said that the Titanic would not sink. So go figure. I am not Einstein here.

Maybe try keeeping your immunity system as optimal as possible, for you. Get your sleep in. Eat good "for you stuff." And exercise as best that you can. Start out slowly, especially if you have been hibernating all winter like Gentle Ben. Talk to your doctor first regarding all of this. Don't go it alone.

The saving grace here may be that Spring is about to be sprung.

D3 supplementation, and your normal daily vitamins, could help, but don't try to overtake things you are not certain of with side effects. Every pharmaceutical and supplement has side effects, that I know of anyway. So do your research online and ask your doctor with things you are looking to maybe try, always, always, always. And look up (or discuss with your doc) possible side effects with medications (that you might already be on) for potential harmful interactions that could seriously harm you.

    The usual here:

Washing your hands often (20 seconds at least) and do under the nails too with your other hands nails. (See "Emergency" reruns here for this) Avoiding as much exposure to other people (who may or may not be sick) can be important. Try to limit your exposures if possible. BTW here, you can include your mother-in-law in this avoidance, it won't hurt much and I give you my implicit permission to. Not an easy thing to avoid people, like at work, religious services, and political rallies and such.

Periodically clean the things that have received much handling (doorknobs, public computer keyboards, and public toilet seat stuff) and be weary of the cough droplet exposures from uncaring people around you. And yes, not everyone is going to be careful about not spreading their germs around. I simply call these wonderful people "proști mari de grăsime." Ha!

Anyway, this is mainly how it passes from person to person.

Maybe too, try not to overuse the spraying of Lysol type disinfectants. Be generally speaking "methodical like" with it. But you don't want to drown the whole fam and neighborhood with the stuff or float grandpa down the driveway with it. Okay? Anything airborne can go right into the lungs. Understand this.

Talking to your doctor is so very key here with any potential ideas that any of us may have with this. Coronavirus. It's yuk stuff!
