We are
all still trying to make heads or tails out of baseball’s new coronavirus
edition of eligibility works in both high school and college baseball. Let’s
look at college today.
On
Monday, the NCAA voted to allow spring-sports students an additional year of
competition. This includes an extension of their period of eligibility due to a
loss of a year to the coronavirus crap.
The number
of players allowed on each team has also been increased. Currently, each
college is allowed 11.7 scholarships per team that can be distributed between
27 players, at a minimum of a 25% scholarship to all players.
The
real good news with the new rulings is that current college seniors will be
able to play another season if they chose. The set up of the next draft and how
many rounds it will be is still a work in progress, though I can’t see a clear
road for most of these seniors turning pro this year.
A lot
of draft eligible juniors will come back for another season. So will this
year’s seniors And what about high school seniors that want to play college
ball.
What a
mess.
Anthony Causi is a Mets photographer for the NY Post. I met him in camp
when he saw the call letters and ‘WKTU-FM Disco 92’ on the back of my
windbreaker. You see, his father, “Brooklyn’s Own Joe
Causi” worked together at that original disco radio station in NYC.
Tony
came down with the virus and it was reported that he was knocking on death’s
door. Well good new comes today from Cheri Golub:
Cherí Golub - @cherigolub
@ACausi is stable and
better today! His family thanks the Drs, nurses, & staff that are saving
his life at Northwell Manhasset! There’s still a VERY long road ahead but all
this love, support and prayers are helping him! His family feels blessed to
have all of u! #CausiStrong
Correction: The story has been updated to reflect that
players slated to play in the Dominican Summer League this year are not covered
by the announcement. Minor leaguers who had come to the U.S. and have been sent
back home to the Dominican Republic (and other countries) are included in those
being paid.
Mack – So, if you are from a Latin
American nation and have already played at, at least the rookie-GCL level,
everything is cool, but if you have only played from one of the two DSL teams,
jodete.
Speaks tons to the lack of both
concern and character of the Commissioner and the owners of baseball.
How The Coronavirus Pandemic Changes MLB's Economic Landscape
BA - a great ‘corona-ball’ Q and A that
includes this question:
Q - Will the Rule 5 draft eligibility age for draftees
remain the same in the event of a later draft date? (Currently a player's age
on or around June 5 determines his age for Rule 5 draft eligibility.)
A - That decision has not been made
yet, per an MLB spokesperson.
Q - If the international signing period is pushed back, as
the Commissioner has the power to do under the agreement, will international
signees’ Rule 5 eligibility be pushed back as well?
A - That decision has not been made
yet, per an MLB spokesperson.
Q - If the 2020 minor league season is canceled, will minor
league players be credited with a year of service time as it pertains to minor
league free agency?
A - That decision has not been made
yet, per an MLB spokesperson.
Mack-
Hope this cleared that up…

Just filed to @ap_sports: Rockies INF Daniel Murphy has donated $100,000 to @mtb_org to help minor league
players make ends meet with the season on hold.
So now we have Shin-Sin Choo and Daniel Murphy stepping up WHEN THE MAJOR LEAGUE BALLCLUBS DO NOTHING. It's truly shameful on MLB's part when they depend on the players to do what the league should be doing.
ReplyDeleteNot to defend owners, but no revenue and fixed costs could lead to owner failures.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, many very wealthy players who are unencumbered have no excuse not to help. Mike Trout can’t give $1 million? Max Scherzer? Etc.
Hey Tom -
ReplyDeleteScrew the owners. They have been ripping of the minor league players since they bought the team.
And BTW... screw the Player's Association for agreeing to this.
You want to make me smile? Send more team planes to China to buy and pick up masks.
And BTW... if it is that easy, why isn't there USAF C-141 planes doing this?
If Yogi were around, he would donate catcher's masks.
ReplyDeleteMack, not letting owners off the hook - if they aren't going to fail they need to shell out.
Listened to Stephen A. Bannon today - said he heard there are still flights between NY and Miami! He is advocating a hard lock down nationwide to bring this thing to its knees quickly, so our economy does not get permanently crushed. Half stepping this thing will only prolong it.
Road with the wife to our local liquor store to get grain alcohol. She is making hand sanitizer with it.
DeleteI stayed in car. She wore gloves and mask.
No one else in the store or in the parking lot had either on.
If the Dominican Republic gets the Coronavirus under control by the end of May, will they have a DSL this year?
ReplyDeleteInteresting question.
DeleteI assume they would but my money is on ni baseball anywhere this year.
I noticed that last year’s international signings by the Mets did not play in the DSL. At least most of them did not. They signed some more this spring. With another year possible of signings coming up this year how will they be able to handle some many players down there?
ReplyDelete(I love the intelligence of our readers)
DeleteMost 16 year old signees do go directly to the instruct camp in the D.R. for a year. Very few debut as a 16 year old.
I expect many of last year's players cut as well as far less filler signing.
My spreadsheet has 110 players signed by the Mets as international players
ReplyDeleteWow.
DeleteYour spreadsheet is the bomb.
As you can see, in a normal year this is overkill.
This next draft, coupled with your list, will probably result in the top talent being assigned to both teams + the GCL team.
Mack. The Patriots went with your suggestion. https://thehill-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/490767-new-england-patriots-plane-returning-from-china-with-over-1-million-n95?amp_js_v=a3&_gsa=1&&usqp=mq331AQFKAGwASA%3D#referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&_tf=From%20%251%24s&share=https%3A%2F%2Fthehill.com%2Fhomenews%2Fstate-watch%2F490767-new-england-patriots-plane-returning-from-china-with-over-1-million-n95
ReplyDeleteI have a question. Do you see baseball clubs signing a lot of free agents in this years draft for $20,000? If so do you think it will mostly be high school players who haven’t signed with a division 1 school?
ReplyDeleteRaw
DeleteMy guess is the high school seniors will get another year of eligibility and will wait a year for the big bucks.
The same for college juniors.
DeleteThere simply is too much being lost here to ignore it.
Watch for the MLB to fill up with college seniors and then discard them for a year.
I do not understand about your comment about high school seniors having any other year of Elibility. Don’t they graduate? Aren’t they going to college or junior college. Are you saying they can go to division 1 school and then get drafted as a freshman.
