Mack – FWIW – Coronavirus Edition - Daily Thoughts 4-7

Good morning.

By now, you have finally figured out that I write today’s edition on yesterday, meaning, there is a one-day delay with this information. There wasn’t much out there on Sunday so this reports a two-day delay.

Some of it repeats the same thing said in a Breakfast Link. That’s fine. More is better here.

There seems be a turn in the amount of deaths each day being reported. Spain, Germany, and even the good ole NYC had a down day on Sunday. Could be an early sign on a recovery.

It's certainly encouraging that from the 3/31 to 4/5 IHME models, the projected deaths have gone down.

Ohio is of special interest to me -- it's the state I'd die in, so there's obvious self-interest -- the projected deaths have dropped from just under 2K to 544.
It's hard to classify this kind of thing as good news when it's still projecting nearly 82,000 people to die by 8/4 in the US, but still, that's 11-12K fewer people, which would be great.

Unfortunately I have to share this update.  At 10:45am this morning a sweet, caring 81 year old hard working career businessman and family man originally from Denmark passed away. Stay safe everyone.  Kinda think I'm done with social media for tonight.

So my former neighbor has........it........ he’s in the hospital using a ventilator and is elderly. His wife is in isolation awaiting test results. They've treated my family and especially my daughter like a princess her whole life showering her with gifts, thoughts and love

We are all in this fight together. Let’s do more than just stay at home. Text “Covid Heroes” to 24365 and donate something today.  All funds will be used for PPE, meals & requests from our heroes. God bless the world.

Metsmerized - Joe D - @MetsmerizedJoeD

For almost 16 years I've written about the Mets every single day, never once running out of things to say. I loved every second of it.

Now with my world in a virtual lockdown, I have all the time in the world to write. But my mind is blank and I feel so empty.

It sucks...

Q: Where does the Mets rotation rank without Thor? Top ten still?
Ben Clemens: Depth Charts has them 8th without Thor. That seems plausible to me. They still have a really good top two; Stroman is if anything underrated still. And they have acceptable major leaguers as depth, which is a nice thing that many teams just don’t have.

  1. The Mets could survive with an 8th place starting rotation if the offense stays keyed in. That combination of scoring and pitching is a good one.

    I agree.

Though I find it hard to project any pitching staff after this elongated delay in the season.

  3. Good news for NYC, Europe. Long Island where I live is now becoming the epicenter. Cases are spiking.

Went shopping yesterday. Hoping it lasts me a while, but probably not more than a week.

How does Cuomo say things are going well in NYC when you had the highest amount of deaths yesterday than any other day of this mess.

  5. 800 deaths is bad...how do we get it down to 8?

  6. Mack:

The amount of new hospitalizations and ICU cases has decreased the past few days, and the number of discharges has gone up. The percentage of capacity in hospitals has also improved.

Deaths are a lagging indicator. So, if the hospital cases keep dropping, the death rate should begin to decline in a few days.

And, no, I am far from a big fan of Andy Cuomo. Hope you folks in the rest of the country don't get the silly idea to draft him as a Democratic nominee for president.

  7. Good time in Suffolk to cut your caloric intake. Stretch those food supplies out. Lose the gut.
