John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 5/23/2020

Good Morning, Happy Memorial Day weekend, it’s the anniversary of Carlos Beltran’s 16th inning homer against the Phillies in 2006, and MLB will present a new economic proposal to players on Tuesday.

SNY.TV: Latest on negotiations for 2020 MLB season: League will present new economic proposal to players on Tuesday. SNY Insider Andy Martino previously reported on Thursday that MLB would likely make its first economic proposal to the players in the next few days, and that an agreement on resuming the season could come soon after...agents speculated to Martino that it will involve a modest across-the-board pay cut that includes deferrals, with Martino noting that outcome would look better to players than the 50-50 revenue-sharing idea that has been speculated on.

Mets Links:

Mike Puma NY Post: Luis Rojas has a big fan in ex-Mets skipper Terry Collins. “I saw him take guys out of games when they didn’t hustle and they didn’t make a big deal about it. I think his demeanor will be good for the guys in New York because he’s got basically a little bit of a veteran club…” Luis Rojas managed Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Dominic Smith, Amed Rosario and Michael Conforto in the Mets minor leagues.

SNY.TV: Mets' odds to win 2020 World Series have recently improved. Shortly after news came out that Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard would undergo Tommy John surgery, New York's odds to win the World Series sat at +1800, the seventh-best in baseball.  Mets' odds to win the World Series are now +1400, per PointsBet, the sixth-best odds (with them jumping the Minnesota Twins in that regard).

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets and Yankees likely to do spring training 2.0 in Florida, sources say. “Mets tentatively plan to reconvene and work out at their Clover Park facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida, to prepare for the regular season, sources said. The facilities aren’t as great as the regular ballpark, though $57 million of renovations completed in February helped close the gap. Among the cons to returning to Florida is the potentially miserable weather, including heat, humidity and thunderstorms.”

MLB.com: Did Mets win the Mike Piazza trade? Writer Thomas Harrigan makes the case that while the Mets won the trade, the Marlins made out pretty good as well.

Alexis Farinacci Mets Minors.net: 2020 MLB Mock Draft Selections Beginning to Take Shape. “With the no. 19 overall selection in the 2020 MLB Draft, recent mock drafts by Baseball America and MLB Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo have the Mets slated to select University of Texas commit, Jared Kelley, a right-handed pitcher out of Refugio High School in Texas and member of the 2018 18U USA National Team.’

Elite Sports NY: The universal DH will not solve all of the New York Mets’ problems. “Adding the DH this season will allow the Mets to keep one defensive liability’s bat in the lineup while not suffering on the field. With all the uncertainty in and around the Mets roster right now, that’s not nearly enough.”

Mets.com: Each MLB team's best Draft of all time. Mets: 1982- Dwight Gooden took baseball by storm as a 19-year-old in 1984 -- two years after the Mets had taken him with the No. 5 overall pick in the ’82 Draft – to win NL Rookie of the Year honors before capturing the circuit’s Cy Young Award the following year with an MLB-best 1.53 ERA and 268 strikeouts. He accrued 41.6 of his 48.2 career WAR in New York, going 157-85 with a 3.10 ERA and 67 complete games over 11 seasons. The Mets’ ’82 Draft also produced right-hander Roger McDowell (third round), a 12-year big league pitcher, and catcher Greg Olson (seventh round), who would become an All-Star with the Braves in 1990. Southpaw Randy Myers, taken in the June Draft-Secondary Phase, was a 15.1 WAR performer who saved 347 games across 14 big league seasons, five of which came with the Mets.

Mets.com: These NL East fielders can flash the leather. For Mets: Luis Guillorme “Featuring some of the softest hands in the game, Guillorme is a smooth fielder capable of playing second base, third base and shortstop. In limited time at the big league level, he’s committed just two errors in 242 1/3 innings.”

NY Post: Noah Syndergaard sued for missing $27K rent for Tribeca apartment. “After signing up for the rental, Syndergaard ‘decided not to take possession of the Leased premises’…the court documents say. The landlord notified Syndergaard on April 17 that he had defaulted on the lease, the papers said. Syndergaard and his lawyers responded April 30, notifying the owner that he ‘has no intention of taking possession of that subject premises and the landlord is hereby free to re-rent it as he sees fit,’ according to the suit.”

MLB LINKS:

USA Today: Retired agent Barry Axelrod has a solution if MLB, union can't agree on economic proposal. “I know I’m talking about other people’s money here, but there’s plenty of money to divide up and play. Figuring how to divide it up is the issue. So let’s deal with the money later on. Don’t let the numbers stop you. You could pay the players some sort of minimum, restart the season, and figure out what you owe down the line.”

Yahoo Sports: Is that World Series champ legit? 3 questions on how a shortened MLB season would be remembered. 1. Would you consider the champion of a 78- to 82-game season a legitimate World Series winner?; 2. If things changed, as they are prone to do in an unpredictable pandemic, how many games would each team need to play for you to consider this a "real" baseball season?; 3. What's the best team that could win the World Series but still lead you to question the rigor of the season's attempt to identify a champion?

MLB.com: The best games by 1 batter for every club. For the Mets: Edgardo Alfonzo – “Aug. 30, 1999 at Astros. Only 13 Mets players have hit three home runs in a game. Only two have collected six hits. Only one accomplished both feats on the same day. In a Monday night game at the Astrodome, Alfonzo went 6-for-6 with three homers, driving home five runs and scoring six times in the Mets’ 17-1 rout of the Astros.”

Minor League Links:

Tulsa World.com: Odds are long, but `glimmer of hope' remains for Drillers to play in 2020. Tulsa Drillers president and general manager Mike Melega describes himself as “an eternal optimist.” And Melega also is glad to borrow a line from a late New York Yankees legend he has long admired, Yogi Berra, who was known for saying “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over,” and apply it to when it comes to Minor League Baseball getting the green light from Major League Baseball to play in 2020.

Asian Baseball:

Aaron Altherr went 0 for 2 with a walk as the Hanwha Eagles beat the NC Dinos 5-3 yesterday. (Box score).

Today Aaron went 0 for 4 (Box Score) in the NC Dinos 3-0 win over the Eagles.

Rain washed out the games in the CPBL again today.

Mack’s Blast From The Past: May 23, 2014 – Mack posted Baseball America’s Mock Draft. “10. METS: In our first two projections we had the Mets selecting Oregon State outfielder Michael Conforto, who is generally regarded as the best college hitter in the class, but now it looks like they’ll choose between Trea Turner or Newcomb if they are available. Projected Pick: LHP Sean Newcomb.”

New York Mets purchased
Jimmy Piersall from the Washington Senators on May 23, 1963.

New York Mets claimed Aaron Altherr on waivers from the San Francisco Giants on May 23, 2019.

1963
Mets first baseman Gil Hodges is immediately named as the manager of the Senators, replacing Mickey Vernon, when the teams complete the deal that sends Jimmy Piersall and a player to be named later to New York. The 33 year-old part-time outfielder, who will bat only .194 in 40 games for his new team, will be released in July after drawing the ire of manager Casey Stengel for running the bases backward to celebrate his 100th career home run.
1965
Mets' outfielder Ron Swoboda takes his position wearing a batting helmet - on his foot. After kicking the protective headgear, which gets stuck on his spikes, manager Casey Stengel ordered the young player to go out to the field.

2004
Kaz Matsui, who surpasses Tommy Agee's 1969 team record, sets a franchise mark with his fifth leadoff home run of the season, becoming the first Mets player to accomplish the feat in consecutive games. The 28 year-old Japanese shortstop is also the first big leaguer to have his first five career round-trippers be hit batting first in the first inning of a game.
2011
In a profile piece written for The New Yorker magazine, Fred Wilpon makes some very candid comments about some of the 'stars' on his payroll. The embattled Mets owner is critical of the often injured Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran, and calls David Wright a nice kid, but "not a superstar".

1999 The Mets rally for 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to defeat the Phillies and Curt Schilling‚ 5 - 4.

2004: The Mets down the Rockies‚ 4 - 0‚ as Tom Glavine hurls a one-hitter. Glavine loses his no-hitter with two outs in the 8th inning as Kit Pellow doubles. Kaz Matsui leads off the game with a homer for New York‚ the 5th time he has done so this year to tie Chili Davis for the most leadoff homers for a National League rookie. He hit one yesterday as well.

2006: Carlos Beltran hits a two-run home run in the bottom of the 16th inning that gives the Mets a 9 - 8 victory over Philadelphia. The game lasts 5 hours, 22 minutes, has 522 pitches and is the longest for the Mets since 1995.

2010: The Mets win their first subway series against the crosstown Yankees since 1998 with a 6 - 4 victory. Jason Bay homers twice - only his second and third long balls of the year - against CC SabathiaJohan Santana is the winner and Francisco Rodriguez picks up the save by striking out Alex Rodriguez with two men on to end the game.

2019: Gomez's 3-run HR in 8th lifts Mets past Nats - 5/23/19.

  1. The Koreans are apparently catching up to Aaron Altherr.

That 1962 video - I would love to see SNY put on some 1962 games. It would be like watching the History Channel.

Noah has deep pockets and the landlord wants some. We'll see how that goes.

Nice 1982 draft - need one like that this year.

I hear Ruben Hurricane Carter will be attending spring training games with the Mets in June in Florida. Let's go Mets!

  2. Tom,

Still early on Altherr in Korea, just 3 weeks in. He needs to work on some things as he tries to get back to his 2017 season - 19 Homers, 65 RBIs, .272/.340/.516. The Mets analytics staff were high on him last year when the Giants released him and the Mets signed him. Hopefully, he can get it together.

Wish teams made deals with Taiwan and Korea and sent minor league players there. It is a shame they may loose an entire year of their development.

    1. Those players can sign with Asian teams on their own and then choose a ML affiliation of they are successful there.

  4. John, enjoy the hiatus.

Altherr was just 49 for 304 (.161) with 116 Ks over the past two seasons. Brutal. That seems irreparable to me. He'd need to add 39 points just to get back to .200. To get back to a tolerable average (say .230), he would have to add 70 points.

  5. Peep Mangual. Of whom one sports writer said: "He can get to any fly ball hit to centerfield...and drop it!"

  6. Upcoming season perspective: in NYS, daily deaths were 800 in mid April, just 84 today. That's a 93% drop. Suffolk, with 1.5 million people. Just 8 deaths yesterday. Heck, that's a shoot out in Chicago.

Where will it be in 6 weeks on July 4? Could some fans in fact be allowed to attend, if it is dropping that fast? Seemed unthinkable to me 10 days ago, now I wonder.

  7. Not sure Tom. There could be spikes once social distancing gets relaxed. I think the phased-in approaches make sense. Also, your idea about playing in Binghamton and Syracuse where the cases are load also makes a lot of sense.

  8. Once the social distancing gets relaxed, It would be make sense to continue to use some caution for a while.
