Mets Links:

Ken Davidoff Ny Post: Noah Syndergaard retort underlies crucial week in baseball. In a back and forth with a tweeter over the rent dispute Noah posted: “You mean like MLB did to every Player this contract year due to the COVID pandemic? Which the players negotiated and [expected] to be paid on a [prorated] basis per [game] played because it’s fair for both parties? Like that? Did I scream BUT MY CONTRACT? No.”

Mike Puma of the NY Post shares his dream 2022 Mets lineup: “Nolan Arenado becomes the Mets third baseman, rounding out an infield that includes Pete Alonso at first, Jeff McNeil at second and Amed Rosario at shortstop. Robinson Cano is now sharing DH duties with J.D. Davis, who still plays left field on a part-time basis. But the primary left fielder is Michael Brantley, with Ronny Mauricio in center and Michael Conforto in right. In J.T. Realmuto, the Mets finally have the star catcher they have craved since Mike Piazza’s departure. The rotation includes James Paxton pitching behind Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard, who agreed to a new contract before reaching free agency.”

LookIng at Nolan Arenado’s Home and Away splits, may cause one to pause:  Home: 129 HR, 446 RBI, .324/.380/.615 - .995 OPS; Away: 98 HR, 288 RBI, .265/.323/.476 - .799 OPS.

Mike Puma had three more what if’s in today’s NY Post: “What if Juan Lagares had started in center field in Game 1 of the 2015 World Series?  What if umpire Adrian Johnson had ruled “fair ball” on Carlos Beltran’s shot against Johan Santana on June 1, 2012? What if Duaner Sanchez wasn’t so hungry?

SNY.TV: 3 corner infield prospects Mets could target in 2020 MLB Draft. 3B Jordan Walker, DeCatur High School (GA); 1B/3B Blaze Jordan, DeSoto Central High School (MS); 3B Drew Bowser, Harvard-Westlake High School (CA).

AP News: Ex-Pirates infielder Kang banned 1 year by Korean league. The Korean Baseball Organization has suspended ex-Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang for a year and ordered him to perform 300 hours of community service over a series drunk driving cases.

So far today Aaron Altherr is 1 for 2 with a run scored (Box Score).

Chris Flexen, started this morning and has gone 5 innings so far, 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 Ks. (Box score).

Drew Gagnon is also on the mound today for the Kia Tigers.  After 3 innings, no runs on 1 hit, 2 Ks. (Box Score).

Mack’s Blast From The Past: May 26, 2014:  “Valverde released...Shortly after taking the loss in the Mets 5-3 loss to the Pirates. The Mets released 36 year old relief pitcher Jose Valverde. Monday Afternoon Valverde allowed 4 runs on 4 hits walking 1 in 1/3 of an inning allowing the Pirates to come from behind.  Valverde was 1-1 with the Mets with 2 blown saves and a 5.66 ERA....Vic Black will be returning from AAA Las Vegas to replace Valverde…Mack - The Valverde move should have been the day before they signed him. I keep saying... do not play anyone in 2014 that doesn't have either a contract for 2015, or a future on this team for 2015.”

In front of a meager crowd of 2,503 fans at Wrigley Field, the visiting Mets set a franchise record for runs scored when the team pummels the Cubs, 19-1. New York's 25 year-old first baseman Dick Smith, batting leadoff, becomes the first player in franchise history to collect five hits in a game, nearly 20% of season total of 21, when he collects a double, a triple, and three singles.

2011 - New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon sells a minority stake in the team to investor David Einhorn for $200 million. Wilpon's financial troubles, stemming from losses incurred in the Bernard Madoff fraudulent investment scheme, and from a $1 billion lawsuit from other victims of Madoff's fraud, have been much talked about in recent weeks; the sale should give him some financial breathing room.

2012: Mets P Johan Santana shows his old form, shutting out the Padres on 4 hits and fewer than 100 pitches. Scott Hairston hits a three-run homer in the 1st, soon followed by 32-year-old Vinny Rottino's first big league homer to stake Santana an early 4 - 0 lead. The Mets put the game away with 5 runs off Dale Thayer in the 8th, topped by a grand slam by Mike Nickeas.

  1. Hope yer weekend was good, Johnny.

I did a similar analysis article on Nolan Arenado when all the talk of getting him was swirling. Can he hit at Citi enough to warrant a mega-contract? Not so sure.

Mets should have gotten A Rod when they had the chance. He would have made them so much more dangerous. But who wants to win?

Unless Coronavirus is completely vanquished by this offseason, would the Mets have ever considered the Cano trade if it were this offseason? Way too much $$, so the answer is no.

One day closer to Mack's draft.

  2. I'm still opposed to mega contracts that tie too much of a budget into one or two players, especially outsiders. We don't know what will happen down the road, but how did the deals for Harper and Machado help their new teams in '19?

I believe that Puma' s "future Mets team" article was a projection for 2022, rather than 2020, but I don't agree with it anyway.

  3. Right you are Bill. Fixed it.

I also agree that mega contracts are not the way to go. I think Puma's projection has too many on the Mets in 2022 to make sense.
