John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 5/28/2020

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday to Binghamton Rumble Ponies Edgardo Fermin, and MLB Players want more games, no more salary cuts.

AP News: Players want more games, no more salary cuts. “A day after Major League Baseball proposed a sliding scale of salary slashing for a pandemic-delayed season with an 82-game schedule in ballparks without fans, the union held a conference call Wednesday that included its executive board, player representatives and alternate player representatives, the people said.”

Joel Sherman NY Post: MLB-union tensions escalate, but more is at stake in this fight. “So if MLB does not play, think of the stain on all the leadership involved. Think of the long-term financial impact to both sides of being out of sight until next spring training while driving even the most loyal fans out of their minds. Think about the opportunity missed to be the first major North American team sport to play — even if by just a few weeks — to audiences so sports crazed they are producing record TV numbers to watch two quarterbacks and two golfers play 18 holes.”

Mets Links:

Mike Lupica MLB.com: 33 years on, Tom Terrific still Mets' biggest icon.  Hall of Famer Tom Seaver mattered more than any player in the team's history.

Mets.com: Cohen, Rose, Randazzo share best Mets calls. Gary Cohen - Oct. 17, 1999, Robin Ventura’s grand-slam single; Howie Rose - Oct. 21, 2015, Mets win the National League pennant; Wayne Randazzo - Sept. 28, 2019, Pete Alonso breaks the MLB rookie home run record.

SNY.TV: Mets' Dominic Smith loves what he sees from Marcus Stroman's bullpens: 'He's nasty, man'.

Ryan Finklestein Metsmerized Online: Stroman Trade Suddenly Looks Like a Colossal Mistake. “Since Marcus Stroman makes between $10 and $20 million, he would receive 30% of his prorated salary. For an 81-game season, that would be around $2 million. With all that being said, it really doesn’t make much sense for Stroman to risk his health when he stands to potentially land a nine-figure contract on the open market anyway.”

SNY.TV: 5 outfield prospects Mets could target in 2020 MLB Draft. OF Austin Hendrick, West Allegheny High School (PA); OF Heston Kjerstad, Arkansas; OF Robert Hassell, Independence High School (TN); OF Pete Crow-Armstrong, Harvard-Westlake High School (CA); OF Daniel Cabrera, Louisiana State.

Rising Apple: Forgotten Mets History: Jason Bay’s brief time in the Flushing farm system.

Empire Sports Media: This is why former Mets’ pitcher Bartolo Colon wants another shot in the majors so badly. “Bartolo Colón wants to pitch 46 more for the record of most innings pitched by a Dominican pitcher, held by Hall of Famer Juan Marichal. Colon has reached 3,461 2/3 innings. Marichal pitched 3,507 innings in 471 games over 16 years.”

MLB LINKS:

Yahoo Sports: MLB All-Star won't adhere to proposed no spitting rule: 'I'm 100% gonna spit'. Colorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon is going to keep spitting whether Major League Baseball likes it or not.

Minor League Links:

Orlando Sentinel: Tim Tebow Can literally sell dirt in baseball, but NFL sold him a bill of goods.

QC Times.com: No baseball yet, but Bandits plan for other events. “Space to social distance is one thing we have plenty of at the ballpark…It allows the River Bandits to again host non-baseball events such as wedding receptions, group and business meetings and class reunions, and it allows the Quad Cities club to open its field to host other events.”

Baseball Mexico Blog: LIGA MAY OPEN IN AUGUST, MEX PAC SETS OPENER. Cantu said the Liga is now eyeing an August start, four months after the loop's five-month regular had been slated to begin. Baseball writers south of the border have speculated that the LMB would play a 51-game season, but it would be hard to do that and play a full eight-team, three-stage postseason without stretching well into the winter Mexican Pacific League season, which is tentatively set to open on October 12.

Asian Baseball:

Yesterday it was NC Dinos 10 Kiwoom 3.  Aaron Altherr 2 for 3 with walk and an RBI. (Box Score).

Aaron Altherr is back in Center Filed for the NC Dinos today and is so far 0 for 1 (Box Score).

Mack’s Blast From The Past: Mack Ade – Morning Report – 5-28-13. “Keeping my eyes on…AA – Binghamton SP Rafael Montero – Another quality start on 5-26: 6.0-IP, 0-ER, 8-K. His AA ERA is now 3.08 and it’s 3.03 combined with his one AAA outing. Montero now has 10 starts for the season and the only negative I can find is the fact he has only throw 59.1 innings over those games.”

However, the night doesn't end so well for Mo, as Daniel Murphy leads off the bottom of the 9th with a double and David Wright and Lucas Duda follow RBI singles to turn a 1 - 0 deficit into a 2 - 1 win. It is the first time of Mariano's illustrious career that he blows a save without retiring a single batter; it is also his first blown save of the year. (Box Score).

The Dodgers hit five homers in total as they win the game, 9 - 1.

  1. I think the owners' approach (steepening payroll cuts to the costliest players) is sensible, but the proposal the owners offered is far too steep and hence DOA.

It would be absurd for Disney to reopen but fan-less baseball to not happen.

  2. John

You and I discussed this last night on the phone.

I'm araid there won't be any baseball this year and I'm fine with it. I am still excited about the draft, no matter how small it is.... and the free agents signed after the draft ends.

    Past that... who knows, right?

  3. Right Mack, who knows. Maybe they will try Tom's March Madness Tournament with all 30 teams for the heck of it.
