I have tried a number of times to write a post on what the
2020 Draft has turned out to be. You all know how much I love to cover this
aspect of the game.
I just haven’t been able to engage here.
Reducing a draft to five rounds is like removing the turkey
from a Thanksgiving dinner. Still a dinner. Lots of mash potatoes.
The first part is simple. If you are picked in the first five
rounds, you will be eligible for the same level of bonus compensation as in the
past.
Past that, it will be twenty grand a pop for every player
that signs with their team of choice.
I’ll say this… college seniors will fall in love with this.
They would normally have gotten a $10,000 check in a normal year. This
represents a 100% increase.
Add to that there no way possible of lining up the senior
high school class with what they are doing to something that they seem to only
care about teams and college players.
My guess is high school players not picked in the first five
rounds will choose the path of college in hopes of receiving a pot of gold
three years from now.
Whatever happens will be a mess for both the players and the
fans. Only the owners will receive financial relief here.
I have told all of you for years that baseball was a
business. This week’s actions should eliminate any doubt you felt about this
statement.
I think I now know what it would be like if I found out
another man had sex with my wife. The marriage may be salvaged, but it will
never really be the same, will it?
I started this blog because of my love for the minor league teams, not the one in Queens. Making all of these players sit out an entire season is like placing the entire affiliate system in TJS protocal.
What do you do with players that played last year for either the GCL Mets or either DSL teams?
How many rookie teams are we going to have next season?
Yes I think it’s absurd to just make it 5 rounds. The teams that have money will stock pile their systems with all the college players they can after that last round.
ReplyDeleteWe unfortunately don’t have any money and will once again be bottom feeding.
Also how will the rule 5 draft look in December? Who would we keep from entering the draft? We picked a bunch of guys this year, so we keep them all? Who do we add to our 40 man roster, if we don’t have anything to go by?
I think the rule 5 draft may have some teams that have room scoring big time in December, because some teams won’t have the room and the data to know what’s what.

ReplyDeleteThe 5 man draft only helps the owners. They know that players they used to have to pay a $100K+ signing bonus will now sign for $20K. The players still follow their dream, money or no money.
Having no money may benefit us under this new system as well as being to immediately go after anyone after the five rounds. We won't have to wait until 29 other names are called out.
So not only do they save on minor league expenses by not having a season, they save on payroll costs by gutting the signing bonus, too? And remember, they're also eliminating 42 teams in the minor league structure, too. Tell me, where is there a benefit for the players? Anyone? Bueller?

ReplyDeleteThese are not moves to benefit the players. Only spread sheets benefit from this.
The benefit for the players beyond the 5th round is that they can sign with the team of their choice, as long as the feeling is mutual, since money will not be a factor.
ReplyDeleteJust looking at two current Mets pitchers, Brach and Stroman, we see them growing up as Mets fans. If they were not drafted by someone else, and there were no bidding war, there's a good chance they'd have been ours all along.
The $$$ for players drafted beyond Round 5 is insignificant anyway, but being able to choose where to sign can be very meaningful.
Good point Bill. As the top five rounds are usually where most of your MLB players come from, I’d say it’s a Thanksgiving Dinner of turkey only and no sides. Nonetheless, with the signing cap of only $50K this year and the rest of the bonus spot within the next two years,I’m thinking many players will pass.
