As we head towards the 2020 MLB Draft, we are going to detail the last ten years of Mets drafts. Today, we look at 2013.
The Astros drafted Mark Appel #1 but the Cubs made out better
at the #2 overall pick with Kris Bryant. Overall, not the deepest draft that year.
The Mets picked Dominic Smith
in the 1st round, 11th overall. They took Luis
Guillorme in the 10th round, Jeff McNeil
in the 12th round, and Anthony Kay
in the 29th round (but he did not sign and was drafted again in
2016).
Jeff McNeil's emergence as a very valuable "Swiss Army Knife" All-Star, makes this draft with Dominic Smith a winner as that's how highly I think of both of those players. I thought for a long time that Champ Stuart could be a good speedy CF for the Mets but it never happened.
The full Mets list is below.

Dom Smith, Jeff McNeil, Anthony Kay...and a few marginal pieces...all in all, a pretty decent draft.
ReplyDeleteI am extremely puzzled why Dom Smith was allowed to show up for his MLB debut way overweight. He is a first rounder, you need to invest time in him to be ready at the time of call up.
On the bright side, because they didn't show so much negligence to allow a first rounder to not focus on his weight, he got delayed as a successful major leaguer. Had he hit the ground running when he debuted, maybe they would have traded Alonso.
I did not, however, like several low ceiling picks in the first 10 rounds. Without McNeil stunning the world out of the 12th round, this would have been a bad draft.
