NJ.com: MLB rumors: Players leader Tony Clark fires back at owners after 50-game season talk. “’This is all part of the league’s attempts to negotiate through the media instead of focusing on how to bring baseball back to its fans,’ MLBPA executive director Tony Clark said in a prepared statement, according to a report from The Athletic.”

Ken Davidoff NY Post: Three takeaways from latest tensions in MLB-union talks. 1. Major League Baseball deputy commissioner Dan Halem… is not accusing Clark of being unreasonable, or intransigent, or just plain wrong. He is questioning Clark’s competence, his process of disseminating information to his constituents. You don’t see much of that in these sagas. 2. The 30-60-game season very likely won’t happen. 3. It’s Rob Manfred and the owners who can lose the most.

I don’t expect much from him until next year anyway. Just put it on when Harvey pitches and enjoy it. Past that, watch Game of Thrones.”

1969
Tom Seaver strikes out 14 batters in eight innings en route to the Mets' 5-2 win over L.A. at Shea Stadium. The victory, fueled by Ed Kranepool's two home runs, improves the second-place team's record to 24-23, the latest they have been above .500 in franchise history.
1980
The Mets select 18 year-old Darryl Strawberry as the team's number one pick in the June draft. During his stormy eight-year tenure with the team, the 6' 6" outfielder will establish franchise records with 252 homers and 733 RBIs.

1981
Returning as a free agent after a two-year absence from the game, Royals catcher Jerry Grote hits his first home run since 1976. The former Astro and Mets backstop's grand slam helps Kansas City overcome the Mariners, 12-9.
1990
Appearing as a pinch-hitter in the top of the eighth inning, Dave Liddell, playing in his only major league game, singles in his lone plate appearance. The Mets' 23 year-old catcher will stay in the contest, catching the remainder of the team's 6-3 loss at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium.

2012
In a pregame ceremony at Citi Field, John Franco becomes the 26th member of the Mets Hall of Fame. The former southpaw reliever, who also played for Cincinnati and Houston, leads all lefties in all-time saves with 424, which includes 276 for the Mets, a franchise record.

2006 - In a long day at Shea Stadiumrookie catcher Eliezer Alfonzo hits a two-run home run for his first major league hit, helping the San Francisco Giants to a 6 - 4 victory over the New York Mets in the first game of a doubleheader, which ends after 3 hours, 12 minutes. In the second game, already delayed 2 1/2 hours by rain, the Mets win 3 - 2, in the bottom of the 11th inning, when Lastings Milledge scores the winning run on a short sacrifice fly by Chris Woodward. The twin bill ends close to 11 p.m. ET.

2012: The Mets complete a three-game sweep of the Cardinals with a 6 - 1 win to reach a virtual tie for first place in the NL EastJon Niese strikes out a career-high 10 batters in 6 innings before leaving because of an accelerated heart beat. Kirk Nieuwenhuis hits a homer and drives in 3 runs. The Cards lost the first two games of the series by shutout, including Johan Santana's no-hitter on June 1st, and finally end their 26-inning scoring drought in the 8th, on an RBI single by Adron Chambers.

2016: The Marlins get some unwanted publicity when they are the first to publicly announce the death of boxing great Muhammad Ali on the Marlins Park scoreboard at the end of tonight's game against the Mets. Team President David Samson had heard the news from a person close to Ali, but had not realized the family had not made the news public when he calls on the scoreboard operators to pay tribute.

  1. I agree with the D Backs owner, finish the games by the end of October, using larger rosters and more doubleheaders. You can use day-night twin non-admission. Under no circumstances can fans get as close together as rioters do.

Murphy's call was priceless - as was Murph himself. Always was my favorite announcer.

I think Pete should not stray too much into political statements - it can be a slippery slope - but I appreciate his heart and passion.

  2. Tom,

Hopefully they will come to an agreement. The money should be the least of their concerns. Safety, logistics, and the future of the sport should be the main concern.
