Good morning.
Day One is over and we snagged a good one in Harvard-Westlake
outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.
We now move on the rounds 2-5 where we will have five picks
tonight and there are plenty of good to great names left out there to consider.
Some are:
RHP:
Jared Kelley – Refugio HS (TX) – I am still shaking my head why
this kid is still on the board. Everyone had him projected as a top 10 pick
with some as high as #6. There must be a signability problem here.
PG - Kelley is a 2020 RHP with a 6-2 200 lb. frame from Refugio,
TX who attends Refugio. Strong and firm physical build, workhouse starting
pitcher build. Has a balanced delivery with a long arm stroke in back, lands a
bit closed out front and can clear his hips more consistently, very low effort
release especially considering his velocity. Fastball sat very consistently in
the 95-97 mph range for two innings and touched 98, mostly straight with
occasional arm side run. Showed mature confidence in his change up and flashed
plus with the pitch. Slurve type breaking ball shows feel and tightness and
landed them well while showing the ability to mix and sequence his pitches.
Chris McMahon – McMahon was a late mock riser this off season. And then
the 2020 season started and, in four starts, he went 3-0, 1.05, with 38
strikeouts in 25.2 innings pitched. This was a far better stat line than his
teammate that had already come off the board, Slade
Cecconi.
Cole Wilcox – Georgia – Wilcox stared four games this year for the
powerhouse Bulldogs and posted a stat line of 3-0, 1.57, 0.87, 23-IP, 32-K.
Wilcox told handlers this morning that he was return to Georgia in 2021.
JT Ginn – Mississippi State – Ginn went out for the season after only one start with ‘arm soreness’. It resulted in TJS and calls into play whether he will be picked at all this draft. Shame. He was a pre-season Top 10 pick. 2020 stat line: 1-start, 6.00, 3-IP, 4-K
CJ Van Eyk – Florida State – Van Eyk also pitches for a powerful
team and put up powerful numbers for FSU before the sreason shut down. His four
start stat line was 1-1, 1.31, 1.14, 20.2-IP
Jared Jones – La Maranda HS (CA) – I’m a big fan of Jones and my
hope is he will not be off the beard until our turn with our third pick in the
draft.
PG - Jones is a 2020 RHP/OF with a 6-2 175 lb. frame from
Whittier, CA who attends La Mirada. Lean athletic build with lots of room to
get stronger. High level two-way prospect whose future is on the mound. Good
rhythm and tempo to his delivery, not much effort in generating velocity, gets
tall over the rubber with a high leg lift and works downhill from there,
extremely fast arm from a 3/4's arm slot. Fastball topped out at 96 mph, has
thrown harder in the past and has a history of maintaining his elite velocity
through whole games, gets riding life up in the zone and sink down in the zone.
Has feel for his breaking ball and will add and subtract from the pitch, best
breaking balls are the harder sliders he throws with conviction and full arm
speed. Has a feel for firm change up that mimics his fastball well, change up
topped out at 90 mph. 6.75 runner, has elite arm strength from the outfield
with on line accuracy, just fun to watch throw the ball during drills, doesn't
sell out for 100 mph. Right handed hitter, gets to his front side early, has
quick hands from a deep hand load, pretty simple swing approach, swings hard
with some late lower half use, power projects.
LHP:
Dax Fulton – Mustang HS (OK) –
PG - Fulton is a 2020 LHP/1B with a 6-6 220 lb. frame from
Oklahoma City, OK who attends Mustang. Long and lean athletic build, extremely
projectable physically. High 3/4's arm slot with a short stride out front, gets
very downhill to the plate, uses his lower half well with good hip rotation and
on line release, has a couple of moving parts to provide deception, hides the
ball effectively. Steady low 90's fastball, topped out 93, gets some nice
running life with severe downhill angle. Slider is tunneled very well off his
fastball with tight biting action, has confidence in his slider and will throw
it at any time and double/triple up with it. Nice change up for a young power
pitcher. Filled up the strike zone with three quality pitches and all of them
are projectable to get better with physical maturity. Very high ceiling talent.
Showed his athleticism at the plate, left handed hitter with good bat speed and
a feel for the barrel, mid field to pull contact, has loose hands and gets to
his front side well, 7.09 runner.
Burl Carraway – Expects are projecting that the Dallas-Baptist
pitcher could literally pitch this year in the pros in a relief role. He had
eight appearances in 2020, posting a 0.96-ERA, 1.21-WHIP, with 17 strikeouts in
9.1-IP.
C:
Dillon Dingler – Dingler pitched for Ohio State and
his 2019 stat line was 13-G, 50-AB, .340/.404/.760, 5-HR
OF:
Daniel Cabrera – LSU – Carera wasn’t ranked in the
top five outfielder category, but he is still a good one and should go early tonight.
2020 stat line: 17-G, 58-AB, .345/.466/.500, 2-HR
Dax Fulton is very interesting and may be available late since he's not a power thrower. However, at that size he may develop some more velocity as he matures past high school age. Lefties with effortless motion are a good thing.
ReplyDeleteNice to know there is still excellent quality left. We need another A draft this year. It is a good thing Cecconi is off the board, as he makes me immediately think of Cecchini.
