John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 7/29/2020

Good Morning.  Mets 8 Red Sox 3 behind a David Peterson’s MLB debut and J.D. Davis HR, Mets give Catcher Bruce Maxwell — MLB’s first kneeler — another baseball chance, and Tyler Bashlor is DFA’d.

Mets Links:

Mets 8 Red Sox 3. David Peterson (W,1) 5.2 innings, 2 runs, 7 hits, 2 BB, 3K, 78 pitches – 46 strikes; Drew Smith 1/3 inning, 1K; Justin Wilson, 1 inning, no runs, no hits, 1 K; Dellin Betances 1 inning, 1 hit no runs; Hunter Strickland 1 hit, 1 run, 1 K.  Robinson Cano. 2 for 3, run scored, 1 RBI, 1 walk; J.D. Davis, 2 for 3, 2 RBIs, 2 run HR, 1 run scored; Amed Rosario, 1 for 5 2 RBIs; Jeff McNeil 2 for 5 , 2 RBIs, 1 run scored; Brandon Nimmo 1 for 3 with an RBI and run scored.

Brian Joura Mets360.com: “Peterson came out throwing 94 but soon settled into 91-92 range. His first pitch of the game missed badly and his second pitch was hammered off the monster in left field. But J.D. Davis, who had quite an eventful night, threw out the runner at second base, which allowed Peterson a chance to find a groove.”

Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Mets’ David Peterson’s MLB debut one to remember. “The kid found himself in trouble a couple of times, including bases loaded and none out in the third. Then he struck out [J.D.] Martinez, induced a double play from Rafael Devers, and that was really that. ‘I’ve got to go after him,’ Peterson said. ‘I knew I needed a strikeout. And I made my pitches.’..’The kid,’ [Manager Luis] Rojas said, ‘wasn’t shying away.’”

Metstradamus: “A f***ing 3-2 slider. To J.D. Martinez. With the bases loaded and nobody out… it’s one thing to throw the pitch, it’s another to execute it. Peterson did both and it was a sight to behold. Does it mean he’s headed for stardom? Can’t tell you that. But what it means is that he is the Mets’ fifth starter until further notice.”

SNY.TV: Everything you need to know about Mets prospect David Peterson, including what scouts have said. “Baseball America: Peterson is a strike-thrower who generates late swings and mis-hits thanks to the extension in his delivery that makes his 87-92 mph fastball look faster. His swing-and-miss slider has been his primary weapon dating back to college.”

Andy Martino SNY.TV: Mets should stick with slumping Yoenis Cespedes at DH a while longer.”Yoenis Cespedes has seven strikeouts in 14 at-bats in 2020…That’s not to say he’s a lost cause. That’s actually our point here. The Mets have to keep playing him in order to find out. If Cespedes’ timing clicks, he can transform an offense. It won’t click if he’s on the bench.”

New York Mets traded Jacke Davis to the St. Louis Cardinals for Duke Carmel on July 29, 1963.

New York Mets traded Jeff Kent and Jose Vizcaino to the Cleveland Indians for Carlos Baerga and Alvaro Espinoza on July 29, 1996.

New York Mets traded Rey Sanchez to the Seattle Mariners for Kenny Kelly on July 29, 2003.

New York Mets traded Jason Vargas to the Philadelphia Phillies for Austin Bossart on July 29, 2019.

1944
Annabelle Lee, the aunt of future major leaguer Bill Lee, pitches the first of five perfect games in the 12-year history of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The Minneapolis Millerettes southpaw knuckleballer, who will toss a no-hitter for the Fort Wayne Daisies precisely one year from this date, doesn't allow any batters to reach first base in the 18-0 rout of the Kenosha (WI) Comets.
1996
The Mets deal Jeff Kent along with Jose Vizcaino to the Indians for Carlos Baerga and Alvaro Espinoza. The trade, considered to be one of the worst in franchise history, will be a bust for New York when Baerga hits only .267 in three non-productive seasons in the Big Apple, and Kent goes on to win an MVP award and posts Hall of Fame numbers for a second baseman during his 17-year tenure in the major leagues.

2000
Recently acquired Mets make good first impressions as Mike Bordick goes 2-for-3, including a homer on the first pitch he sees as a Met, and Rick White pitches a scoreless inning to get the win; the other newcomer, Bubba Trammell, will homer in his first at-bat in his Met debut tomorrow.
2004
In a 10-1 victory over the Expos, Eric Valent becomes the eighth player in franchise history to hit for the cycle. After singling in the second, doubling in the third, and homering in the fifth, the Mets' utility player triples in the seventh to join Phillies David Bell, Pirates Daryle Ward, and Chad Moeller of the Brewers to accomplish the feat this season.

2006
Julio Franco became the oldest player ever to pinch run when he takes Carlos Delgado's place on the basepaths after the Mets' infielder is hit by a pitch in the fourth inning. The 47 year-old pinch-runner, who will stay in the game to play first, steals second base and will advance to third on the catcher's error in the Mets' 11-4 win over Atlanta at Turner Field.
2008
In a 4-1 win over the Marlins at Dolphin Stadium, Mets third baseman David Wright scores in his 13th consecutive game, establishing a new franchise record. Teammate Carlos Beltran had set the previous team mark in 2006.

2001 - A career utility player who's making the most of his opportunity to play this year in place of the injured Edgardo Alfonzo, second baseman Desi Relaford makes several key contributions to a dramatic, back-and-forth, 6 - 5 nailbiter between the Mets and Phillies. After Relaford's tremendous over-the-shoulder inning-ending grab robs Philly of two runs in the 6th, he goes to even greater lengths to break the tie he's just preserved: after his one-out, 7th-inning, hit-and-run single moves Lenny Harris to third and brings up Mike Piazza, New York's number one run producer produces a tailor-made 4-6-3, inning-ending double play grounder. Long before Relaford can reach second, shortstop Jimmy Rollins receives the throw and crosses the bag, continuing on another 10 to 12 feet past the bag and at least 7 feet clear of the baseline before turning and making the transfer from glove to hand. As the unsuspecting shortstop winds up to throw, Relaford, his left arm dragging the baseline to which his fully-extended body is perfectly perpendicular, suddenly enters the picture, sliding/tumbling past on his way to second base. Just as Rollins is about to unload, Desi fully extends his right toe, hooks Rollins' right shin and completely turns him around. When he comes to rest, the Phillies' shortstop is facing the now unoccupied third base as its previous tenant, Lenny Harris, crosses home plate. The resulting 3 - 2 Mets lead will last exactly two batters into the next half-inning as John Franco coughs it up on Scott Rolen's no-out, two-run homer. Tsuyoshi Shinjo hits a towering, two-run homer in the 8th, but New York's Armando Benitez blows the save and Relaford must come to the rescue yet again, turning a double play to get Benitez out of further trouble, thus setting the stage for redemption in the form of Mike Piazza's walk-off home run.

2015: Another trade almost gets consumed, as the Mets are on the verge of trading IF Wilmer Flores and P Zack Wheeler to Milwaukee for OF Carlos Gomez. The rumor of the deal sweeps through the stands at Citi Field, and Flores breaks into tears on the field as he does not want to leave a team that has grown into a contender. The trade falls through, however, and the Mets lose, 7 - 3, to San Diego in spite of three homers by Lucas Duda.

2019: One day after their surprise acquisition of Marcus Stroman, the Mets deal with their surplus of starting pitchers by sending Jason Vargas to the Phillies in return for AA catcher Austin Bossart, who is hitting .195.

  1. John, I am surprised you didn't have the video clip of JD Davis diving back into first and letting out this huge groan right near the mic. It was hilarious and had the boy in the booth in stitches.

Kudos to Peterson. Keep it up.

Cespedes and Pete need to awaken their bats. Cano's seemed to revive nicely last night.

I wonder if Cespedes at this age can hit as well as Dom Smith.

The other Smith, Drew, got a big, big strikeout to end the 6th. Kudos to him too.

3-2 now, and I am back off the ledge.

  3. John -

You can't ask for from a rookie starter on his first outing.

This could be quite the shot in the arm for the Mets rotation if Peterson proves out to be real.

  4. As I've said before, my biggest worry going into OD was the depth of the rotation, worsened when Stroman went on the IL.

Peterson did a lot to relieve my concern yesterday (yes, I know it's "only one game"), and raised a new question: If he pitches like this in 2 or 3 more starts, what happens when Marcus teturns?

Focus must be on Wacha/Porcello to see which of them remains in the rotation.

  5. A little birdie told me the Stroman injury is less significant than what was portrayed. He could be back very quickly. I assume Mets won't push out Porcello for 10 million reasons so this should be interesting.

  6. The main difference between Peterson last night and Matz' debut is that David didn't get 3 hits and drive in 4 Runs. 😉

Otherwise, very similar, including starting off with a wild pitch.

    1. But David also didn't have a very enthusiastic grandpa in the stands cheering him on.

  7. Ernest -

Porcello could fill a much needed 6th-7th inning role as well as long man, regardless of monies owed.

  8. I wouldn't call the 6th - 7th role "much needed" if it is needed at all. We have Betances, Lugo, Familia, Wilson, and Diaz, and Shreve and Smith look good. With Gsellman, Hughes and Brach due back, where's the hole?
