John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 7/9/2020

Good Morning. Happy Birthday George Stone.  The Mets lose Jacob Rhame to the Angels on waivers and replace him with Ryley Gilliam on the 60 man pool, and interested Mets buyers must submit their bids today.

Mets Links:

NY Post: Mets reliever Brad Brach among those not yet at spring 2.0. “The veteran reliever has not worked out with the team since spring training 2.0 began on Friday, according to manager Luis Rojas, who said he would provide no further details. A day earlier, Rojas confirmed reliever Jared Hughes, who was signed last week, has not appeared in camp.”

NY Post: The Mets played their first intrasquad scrimmage, which lasted 2 ½ innings. Dellin Betances, Paul Sewald, Justin Wilson, Tyler Bashlor and Jeurys Familia all saw action from the mound.

90 Percent Mets: Goodbye Jacob Rhame. “The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have claimed Jacob Rhame off waivers. The Mets replaced Rhame by adding Ryley Gilliam to their player pool. Now, Gilliam is an interesting arm, posting 14 K’s per 9 in the minors.”

SNY.tv: With a Mets sale drawing closer, Brodie Van Wagenen had his best month as GM. I thought he would talk about the recent draft successes but instead Andy Martino notes: “When spring training shut down in March, he told players to think of their health first, and the team second -- an ethical message and one not offered by all employers.  Now that the team has reassembled, Van Wagenen is stressing adherence to protocols. Even more importantly, he is modeling them.”

SNY.tv: Mets will have cardboard cutouts of fans in Citi Field seats during 2020 home games. “According to the Mets’ website, season-ticket holders who renew their 2021 packages can have cardboard cutouts of themselves in the stands during home games. Other fans will likely be able to pay to have their cutouts there as well.”

SNY.tv: Steven Matz explains how Nashville workouts gave him confidence heading into Mets camp. “While many MLB players were working out on their own in self-isolation, Steven Matz was part of a cohort of major leaguers down in Nashville. Having that camaraderie and competition around him throughout the quarantined months, Matz has entered summer camp extremely confident.”

NY Post: How Steven Matz’s ‘vow’ kept him ready for crucial Mets role.  “I felt like we would be back together at some point, so me and [Brad Brach] kind of made a vow to each other, like we’re going to be available to each other because we’re in the same area and [White Sox catcher] James McCann was awesome.”

Ken Davidoff NY Post: Amed Rosario has so much to prove at his Mets crossroad. What is his game? Is it the .319/.351/.453 slash line that he compiled in 70 contests — with improved defense, to boot — after the All-Star break last year, giving him a final slash line of .287/.323/.432 in 157 games? Because that’s pretty darn good all around.

Newsday: Amed Rosario's earlier absence from Mets' summer camp still a mystery.  “That was just a team decision,” the shortstop said through an interpreter. “They told me to report on Sunday.” Didn’t he ask why? “To be honest, no, I didn’t ask,” Rosario said. “I just do what I’m told to do, and I don’t think they’d tell me to do it for any bad reason.”

Last Word on Baseball: New York Mets Ugly Eleven Losses # 8. Darryl Strawberry Breaks His Thumb in 1985. May 11th 1985 vs the Philadelphia Phillies.

Amazing Avenue: Jared Hughes could be a huge upgrade for the Mets’ bullpen. “Over his nine-season career, Hughes has a 2.88 ERA, 1.220 WHIP, averages 6.07 K/9 and 0.76 HR/9.”

MLB.com: Now batting vs. Satchel Paige ... Phil Jackson?? “It happened, the 74-year-old Jackson says, in the summer of either 1963 or ’64, when he was playing American Legion ball in his hometown of Williston, N.D., and Paige was barnstorming the country with some Negro Leagues pals…’He was probably throwing 70 miles per hour,’ Jackson says. ‘I think he gave me a pitch to hit [on purpose], and I hit it off the center-field wall. It was a fun game.’”

1964
Frank Thomas, pinch-hitting for Roy McMillan, strokes a two-out, two-run homer off Curt Simmons, giving the Mets a 4–3 victory over the Cardinals at Shea Stadium. The round-tripper comes in the outfielder’s first at-bat in five weeks, due to being sidelined by a glandular infection.
1969
Tom Seaver's near-perfect game, immortalized as "The Imperfect Game," is broken up when Cubs' rookie outfielder Jim Qualls, a lifetime .223 hitter who will finish his career with only 31 hits, singles into center field. The 24 year-old right-hander, who tosses a five one-hitters for the Mets, will finally get his no-no in 1978 against St. Louis pitching for the Reds.

1972
Striking out three Red Sox batters in the second inning en route to a 16 K complete game performance against Boston, Nolan Ryan becomes the third pitcher in baseball history to have struck out the side on nine pitches twice during his career. The Angels fireballer, who first did it with the Mets in 1968, joins Lefty Grove (twice in 1938) and Sandy Koufax (1962 and 1964) as the other hurlers who have accomplished the feat.
1973
Interrupting Board Chairman M. Donald Grant's pep talk during a team meeting, Mets reliever Tug McGraw shouts out the words, "Ya Gotta Believe," which will become the rallying cry for the club, climbing out of the cellar en route to the NL pennant. Although New York beats Houston, 2-1, in 12 innings, their closer's words of encouragement will not immediately light a fire under the team, as they will continue to struggle until the middle of August.

1970: On the first anniversary of his near-perfect game, Tom Seaver hits his first major league home run off Rich Nye of the Expos. Seaver goes on to pitch a complete game three-hitter for a 7 - 1 Mets win at Shea Stadium.

1988: Nolan Ryan wins his 100th game as an Astro, 6 - 3 over the Mets, and becomes the 7th pitcher in major league history to win 100 for two different clubs. Ryan won 138 games for the California Angels in the 1970s.

1998: Benny AgbayaniNorfolk Tides outfielder about to be called up to the Mets, is married at home plate to his fiancee Neila before the Triple-A All-Star Game between the International and Pacific Coast Leagues. Agbayani, from Hawaii, and his bride wear Hawaiian shirts and have a receiving line of bat-toting ballplayers. The IL whips the PCL, 8 - 4.

2000: The Yankees lose to Mike Hampton and the Mets, 2 - 0. Armando Benitez closes for the Mets, while Andy Pettitte is the loser. The Yanks also lose Shane Spencer, who blows out his knee and ends his season. The game at Shea Stadium draws 54,283, the largest regular season crowd for the Mets since 1970.
