NY Post: Mets fall to Nationals as Steven Matz struggles. The ouch factor is real for the Mets on multiple fronts. There is the obvious: Robinson Cano was placed on the injured list Tuesday with a grade two left abductor strain, and two other starters, Jeff McNeil and Amed Rosario, were sidelined (even unavailable to pinch hit) and listed as day to day after receiving MRI exams for ailments. Then there is the “ouch” of watching any pitcher other than Jacob deGrom or perhaps rookie David Peterson start a game for the Mets.

Metstradamus - Adductor In Plain Sight: “Steven Matz didn’t have it. Threw an off speed pitch that had no bite to Howie Kendrick which he smacked for a home run to make it 1-0 Nationals, then threw a ball that Nido targeted for the inside corner but it bled over the middle to Josh Harrison in the second which he hit to Alexandria for a 2-0 Nats lead.”

Brian Joura Mets360.com: “Steven Matz surrendered two homers and five runs in three innings to put the Mets in an early hole. But the bullpen came up with five scoreless innings, including an inning apiece by Dellin Betances and Edwin Diaz, to give the bats a chance.”

Mike Vaccaro NY Post Mets are spiraling, so there are no moral victories: “But as a wise man once said about another pro sport in town: There are no medals for trying. And the fact that 5-0 Nats, ended up 5-3 Nats, instead of 11-2 Nats is of some small, hollow consolation right now, truth be told. The season isn’t even two weeks old and it already feels exhausted. That wasn’t how this was supposed to go at all.”

Mets.com: Missed opportunities sting Mets in close loss.  “they [the Mets] carried three catchers so that they could pinch-hit or pinch-run for a backstop at opportune moments...But when that exact situation unfolded in the sixth, Rojas stuck with Tomas Nido -- a career .191 hitter -- rather than turn to pinch-hitter Dominic Smith. Rojas indicated he was hesitant to hand the game-calling responsibilities midgame to rookie catcher Ali Sanchez, in what would have been his big league debut.”

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: “The Mets on Tuesday placed Robinson Canó on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 2 left adductor strain, recalling outfielder Billy Hamilton to take his place. The move comes as Canó was amid a 13-for-22 stretch at the plate, raising his batting average to a team-best .412.”

16. Robert Dominguez RHP; 17. Shervyen Newton SS; 18. Alexander Ramirez OF; 19. Endy Rodriguez C/OF;  20. Freddy Valdez OF; 21. Dedniel Nunez RHP; 22. Joshua Cornielly RHP; 23. Jaylen Palmer 3B/SS; 24. Carlos Cortes; 25. Michel Otanez RHP; 26. Jordany Ventura RHP; 27. Walker Lockett RHP; 28. Ali Sanchez; 29. Ryley Gilliam; 30. Jose Butto RHP.

Mike’s Mets: Breaking Out My Crystal Ball. “[Monday] was a very welcome ray of light in what has otherwise been a dark few days for the Mets. It wasn't just that the Mets won, either. It was they won a game where they actually scored runs for Jacob deGrom. They played pretty solid defense. Team management managed to keep themselves out of the headlines, and no players opted out on the season yesterday. For the 2020 New York Mets, it was a very good day.”
