Tom Brennan: WHY DOES THIS METS TEAM UNDERWHELM?

The Yanks just crush teams - they overwhelm them.

The Mets - just - so - often - underwhelm.

I mean, how on earth can Jake deGrom be 21-17 over his last 66 games with a 2.00 ERA, unless the team underwhelms?

How did the Mets get off to an excellent start last year, and then completely underwhelm for the next 100 games?

How could the Mets win their opener, and then underwhelm at 2-7 over their next 9?

How could the Mets get shut out yesterday, despite 10 hits and 5 walks, both underwhelming and painful?

How could the Mets be hitting an underwhelming .200 with RISP?

How can the Mets lose a Thor and his Porcellian replacement be so underwhelming?

How could Cespedes underwhelm to the point he couldn't even call to say good bye?

How could Pounding Pete so totally overwhelm last year and so totally underwhelm in the first 10 games this year?

How could Diaz so underwhelm that he lost his closer's job in less than ten games?

How could I try to come up with answers and my brain underwhelmed?

Let me leave you with two things:

If all 30 teams made the playoffs, would the Mets make it?

And the schedule does show the Mets have 10 games with the Marlins this month - a chance for them to overwhelm, I suppose.

  1. We had the spelling wrong - it is Suckspedes

  2. I guess that the fact that Cespedes is foregoing the rest of his contract payments too makes Jeffy VERY happy.

  3. When you strike out a lot - don't take the extra base - have limited team speed - don't manufacture runs - you can lots of hits - lots of walks - and score few runs. We have seen this with Mets teams in the past. What do they say about doing the same thing and getting different results?

  4. John, I hate losing prospects, but Billy Hamilton could really help with his D and his speed. We can hope.

We have to get Pete hitting like Judge. Right now Pete is hitting like Pete....Schourek. .164 career lifetime. Alonso is at .175.

  5. I just think the Mets were not as good as they seemed down the stretch last year, nor are they as bad as they have been over the past 8 days. They are a slightly better than .500 team.

And the Marlins could field a team of dachshunds and bassett hounds and the Mets would manage to lose to them.

  6. Watching Rojas manage the 1st games makes me wish for the good days with Callaway. How do you not walk Freeman with 2 outs and a runner on 2nd. Also, Nido up 1st and 3rd one out, Rosario not sent in motion. Result inning ending DP.

  7. Rds 900. Think not hitting for Nido was a result of not having 3 catchers. That's why they added Sanchez today. Of course, there are times when they should've hit for Gimenez but didn't while Guillorme could have come in for defense later.

  8. I did not suggest hitting for Nido. Count was 2-1. Why was Rosario not running.

  9. We focus on the problems when losing is frequent, that’s for sure. But this team needs to hustle.
