Blue Jays 7 Mets 3 David Peterson (L, 4-2) 5 innings, 3 hits (1 HR), 2 runs, 2 ER, 2 walks, 3 Ks, 81 pitches – 52 strikes; Brad Brach 0 innings, 3 runs, 3 ER, 0 hits, 3 walks; Jared Hughes 1 inning, 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 ER, 1 walks, 2 Ks; Erasmo Ramírez 2 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 Ks; Michael Conforto 2 for 5, 1 run scored,– now hitting .343; Dominic Smith 2 for 4, 2 RBIs; Amed Rosario 1 for 3; Todd Frazier 2 for 4, 1 RBI; Jeff McNeil 1 for 2, run scored; J.D. Davis, 1 for 4, 1 run scored, 1 walk; Pete Alonso 1 for 4; Brandon Nimmo 2 for 4, 2 runs scored (Box Score).

Brian Joura Mets360.com: “Jeff McNeil left the game with stomach issues and the rest of us got them once the relievers came into the game, as the Blue Jays took the rubber game of the series with a 7-3 win.”

Metstradamus: “One day after Luis Rojas kept Seth Lugo in for the sixth inning after he labored through a tough 25 pitch fifth inning, Rojas reversed course and pulled David Peterson who was at 81 pitches, one less than Lugo was, but had just thrown a nine pitch fifth inning. So, we keep pitchers in who are limping along but pull pitchers who are finding themselves.”

Mike Puma NY Post: “His [Peterson’s] pitch limit was 90 pitches and third time through the middle of the order, we felt real good about Brach coming in who matches up real good against lefties,” [Mets Manager Luis] Rojas said.

Deehsa Thosar NY Daily News: “Brach walked three consecutive Blue Jays to load the bases for Jared Hughes, who walked in a run on the fourth batter of the sixth inning. The wheels spun off when Hughes gave up a bases-clearing three-run double to Santiago Espinal and another RBI single to Danny Jansen. Toronto’s five-run rally sealed the Mets' fate as they dropped to five games under .500 with just 13 games remaining.”

Newsday: Before that mess, Peterson was solid, allowing two runs and three hits in five frames…in the second inning…Lourdes Gurriel Jr. walloped a no-doubt two-run homer…Peterson settled in to retire 12 of his next (and final) 15 batters. Had Peterson remained in, the Mets might have been able to avoid the Brach/Hughes disaster.”

NY Post: Base-running blunders continue to haunt Mets. “On Sunday, the gaffe came early, but was also pivotal in a second straight defeat, when Todd Frazier got tagged out in a rundown between third and home in the top of the first inning of a 7-3 defeat at Sahlen Field in Buffalo.”

Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Desperation is last hope for maddening Mets. The Mets “have yet to win more than three games in a row. Given the talent on the team, that seems almost impossible. Given what we’ve seen every day, it is anything but.”

Mets.com: Mets 'still right there' but running out of time. The 5 things that must happen for club to reach postseason. 1. deGrom must win the NL Cy Young (or at least come close); 2. Somebody besides deGrom and Lugo must step up; 3. Alonso must get hot and stay hot; 4. Díaz must not blow another save; 5. The Mets must win every remaining series.

NY Post: Mets’ Jake Marisnick hopeful he can avoid trip to injured list. “The veteran outfielder on Sunday indicated his right hamstring was feeling better, a day after he departed the game with tightness in the muscle. Marisnick was on the IL last month because of a strain in the other hamstring.”

Amazing Avenue: State of the System 2020: Starting Pitching. “The Mets minor league starting pitching depth has been depleted at the upper levels of the system, but there are several exciting prospects at the lower levels of the system.”

AM NY: Steve Cohen, Mets to sign agreement for majority ownership Monday, still needs MLB owner approval in November. “A source originally informed amNewYork Metro last week that negotiations between Cohen — valued at $14.6 billion — and the Mets were successful.”

Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, with his eighth-inning thievery in a 7-4 loss to the Braves at Shea Stadium, becomes the first player to have four straight seasons of 50 or more stolen bases playing for a New York area team, which also includes Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants. The accomplishment extends the infielder's own record, as he is also the only Gotham major leaguer to achieve the feat for three consecutive years.

  1. Harry Parker: 262 innings as a Met and I don't remember him.

I'll forget a lot of the current Mets too, eventually.

  2. Funny, it was the 16th no hitter in Cubs' history. Some marginal guy. Mets have had all these great pitchers over 60 years and have one ump-aided no-no. Well, I remember they did have one in spring training once.

    Incredible.

  5. Yesterday was an important Mets anniversary...for me. It was 49 years ago yesterday (9/13/71) that I went to my first Mets game at Shea Stadium. The Mets won that game (4-2 over the Expos), but it turned out to be a disaster of an evening.

It was actually supposed to be a twi-night doubleheader. I was going with my aunt, but she was running late. It was raining lightly when we finally got to the stadium in the second or third inning. My father had dropped us off at Shea. The game was already 3-1 Mets at that point, with Sadecki pitching for the Mets.

We settled in, and the light rain got heavier. The game was stopped (and eventually called) after five innings, so we go to see about 1/2 hour of baseball that night. My aunt called my father, who had just gotten home from dropping us off, and asked him to come back and pick us up. On the way back with my mother in the car, they were rear-ended on the Cross Island Parkway entrance, with the car being pretty much totaled. My uncle eventually picked us up, long after just about everyone else had left.

Maybe that should have been a warning to me as to what I'd get for being a Mets fan.

  6. Wow Bob. That was an omen for sure. Glad you stuck with the Mets all these years. Hope no one was hurt. Cars were a lot tougher back then.
