John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 9/16/2020

Good Morning. Happy Birthday to Orel Hershiser and Desi Relaford.  Phillies 4 Mets 1.  MLB announces a playoff bubble and more on Steve Cohen.

Mets Links:

Phillies 4 Mets 1 Rick Porcello 6 innings, 4 hits (1 HR), 4 runs, 4 ER, 2 walks, 5K, 94 pitches – 66 strikes;  Justin Wilson, 1 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks; Edwin Diaz 1 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 3 ks; Brandon Nimmo 2 for 5 (HR #7), 1 run scored, 1 RBI; Michael Conforto 1 for 4, 1 walk,  – now hitting .341; J.D. Davis 2 for 5; Dominic Smith 1 for 4; Robinson Cano 1 for 3; Pete Alonso 0 for 4; Jeff McNeil 3 for 4; Andres Gimenez 1 for 3; Wilson Ramos 0 for 3; (Box Score).

SNY.TV: “The Mets and Phillies continue their three-game on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Jacob deGrom will start for the Mets, while Zack Wheeler goes for the Phillies.

Brian Joura Mets360: “In a matchup of former Cy Young Award winners with lousy current ERAs, Jake Arrieta did a better imitation of a top pitcher, leading the Phillies to a 4-1 win Tuesday night in Philadelphia, sending the Mets to their third straight loss. In two games against the Mets this season, Arrieta is 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA. Against every other team he’s faced, Arrieta is 2-4 with a 6.19 ERA.”

Newsday: Porcello lowered his ERA from 6.07 to 6.06. He cruised for nearly four full innings — an uncommon feat for him this year — before it fell apart against a lineup missing two of its best hitters, J.T. Realmuto and Rhys Hoskins.

SNY.TV: “Pete Alonso had a chance to give the Mets an early lead in the third inning. Following two base hits and a Robinson Cano walk, Alonso came up against Jake Arrieta with the bases loaded and two away, but he flew out harmless to center field to end the inning. Alonso went 0-for-4 and left five runners on base, seeing his average dip to .216.”

Metstradamus: “Wilson Ramos hit into a double play with the bases loaded and one out in the 6th), and Jeff McNeil won tonight’s “Daniel Murphy Award” for dopey play on the basepaths as he tried to go to third with two outs and a grounder to the left side and kept a run from scoring to at least bring the Mets a little closer in the 8th.”

Mike Puma NY Post: “On a night the Mets left 12 runners on base, no failure was as pronounced as Ramos’ inning-ending double=play grounder in the sixth after the Mets had loaded the bases. Overall, the Mets lineup was quiet for a third straight game since scoring 18 runs on Friday against the Blue Jays.”

SNY.TV: Mets leave 12 runners on base as offense sputters in pivotal Phillies loss.  “’Particularly after that game [Mets 18-1 win on Friday], I've seen a couple of poor at-bats in that situation. Just non-quality at-bats, not maintaining our approach that we still have when there’s nobody on or no one in scoring position,’ said manager Luis Rojas.”

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: Mets lose to Phillies, further hurting chances of making NL playoffs.

Mike Puma NY Post: How Steve Cohen will impact Van Wagenen, Mets front-office. “The source indicated there is a sense of optimism among Van Wagenen’s staff that Cohen will give this front office at least into next season before considering changes.”

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets’ Jacob deGrom can’t afford misstep in tight Cy Young race.

Newsday: MLB could approve Mets' sale to Steve Cohen sooner than November meetings.” An in-person meeting is not required to approve the sale of a club, however. MLB can call for a special meeting in effect whenever it needs. This year, with all the pandemic-related changes and fluidity to the season, conference calls have happened frequently.”

1975
Mike Vail fails to break the major league rookie record for consecutive games with a hit shared by Richie Ashburn (1948, Phillies) and Alvin Dark (1948, Braves). The 23 year-old freshman left fielder has plenty of opportunities to hit safely in his 24th straight game, coming to the plate eight times in the Mets' 18-inning marathon with Montreal, a 4-3 victory over the Expos at Shea Stadium.
2007
David Wright, homering in the seventh inning of a 10-6 loss to Philadelphia at Shea Stadium, becomes the 30th member of the 30-30 club. Returning to the dugout, the Mets third baseman is greeted by hitting coach Howard Johnson, who along with Darryl Strawberry are the other Metropolitans to have also stolen thirty bases and hit 30 homers in the same season.

1966 - The Mets (5) and Giants (3) tie a major-league record by using eight pinch hitters in the 9th inning as the Mets win, 5 - 4. Willie McCovey hits a 500-foot home run, judged the longest ever at Candlestick Park.

1971: At New York, lefty Juan Pizarro shuts out the Mets and Tom Seaver, 1 - 0. Pizarro does it all, clubbing a solo homer to win his own game. It's Pizarro's second shutout in a row and Seaver's first loss after seven straight wins. Tom's last loss was August 1st, also to Pizarro.

1996: In their 5 - 2 loss to the BravesMets OF Lance Johnson hits his 20th triple. He's the first National Leaguer to reach that plateau since Willie Mays in 1957.

  1. Guys like Porcello just don’t care. They’re rentals and like any renter, they don’t care. Porcello doesn’t bear down or focus on his pitches. They’re over the plate and for a guy with control, he doesn’t hit the corner like a seasoned vet should. All in all, a waste of money.

  2. The need to replace Ramos with Realmuto was never more in evidence than it was last night. You know that Cohen was watching & im sure this wasn’t lost on him!

  3. Gus, It sure the Porcello signing did not work out.

Dave, too bad Nido got COVID. It would have been nice to see him get some playing time. Mack thinks Ramos will opt out when the Mets get eliminated. Makes sense. He has had a very tough time dealing with Pandemic baseball.
