Mack - Weekly Draft Notes

If the season ended last night, the Mets would have the 10th pick in the draft.

Jon Heyman - @JonHeyman

Legendary baseball man Gary Hughes has died. Was with the Diamondbacks this year but also worked very effectively for the hometown Giants plus the Mariners, Rockies, Reds, Cubs, Expos, Red Sox, Marlins and Mets.

Len Kasper @LenKasper

RIP Gary Hughes. Arguably the greatest baseball scout ever. The sweetest, dearest, most generous guy. My heart is broken. I loved how he listened & never treated anyone badly. His legacy will be that--a good friend first & foremost. It's the best legacy anyone can leave

The Athletic - As negotiations with Minor League Baseball continue, Major League Baseball has also been working to create a different type of partnership with independent baseball leagues. Some could be officially announced soon, sources said.

MLB already has a working relationship with the Atlantic League that could be expanded, and it is said to be pursuing agreements with the American Association and the Frontier League as well. At least some of these discussions date as far back as the Winter Meetings in December.

As of now, those arrangements would not be nearly equivalent to the one MLB has with Minor League Baseball. But as word has spread among the ranks of minor-league owners, some believe MLB is attempting to create leverage as negotiations unfold over a new Professional Baseball Agreement, or PBA — the deal between MLB and MiLB.

MLBTR - Major League Baseball on Wednesday announced that the independent Atlantic League has been officially designated as MLB’s first “partner league.” As a partner league, the Atlantic League will “meet regularly with MLB to discuss joint marketing and promotional opportunities, including the leagues’ shared goal of providing baseball to communities throughout the United States,” per the press release announcing the partnership.

Mack - This is pitiful. Another attempt by the Commish to cut back cost. This decision also means they can suck money away from Indy teams that have it hard enough to survive.

Some Indy owners might find this sexy, but it isn’t. These teams are not really minor league affiliates.

We lose the old Cyclones and Kingsport and teams like the Sugar Land Skeeters get the players. The MLB gets a free ride and the owners don’t have to pay any of these players.

Pitiful.

Lookout Landing -

Marcelo Mayer may not be the pure athlete that Lawlar is, but I think there’s more offensive upside in this package with the potential for a .290 hitter with 20-25 home run power. The Corey Seager discussion mentioned above might not be the worst trajectory line to track as both guys are built the same way. Seager had some of the same questions on the pull-side ability coming out of high school and has turned himself into a plus hitter with plus power. I think that’s the ceiling for Mayer, and a profile to try and mirror his game after.

The three best prospects in college baseball?

1. Kumar Rocker, Vanderbilt

2. Jack Leiter, Vanderbilt

3. Adrian Del Castillo, Miami

Congratulations to Bash Boy Jason Bollman on his commitment to LSU

Brian Sakowski   @B_Sakowski_PG

Missed this one a few days ago. Big early JUCO pickup for LSU, Bollman is into the mid-90’s with one of the better sliders in the class. Will likely find his way onto some draft boards this spring

Pitt commit Quin Konuszewski (2021, Mich.) showing great feel with a CH/FB mix that has struck out 7 in the first 3 innings. Sitting 86-88 mph so far.

Good start for ‘21 RHP Vincent Trapani (WI), working 90-92 mph in the 1st and picking up a pair of strikeouts, one on 92 and one on a sharp CB at 77

Tennessee commit Christian Moore (2021,NY) follows up early LD 1B w/ this no-doubter to deep LF; Physical presence w/ loose, lofted stroke and real juice to the pull-side; Fluid actions in the dirt w/ good range, soft hands and + arm strength across

‘21 RHP Zach Dantuono (MO) showing well here for Recruits Baseball. FB up to 90 mph a few times, landing CB for strikes and missing bats with nasty CH

Brian Sakowski - This is pretty interesting. Projectable build with arm speed, FB has some carry to it, can project on the breaker, and has an equalizer in that changeup. Been around the zone too

Joe - @JoeDoyleMiLB

Jack Leiter does not have a 70-grade fastball.

Still the high man on IF Christian Moore. Some events he absolutely dominates, others he's pretty quiet. Strong, mature body with impressive actions on the dirt for his size. Quick hands, good balance and raw power at the plate. Top 100 guy for me.

2020 max velo:

Ryan Cusick - RHP - Wake Forest - 97.9

Jaden Hill - RHP - LSU - 97.8

Ian Villers - RHP - Cal - 97.3

Trevor Werner - RHP - Texas A&M - 97.1

Carter Raffield - RHP - Clemson - 96.9

Austin Becker - RHP - Texas Tech - 96.9

Matt Paul - @MPaulAdvisory

Advice to amateur baseball bloggers, scouting sites: Want to earn more credibility? Be more deliberate in seeing high level, pro players.

I see many too comfortable throwing metrics out on HS players that are insignificant in regards to their future potential role or profile!

Joe -  @JoeDoyleMiLB

@MPaulAdvisory Also, metrics are a very small piece of the puzzle

Colton Provey  - @ColtonProvey

Uncommitted 21’ RHP Thomas Higgins  bringing the heat w/ side of hammer. FB: 86-90 w/ arm side action. CB: 70-73 w/ late bite

Perfect Game Florida  -  @Florida_PG

Good FB/SL mix from Brailin Duran who was up to 90 in relief this morning. Uber-athletic, comes out easy and generates good life

Gavin Conticello (2021 FL) gets all of this one with a deep blast to straight away right

Brian Sakowski - @B_Sakowski_PG

Conticello really rose up boards this summer. Huge power projection with solid hit tool, has a chance to play the left side of the infield as well. A name to monitor, especially if there are continued strength gains over the winter.

Brian Sakowski -@B_Sakowski_PG

Trapani has been excellent, striking out 7 over 3 innings. FB holding 90-92 with flashes of sink and solid command, getting some whiffs on his CB as well. Double digit whiffs through 3.

  1. 10TH PICK? Let' lose today and get into single digits. It can be rewarding to be incompetent.

Gary Hughes RIP. One of the guys who no one knew who helped make baseball great.

Talent before next year's draft seems endless.

If you could trade JT Ginn and Matt Allan for Kumar Rocker, would you do it?

    Re: the Rocker trade idea

    In a heartbeat

Rocker is one of those rare birds that come along during a decade of drafting.

  3. Manfred once again proves he is penny wise and pound foolish.

  4. Velocity is nice, but Miguel Castro proved once again yesterday that it is a weak tool if not mastered.
