2-15, with 92 runs allowed in 118 IP. That is the record of Porcello, Wacha, and Matz. No team can thrive in a 60 game season with that level of epic failure. Oddly, Porcello has allowed just 4 HRs in 56 innings, so his performance has no doubt had some bad luck built in.
That said, rookies Peterson and Gimenez outperformed admirably. I expect good things from both in 2021.
And of course, Dom Smith's 32 XBHs in 174 at bats is remarkable. By comparison to another 1B, Ed Kranepool in 1968 had 17 XBHs in 373 at bats. Bright things lie ahead for Smith. When you look at him now, and the tub he was when first called up, there was a guy who learned and made huge adjustments. Good for him.
Tom, I would have never expected Matz to crater like that so I would have suffered his stats too, if I were to make decisions, but I wasn’t a fan of the other two guys. Stroman not being there and Syndergaard as well also tripped up the team. However, I’m expecting a QO for Stroman and him to accept it due to the uncertainty. If he declines, au revoir. Matz will probably be a swing guy next year, so there’s much to be done on the starting staff. I’d sign three starting pitchers.
As for the guys holding the bats, a complete team will need a CF, but I wonder if going one more year with Nimmo in the middle would really kill them. I’m on is below average, but not very far below and it buys time to rid some of the redundancy of the roster. If the NL doesn’t bring the DH back, the Mets’ problem with redundancy will be even worse. If you want to build your defense without the DH, you trade one of the two between Alonso and Smith for a pitcher. If there is a DH, you still can do that but the need isn’t as great. Assuming Davis can continue to improve at 3B, if you get a CF, then McNeil goes to second. What about Cano? If you want to be real ballsy, you trade both first basemen for two very good starters with years of control and put Cano at 1B, using Rosario as your utility guy. That might just be the easiest way and you lose a position that is pretty easily fillable.
*Nimmo is below average, but he isn’t far below average and it gives them time to find a CF. I’m below average at CF, too, but my iPad which can only can post a comment in the mobile version and that is microscopic, shouldn’t worry about my defense too much.
Let’s start by losing every game left... and let this be the last time in years we think of the draft as the best reward to the season.
Secondly let’s be grateful that some assets actually increase value like dom smith and Lugo Hard decision need to be made but they are easier when teams actually want your players
I'm just glad to put the Wilpons in my rearview mirror and can look forward with hope that things will get better. Hope you're doing okay, Mack. I'm thinking of you
If we were going to make a change at the top, Alderson was not the guy I was hoping they'd bring in. He never actually got to implement "Moneyball with Money" thanks to the Wilpons. Without their meddling, I'm sure he'll do fine.
BVW has done some things well. You have to give him credit for the last 2 drafts, for both the creativity of the plan and actually executing it and getting the top picks signed.
IMO, both Brodie and Luis deserve another season. Jettisoning both and bringing in replacements who will have to learn the players is not my way of improving.
I've read good things about the White Sox Catcher McCann, who is reportedly excellent on D and steadily improving with the bat. He sounds like a better FA target than Realmuto, who is probably a better all-around Catcher but is looking for 4-5 years at 20+ mil per. Too much for a 30 y.o who has had injury problems. Does anyone here know anything about McCann?

I share your positive thoughts on Peterson, Gimenez, and Dom. I would throw in Schreve.
ReplyDeleteAs for the negatives, I will leave those thoughts to others.
Nothing for Diaz?

Praying for a better 2021, for a ton of reasons, to include the start of the Cohen era.
ReplyDeleteEddie, I agree - except Jake deserves a shot at that 3rd Cy. Let's get the best draft slot possible.
ReplyDeleteErik, the last two drafts seem to have been far better than most in their drafting history, good point.
ReplyDeleteBVW needs to draft attractive prospects so he can trade them away for players about to be DFA'd on other teams. (Wait, too soon?)
ReplyDeleteMUCH! 😖
