of them receive qualifying offers, and what is the deadline for that? Stroman
is a prime candidate…The Mets have five days after the final game of the World
Series to extend an offer to Stroman, who will then have 10 days to decide
whether to accept it; Who might be a non-tender candidate, and when must the
club make that decision? Anthony suggests Steven Matz and Robert Gsellman. The deadline for the Mets to
tender contracts…is Dec. 2.”

as he nears free agency is that he didn’t pitch at all in 2020 because of
coronavirus-related concerns…it remains to be seen whether taking the season
off will affect him on the market.”

The Mets announce the club has
'traded' coaches with the Giants, bringing Wes Westrum to New York in
exchange for Cookie Lavagetto, who is recovering from a serious illness and
requested a position nearer to his home in Oakland. Mets manager Casey Stengel
met and became fond of his new coach during the recent All-Star Game, and
will be replaced by him as the team's second skipper in franchise history
when the 75 year-old 'Old Perfessor' retires in 1965. |
1973 |
In the fifth and deciding game,
the Mets win their second National League pennant in franchise history,
beating the Reds, 7-2. Tom Seaver, who gives up seven hits in 8.1 innings,
bests Cincinnati right-hander Jack Billingham in the Shea Stadium showdown. |
1973 |
During oral arguments in front of
the U.S. Supreme Court, Potter Stewart is handed a note with the startling
news that Vice President Agnew had just resigned. The message also informs
the glum Republican Justice, a big Reds fan, that the Mets are ahead of
Cincinnati in the NLCS, 2-0. |
2015: The Mets are
cruising along with a 2 - 1 lead behind rookie Noah Syndergaard in the 7th inning of
Game 2 of the NLDS when Chase
Utley barrels into SS Ruben Tejada to break up a potential inning-ending double
play. He not only succeeds, but also breaks Tejada's leg in the
process while the Mets vainly argue for an interference call. Major League Baseball will hand Utley a
two-game suspension for his unnecessarily violent slide, but in the meantime,
Los Angeles takes advantage of the controversial play to score four runs in the
inning and ends up a 5 - 2 winner, evening the series.

Tom,
ReplyDeleteCan you just hear George Steinbrenner if he was still here? He'd be screaming about the outfield padding that hung over RF causing Aaron Judge to not catch the Rays first HR. "Neutral site?! Who's dumb idea was that! We got robbed by stupid outfield padding!"
I'm stoked that I don't have to root for the Astros.
ReplyDeleteBob W
Great point Bob. What if we end up with an Astros - Braves WS? Hope both teams lose but that d'Arnaud does well?
