Lots of Steve Cohen news or non-news based on your perspective:

Bob Nightengale USA Today: Mets' sale to Steve Cohen still has one hurdle to clear: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.  “In the 2006 stadium lease agreement between the Mets and New York City, there’s a provision in which the mayor can prohibit the sale of the team to a ‘prohibited person,’ since Citi Field is on New York City owned park land. The lease defines a prohibited person as ‘any person that has been convicted in a criminal proceeding for a felony or any crime involving moral turpitude.’”

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: Bill de Blasio is unlikely to block Steve Cohen from becoming an MLB owner, but Jerry Reinsdorf will keep trying. “Like the August [USA Today] story [saying A-Rod was the front runner to buy Mets], this story is inaccurate. De Blasio, in reality, is not expected to “torpedo” Cohen’s plans before his approval reaches an owners' vote. De Blasio has enough problems…without jeopardizing the lease over a non-issue and enraging the vast majority of Mets fans who want Cohen to own the club.”

SNY.TV: Latest on Mets' sale process to Steve Cohen: One potential concern is starting to fade. “According to SNY's Andy Martino, there does not appear to be any momentum toward Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf being able to convince other owners to vote no on Cohen and ‘create a real problem.’”

Mike’s Mets wonders why the Mets never had the depth of talent that other teams had in “Failure to Learn”.

SNY.TV: Marcus Stroman takes shot at Yankees while also saying he'd pitch for them: 'Their pitching always folds in the end'. 'Besides Cole, there’s no current Yankee pitcher who will be anywhere in my league over the next 5-7 years'.

SNY.TV: Breaking down 8 external and internal starting pitching options Mets could turn to in 2021. Trevor Bauer, Seth Lugo, and Marcus Stroman are among the options. They also mention Steven Matz, Thomas Szapucki, Franklyn Kilomé, Masahiro Tanaka, and James Paxton.

Rising Apple: Mets should consider “buying high” on free agent pitcher Taijuan Walker. “Taijuan Walker was about as average as can be in his 5+ seasons with the Seattle Mariners. He was 24-24 with a 4.17 ERA…Walker finished strong with the Toronto Blue Jays this past season. He made six starts for them—going 2-1 with a magnificent 1.37 ERA.”

Metsmerized Online: Steven Matz Needs to Remain in the Bullpen Next Season.

Metsmerized Online: Alternative Catching Options Besides J.T. Realmuto. These include James McCannAustin RomineMike Zuninoand Gary Sanchez.

The Sports Daily: Mike Phillips' Mets Player Review Series: Robinson Chirinos.

Brian Joura Mets360: Comparing the 2020 salaries of Mets’ players to their production. For example, using FanGraphs and other sources data, Brian showed that Michael Conforto had a full season value of $16.1 million compared to an actual $3 million salary and Dominic Smith had a $14.4 million value against a salary of 200 thousand.

Today in Mets History Per Ultimatemets.com:

Born on this date:

Transactions:

New York Mets traded Duffy Dyer to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Gene Clines on October 22, 1974.

New York Mets released Dyar Miller on October 22, 1981.

NY Post: Roger Clemens’ ‘bizarre’ Mike Piazza bat throw is still shocking.

National Pastime.com:

1979

Ed Kranepool declares his free-agency, ending his 18-year major league career, played entirely with the Mets. The first baseman and pinch-hitter, who signed with the expansion team in 1962 at the age of 17 as an amateur free agent, set franchise records in eight categories, including the most hits (1,418), most games played (1,853), at-bats (5,436), and pinch-hits (90).

1986

After losing the first two games at home, the Mets pull even with the Red Sox in the World Series. Gary Carter's two Fenway Park home runs power New York to a 6-2 victory in Game 4 of the Fall Classic.

2000

In Game 2, the Yankees extend their World Series winning streak to 14 consecutive games, defeating the Mets, 6-5, in a game which is overshadowed by Roger Clemens throwing the barrel of a shattered bat at Mike Piazza as the Met catcher runs to first. The eagerly awaited at-bat, due to the Rocket's beaning of the Mets' superstar in July, results in the two players confronting one another and the emptying of both benches.

  1. Rays came to play. With Snell, all is well.

We hoped Matz would be Snell, but all we got in 2020 was Smell.

Robbie Cano would prefer the birthdays JUST SLOW DOWN.

Stroman angling for Yankees after ditching Mets in 2020...why would we want him back?

  2. I am sure when de Blasio sees Cohen, he sees $$ signs. He may therefore try to put certain "conditions" on his approval.

  3. A thought crossed my mind this morning. In addition to signing White Sox catcher McCann for all the baseball reasons, Steve Cohen may want it just to stick his finger in Jerry Reinsdorf's eye for all of his opposition to the sale.

  4. The Mets owe Reinsdorf for taking Tom Seaver in the Free Agent Pool back in the 83-84 season.
