Andy
Martino SNY.tv: A sharper image of Sandy Alderson's potential Mets front office
begins to emerge. “In addition to the names we reported last week as possible general
managers, Billy Owens and Bobby Heck, talk in the
industry last weekend expanded to include MLB senior vice president of baseball
operations Peter
Woodfork and Arizona Diamondbacks senior VP and assistant GM Ameil Sawdaye. A few Alderson
allies see Owens as a particularly strong candidate.”
Sports

wouldn't want to buy the New York Mets, mostly because he doesn't want fans
yelling at him about the team more than they already do. This was revealed in a
60 Minutes interview by SI's Jon Wertheim.”
Baseball
America: Andres Gimenez: Mets 2020 Rookie Of The Year. “Andres
Gimenez was better than
advertised. Regarded mostly for his speed and defense, Gimenez produced
offensively at a respectable .263/.333/.398 level with three home runs and
eight stolen bases in 49 games. He emerged as the team’s starter at shortstop,
ahead of Amed
Rosario, in September.”

Interesting that 50 years ago, on Gentry's and Grote's birthdays, Gentry started against Atlanta and the Mets clinched the pennant in the game you note. He didn't pitch great, but Ryan threw 7 solid relief innings, and Grote had a hit, too. They were no doubt having fun.
ReplyDeleteYanks currently having fun. Mets currently are not.
Funny how little the Yanks have gotten in the regular season out of Stanton, but he is earning that paycheck right now.
Make that 51 years! I need an analytical dept LOL
ReplyDeleteWait if you get an analytical dept., are you getting rid of your scouts?
ReplyDeleteThere will always be a need for someone attending college and baseball games looking for talent.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI saw a very nice article on some of what is going on in the Mets Instructional league. Can we find out who the Mets have assigned to their instructional league. I saw an article from the Washington Nationals where they listed all of their players.
By the way can’t the Mets have a good analytical department and good scouting department?
Raw
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the Mets have refused to release the list.
What The Fans Want
ReplyDeleteSometimes player personnel moves are made through repeated fans insistence, a fact very much noticed by sports franchise ownership who actually do watch sports television and listen to sports radio from time to time where there are call-in fans. Don't let any one of them kid you. They do pay attention because the fans are the ultimate consumer in all this.
Sometimes it is a sport franchise's management team making all of the calls personnel wise, and then selling us (the fans) on what they have just done personnel wise.
And then too, sometimes it is a combination of the two things above. For this sports team (the NY Mets) it is usually a combination of these two approaches. But since 2015 this strategy for some reason has not worked out so well. Maybe this can be reversed for 2021.
So what are the main key problems here personnel wise?
ReplyDelete(Again)
1. Adding a third High Quality (H20) third starter. Does it have to be a veteran starter like say a Trevor Bauer? A: No. But for some here it does or they could be bridge jumping come mid February 2021. After all, Trevor is probably the best starter available.
My preference is playing the numbers game instead. Here's why:
I'd go out and use that same $17 million a season to setup a grouping of three more from outside really good kid starters, to add to the three already here. Then bring all six to camp and let the best ones win starting jobs.
The Mets already have David Peterson slated for the 2021 NYM starting rotation. He's a first year new Mets starter that showed confidence and capability in most of his 2020 outings culminating in a really nice last start recently. But the Mets also have in-house three more, namely Thomas Szapucki, Harol Gonzales, and Corey Oswalt to consider and tryout in this next spring training.
So right there, the three in-house kid starters. We need three more but from outside.
These have to be young starters from other teams who show promise, but might be buried under too many other kid starters in the same one organization or a starting rotation on the parent club not allowing more than one new in-house promotion from AAA.
This is precisely what I am talking about here. Making the most from a somewhat limited trading position here with these Mets.
You could sign and trade a Marcus Stroman, who could fetch you maybe one or two (from the same one trade partner) of these young arms the Mets could use in their 2021 rotation. You could trade a well known Andres Gimenez super glove for one more. And then, use maybe an MiLB Met for the third.
Right there, the NYM would have six young arms to tryout for two places in their respective starting rotation.
A pretty fair and insightful 2020 NY Mets Report Card by NJ.com's own Justin Toscano. I concur totally with his assessments.
ReplyDeleteExcellent job done by the new kid on the block, Justin Toscano.
Keep the good work up!
Not sure how you all feel right now here...
ReplyDeleteBut here's how I feel about this playoff season.
1/ First off, I feel like the Miami Marlins should have been our NY Mets. Should have been and could have been. What killed the Mets chances. Three bad starters in the same one rotation, all veterans too.
2. The Houston Astros did not even have a .500% won/lost record. And they are in it. Is it okay now for me to whine? I hope so.
3. The Yankees essentially had one good starter all of this shortened season (Cole from a trade) and they made the second round.
4. Unless our President starts wearing his mask all the time, like he is supposed to, please do not have him throw out the Mets 2021 first pitch. It could be covered in whatever Covid19 is. There are 75 year old women all around the country mad at him today because he didn't leave his mask on yesterday. I've heard it eight times already since lunch today. Just wear the dang stupid thing to quiet the grey haired female mob forming!
Thank you, and have a pleasant day sir.
Tom:
ReplyDeleteInteresting point you make above on the 50 years ago pennant clinching game.
As some know here as well, Nolan Ryan threw one of the hardest fastballs that I ever had seen live in a game. But he tended to be a bit wild with it, which probably lead to his being traded from the Mets.
I use to always sit in the green seats as a kid, but I always brought my blue plastic Mets promotional day helmet along, just in case Nolan Ryan was called in from the bullpen.
