Regarding the current top 10 rankings, by position, in the 2021 draft, we move on to infielders.
This is a very talented infield draft, especially at shortstop.
I include all three field positions here… 2B, SS, 3B, though there are no second basemen in the top 10. There are, however, three third basemen.
The top 10 in the current average of the last eight mock drafts is:
1. 3B Brady House Windor Barrow HS
2. Matt McLain UCLA
3. 3B Alex Binelas Louisville
4. Luke Leto Portage Central HS
5. Jordan Lawler Dallas Baptist Prep HS
6. Marcelo Mayer Eastlake HS
7. 3B Izaac Pacheco Friendswood HS
8. Alex Mooney Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep HS
9. Michael Braswell Campbell HS
10. Cody Schrier JSerra HS
Eight Florida Gators ranked in the top 150 college players in the 2021 draft:
4. Jud Fabian (OF)
19. Tommy Mace (RHP)
30. Jack Leftwich (RHP)
53. Franco Aleman (RHP)
87. Ben Specht (RPH)
116. Jacob Young (OF)
122. Christian Scott (RHP)
148. David Luethje (RHP)
Lookout Landing had a great scouting report this week on Mason Black -
At 6-3, 215 pounds, Black already very much looks the part. He’s got high, broad shoulders and a strong lower half with long legs. He’s a weight room warrior.
The track record speaks for itself. In 2019, Black was 92-94 with a developing slider and changeup. All of those figures have taken massive strides forward. More on that shortly. His freshman campaign at LeHigh saw Black post a 4.36 ERA over 33 innings in ten appearances, five of which were starts. He punched out 28 hitters and walked just 12.
Then he turned a corner.
Black worked to clean up his mechanics and get stronger. By summer 2019, he was throwing harder and sporting better command of his pitches. He’d go on to pitch 36.1 innings at the Cape Code League for Brewster, posting a 1.49 ERA and punching out 39 along the way. His walk rate fell too, surrendering just 12 free passes in more innings than he pitch at school.
Black then carried that success over to Lehigh in 2020 where he’d post a 3.68 ERA in just 22 innings, striking out 29 and walking just 8. He’s turned into a legitimate strikeout arm and the walks have continued to fall all along the way.
It is time for my first consensus Mock Draft. This averages the seven mock draft posts in September and October this year. We will take it up to the tenth pick and leave it there.
Remember, this is not my picks. It’s the consensus picks of the so-called experts:
1. RHP Kumar Rocker Vanderbilt
2. RHP Jack Leiter Vanderbilt
3. OF Jud Fabian Florida
4. SS Matt McLain UCLA
5. 3B Brady House Windor Barrow HS
6. C Adrian Del Castillo Miami
7. RHP Jaden Hill LSU
8. 3B Alex Binelas Louisville
9. OF Ethan Wilson South Alabama
10. RHP Gunnar Hogland Ole Miss

Arkansas SS Jalen Battles looks like the real deal. JUCO transfer out of McLennan CC. 6-2, 205. Just launched one out to left center. No doubt shot. Already built like a pro. *Looks like Correa*. Said to have a 60 arm. Haven't seen enough def. from him to make a judgment there
One of the bigger questions headed into the 2021 MLB Draft was going to be "where's the velo?"... After all, only 3 2021 draft-eligible arms touched 97 in-game in 2020.

Peter Heubeck, Gilman HS (MD) - Projectable frame at 6'3, 170. FB sat 88-91 and T93 with late run and high spin, solid CB with good shape, and a CH thrown in too. Has touched 94 this summer. Wake Forest commit, could be very fun arm on campus.

I’d heard a lot of good things about D3 transfer Jonathan Haab Has been up to 95 in pens. 89-91 mph today with flashes of an Aavg CB and avg SL. Defense behind him by SS Gabe Howell. Name to follow for next July
Brian Sakowski - @B_Sakowski_PG
Early returns on my first couple days of diving into #PGJC research...looks like the speculation of this being one of the best JUCO years ever in terms of talent were correct. And we haven’t even started the winter break transfer season yet. Should be a very fun spring!
Here's hoping spring high school and college baseball can be back on the regular track. As well as some minor leagues next year.
ReplyDeleteSo, Gunnar Hogland is the consensus # 10 pick falling to Mets, but he hasn't hit 96 in a game? I dunno.

ReplyDeleteThis is very early in the mock draft process. It is always dominated by college players because there isn't enough info out there on the high school kids yet.
Check the 10 am post... Catcher Henry Davis is currently my pick at 1.1.
