Good Morning. Happy Birthday Armando Benitez, Carlos Hernandez, and Hansel Moreno. Matt Blackham and 14 other Minor League Mets become Free Agents, we get an Instructional League report, and Jacob deGrom one of 3 NL Cy Young Finalists.

Mets Links:

Mets.com: deGrom up for 3rd straight NL Cy Young. deGrom joined Cincinnati’s Trevor Bauer and the Cubs' Yu Darvish as the finalists for this year’s award.

SNY.TV: Ranking 5 big ticket free agent and trade targets for Mets if J.T. Realmuto shies away from New York. 1. George Springer, 2. Francisco Lindor,  3. Trevor Bauer, 4. Nolan Arenado, 5. Liam Hendriks.

Joel Sherman NY Post: Lindor, Darvish, Arenado are Mets trade options Steve Cohen can pounce on.

Primetimesportstalk.com: The Mets Should Not Trade for Nolan Arenado. The decline in performance, the contract and the home/non-Coors field numbers are cited plus this – “Arenado is hitting an unimpressive .229 with a .275 on-base percentage while striking out 26.5 percent of the time in the batter’s box at Citi Field. Additionally, Arenado is hitting .190 with one home run in five career Postseason games with Colorado.”

NY Post: Mets’ hunt for pitching could bring them to Charlie Morton. “Morton turns 37 this month and was coming off three straight fine seasons before pitching to a 4.74 ERA in nine regular-season starts with the Rays this year.”

Baseball America listed all the players that became Minor League Free Agents this past weekend.  Here are the Mets Minor League Free Agents:  Matt Blackham, Jake Hager, Carlos Hernandez, Joel Huertas, Braxton Lee, Hansel Moreno, Jose Moreno, Max Moroff, Jarrett Parker, Darwin Ramos, Nataneal Ramos, Luc Rennie, Francisco Rios, Peter Tago, Adonis Uceta.

Baseball America also listed minor league players the Mets retained/signed: Harol Gonzalez, Bruce Maxwell, David Rodriguez, Mitchell Tolman, Luis Carpio, Johneshwy Fargas.  These players will still be eligible for the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft, meaning a team could draft them and not have to add them to their 40 man roster.

Mets.com also had a great Mets instructional league prospect report yesterday with lots of info like Matthew Allan “showing leadership” J.T. Ginn “He’s in great shape and takes his rehab seriously”, Francisco Alvarez “He’s just improving every day behind the plate…and this about one of my favorite Mets prospects Wilmer Reyes – “has seen time all over the diamond as well, impressing at multiple positions while really opening eyes with his right-handed bat...MVP of camp so far, with the power, the production offensively, and also his defense.” Wilmer is Rule 5 eligible this winter.

SearleBaseball.com: Don’t sell him short: Why Stroman is the Best Starter on the Market. “In an era dominated by sluggers, Stroman’s greatest asset is his ability to keep the ball in the park. Since debuting with the Blue Jays in 2014, Marcus Stroman has produced a ground ball rate of 58.6 percent, trailing only Dallas Keuchel for the best mark among pitchers with at least 800 innings in that span.”

The Washington Post: Baseball survived a difficult 2020, but 2021 could be even worse. “But no one has any clarity about what that [2021] season might look like, including the possibility of fans in the stands, given the unknowable trajectory of the coronavirus and the status of a potential vaccine. There is a 162-game schedule with an April 1 Opening Day in place, but the sport is likely to be at the mercy of individual states and municipalities — and, in the case of the Blue Jays, the Canadian government — much as it was in 2020.”

  1. Arenado is a lot less of a hitter out of Colorado. If you do get him, don’t overpay.

The write up on the kids in the instructional league was very positive.

I’d be surprised if any team takes Wilmer Reyes in Rule 5. He likely needs a full minor league season to be ready.

I was against resigning Stroman long term after 2020, but if he is the best talent and really wants the Mets, we need lots of pitching of QUALITY, so why not.

Springer? Interested. Realmuto? Interested. Let’s build a juggernaut.

  2. I also heard good things early in camp about the top prospects. Promising stuff about Newton and Palmer who may finally have grown into their bodies. Now time to get those bat skills and plate discipline in check and rocket up rankings.
