Scouting Report - LHP - Drew Gray

 Drew Gray

LHP 6-3 180 Belleville HS (IL)

PG -

Drew Gray is a 2021 OF/LHP with a 6-3 180 lb. frame from Swansea, IL who attends Belleville East. Long and lean athletic build, still has huge physical projection remaining. True two-way prospect with a 50/50 chance to end up at either position. 6.79 runner in the sixty. Left handed hitter with a loose swing from a deep hand load, tension free swing with good lift through contact, has flow into the ball and is well timed, squared up the ball frequently in the games and showed his power potential to both sides of the field. Has taken a big step forward on the mound, very clean delivery with lots of angle and ease of operation. Topped out at 92 mph with a high spin rate fastball, sharp slider with power and command. Ceiling may be higher on the mound but no reason to push either direction for now until he is closer to physical maturity.

Drew Gray, LHP/OF, St. Louis Pirates 2021

Gray headed into Fort Myers coming off a loud summer, and there was some extra buzz surrounding him given how well his development at IMG had gone between the All-American Classic and WWBA. Gray was scattered a bit, but still electric, showing the kind of loose, easy, and extremely fast arm that portends big velocity projection and spinning two very good breakers as well.

Prospect Worldwide -

Drew Gray – LHP: Legit 2-way potential. Gray offers similar high spin rates on his Slider (2750-2850 RPM), tough on both RHH/LHH. Has a heavy Fastball approach at times 90-93 MPH (2550 RPM) challenges hitters up in the zone until they prove they can handle it, and grades as a Plus (60) pitch. Would like to see more usage of the Slider with how dominate it can be vs both LHH and RHH, and a 3rd pitch which could be developed as he focuses more on pitching moving forward. And remember he’s a 2-way guy, with a ton of athleticism in the outfield, and some pull side power. Teams likely will look at him on the mound with his plus ability to create High-Spin and a high amount of Swing and Miss on top of it. But don’t be shocked if a team gives him a legit chance at becoming a 2-way.

Prospects Live -

Drew Gray - Drew Gray may have the most two-way upside of any player in this draft class. He’s a lanky kid at 6’3, 180 pounds and he showcases a very smooth swing at the dish with good bat-to-ball skills. At the plate, Gray did draw a walk against Chase Petty, but struck out following a nasty sequence from Mason Albright. He does have a lot of potential on the mound as well. While he did allow a home run to Harry Ford, he showed off a solid fastball with run in the low-90’s and a downer curveball in the high-70’s that he controls well. The upside is immense at both sides of the game and he could very well be a Day 1 pick.
