As
we had yesterday on Mack’s Mets, Jared Porter had his introductory Press
Conference.
SNY.TV:
Takeaways from Mets new GM Jared Porter, including building better roster depth
for next season. “Emphasis on innovation; Roster depth will be key; Not
shying away from World Series goal; What needs to improve right away – ‘I think
right away probably player development stands out that we’re looking to
upgrade. It’s an area we can add some depth.’; Learning on the fly.”
"Great reputation. Forward thinker. Improving player development"

SNY.TV:
Sandy Alderson explains why Mets picked Jared Porter as GM, details new power
structure. “'He really has the vision that we want to execute upon'. ‘I
think it's a flexible arrangement,’ Alderson said. ‘For example, I've already
turned a couple of things over to Jared. We have a daily baseball operations
meeting. I've been on every one of those meetings. I'm not sure I need to be on
every one of those meetings. And there are lots of things that can be decided
by Jared that don't have to involve me or only involve me briefly.’”
SNY.TV:
Jared Porter embracing Steve Cohen's 'three-five years' World Series goal:
'I want those expectations'. 'I would just say that hearing comments like that
motivates me'.
SNY.TV:
Jared Porter praises James McCann, Marcus Stroman, and other Mets. “Porter
said he 'really likes' James McCann, while Marcus Stroman 'wants to throw the ball in the
biggest moments'.”

Post: Mets’ pursuit of J.T. Realmuto was derailed by time. “I think more
than anything else, this was a timing issue for us,’’ Alderson said on Monday’s
Zoom call to introduce new GM Jared Porter. “We have a number of needs. We can
afford to wait to fill some of them. We can’t afford to wait to fill all of
them.”

“…if they want to build immediately on the momentum they already have created

George Springer or two of the above — to their
patrons before the Hot Stove turns off.”

My spin -
— Mack (@JohnMackinAde) December 14, 2020
Sandy's comments about a current slow prime beef section... coupled with an early sign of McCann over a slow JT negotiating stance... will send signals to Bauer's and Springer's agents that we aren't going to wait around forever.
I look for no Bauer or Springer movement until after Christmas.

1967 |
The Mets obtain Tommy Agee,
the 1966 Rookie of the Year, and utility infielder Al Weis from the White Sox
in exchange for Buddy Booker, Tommy
Davis, Jack Fisher, and Billy Wynne. New York's newest additions will
both play a pivotal role in the team's 1969 World Championship season. |
2002 |
With the threat of losing their heavy-hitting second
baseman, Jeff Kent, the Giants sign former All-Star free agent Edgardo
Alfonzo (.308, 16, 56) to a four-year deal. The 29 year-old infielder,
who was named the Mets All-time second baseman in August, was not tendered
arbitration after turning down a number of contract proposals from the team. |
2004 |
After offering a four-year deal worth approximately $53
million, the Mets announce the club has come to terms with Pedro Martinez
(16-9, 3.90 ERA). The former Red Sox ace, who posted a 117-37 record in seven
seasons with Boston, criticizes his former team for not being more aggressive
in retaining his services. |
1961: The Mets continue
spending, sending Lee Walls and
$100,000 to the Dodgers for Charlie Neal. Neal, the 5th ex-Dodger on the roster,
was downed by the measles in the spring and a knee spur later on.
1990: The Mets send
veteran lefty Bob Ojeda and
minor leaguer Greg Hansell to the Dodgers for OF Hubie Brooks.
2002: The Mets trade
slick-fielding SS Rey
Ordonez to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for two minor
leaguers to be named. The Mets also throw in $4.25 million to help offset
Ordonez's $6.25 million salary. Ordonez, who had called the Mets fans
"stupid", departs as 3B Edgardo Alfonzo signs a four-year deal
with the Giants,
opening up the left side of the Mets infield. Nineteen-year-old Jose Reyes, the Mets' top prospect,
is expected to have first shot at the shortstop's job.

I’m not in love with the McCann signing, but I don’t know what Boras was asking for. Last year Boras signed all his guys early and got them lots of money: Rendon, Cole, Ryu, etc. This year, he’s back to his usual style. This may be just giving him the finger as we know he and Alderson have had words in the past in the press. Gosh, I really wanted Realmuto.l.
ReplyDeleteOn Porter, as Carig wrote in The Athletic, in introductory speeches you always hear the words, communicator, collaborator, analytics driven, etc. BVW was innovative too, right? I’ll give the guy a chance.
Marcus Semien to sign soon... I don’t know Springer is all the rave he’s getting, but now you e backed yourself into that corner, no? Front offices know if Bauer is legit. If his ball is moving per Statcast at a better rate, he is. If it isn’t too big an improvement, give me Tanaka and Ordozzi for Bauer’s money.
Gus - I am all for giving the guy a chance. He was instrumental in fining gems that others tossed away in Boston. Hope he can do it for the Mets.
ReplyDeleteI will be very interested on seeing what kind of team they plan to build at all levels of the system. Stuff like how they play defense, how fundamentally sound they are, etc.
I certainly agree with everything you wrote John.
ReplyDeleteWow . I don't remember that Ojeda for Brooks trade at all. Without looking, I suspect that didn't work out very well for the Mets at that time.
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing this everyday. The memories . . .
1969 - Mets traded Hubie to California one year later for back-up outfielder Dave Gallagher. Not sure that worked out as well. When Daryl left the 90's entered a dark period until Mike Piazza showed up in 1998.
