Takeaways from Mets owner Steve Cohen's Twitter Q&A, including what he
views as successful season. “On honoring Tom Seaver – ‘We want there to be a
celebration of the greatest Met ever. So we’ll do it when we can all congregate
back at Citi Field at a ballgame at a date that the family approves of. We’re
looking forward to honoring the greatest Met ever.’"
Steve Cohen was asked on the Mets' YouTube channel what success in Year 1 of his ownership will resemble: “That we have a playoff caliber team and that we have improved our performance in a significant way ... I would be disappointed if we didn’t step up in performance.”

Post: Steve Cohen’s message for Mets fans wanting to sign ‘everybody’. “’As
a fan they want me to sign everybody tomorrow, but is that a sustainable
strategy?’ Cohen said. ‘Ultimately you want to develop talent. You want to
develop your farm system…Yes, you can go buy players, but you buy players that
are in their 30s potentially…performance of players tends to decline once they
are in their early 30s... Everybody
wants to win now — I want to win now..But I also don’t want to put ourselves in
a position where if we don’t win now we have just hampered our ability to win
down the road.’”

Mets hire Zack Scott as assistant GM.
NY
Post: Mets hire Zack Scott as part of Red Sox front-office trend. “Scott,
who was a finalist for the job that went to Porter, spent the past two years as
Red Sox assistant GM, overseeing analytics, baseball systems and advance and
professional scouting.”
Jared Porter on his new assistant GM Zack Scott:
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) December 23, 2020
“I’ve known Zack for over 15 years, and worked with him daily for 10 of those years. He’s a strong leader who is a very creative and dynamic thinker. Zack is well rounded in all areas of baseball operations."

— Tim Britton (@TimBritton) December 23, 2020
"He and Zack (Scott) would be the subjective and objective voices in the room for players. But they would really complement each other."
The Mets hired Scott today to be a senior VP and assistant GM to Porter.

Going to be interesting to see how he and Porter work to fill out the #Mets analytics team. They sorely need to add personnel in that department
Also of note in the Mets’ hiring of Red Sox assistant GM Zack Scott: The Mets won’t be able to hire additional Red Sox front office members through at least the offseason of 2021-22 https://t.co/q0TO59hjq4

Here's why Mets need to sign Noah Syndergaard to a long-term contract extension.
The clock is ticking if the Mets want to keep Noah Syndergaard. “For the Mets, extending
Syndergaard would lock in a legitimate top of the rotation talent to go along
with Jacob deGrom as the team tries to become a
perennial contender.”
Today Mark @Feinsand reported that the Mets are the “team to watch” in regards to Trevor Bauer.

A little over 18 years ago, Darryl Strawberry’s now-wife, Tracy, was pulling him out of drug houses. She chased him around, banged on doors, always found him.

Mets legend Darryl Strawberry on Trevor Bauer, Sandy Alderson's return, and
advice for Pete Alonso. 'My hope for the Mets organization is that they can
go back to building up the farm system' On Pete Alonso: “I think the key is, having the
season he did, you either learn from it or you don’t,” Strawberry said. “I saw
some games where there was too much trying to pull everything. It’s about staying
on the baseball and hitting it hard.
NY
Post: Pete Alonso has ‘helluva’ plan to fuel Mets bounce-back. “Right now,
before I get to camp, it’s refining my swing, getting it to where I want it.
Once I get my timing down in spring training, that’s when I can really have
some fun playing around with some certain things we’re talking about. It’s
going to be some fun.”

Merry Christmas, everyone. Enjoy, and be well.
ReplyDeleteFargas continues to hit - maybe he will show he can compete for a 5th OF spot.
David Rodriguez keeps hitting too - a long shot for 2nd catcher, perhaps? Or 3rd?
I will try to watch this Strawberry video soon, as I have time, to see Darryl the preacher in action:

With all the pain and suffering of 2020, it certainly does not feel like the normal joyous time of the year that it should be, and I know that many, many people will not be having a Merry Christmas. I have been lucky that I have been able to keep my head down and out of the virus this year, but I still think about all those that will have one or more of the 325,000 people missing from the table this week.
ReplyDeleteWith that all said, I have been very thankful to all you guys on the site for keeping things normal in these non-normal times.
At the risk of omitting anyone, a special shout-out to Tom, Reese, Mack, and John for their many informative and thought-provoking postings. It is always great to read the comments of Zozo, Jimmy, Dallas, Eddie, and all the others too numerous to mention by name.
Thank you, Stay safe, and Merry Christmas to all!
Thanks Remember 1969, and you too.
ReplyDeleteSomeone I know who was not a close friend but more than a casual acquaintance died of COVID today. Relentless.
I am very sorry to hear about your loss. It is so time to move on from this.
ReplyDelete2020 just keeps on giving. After the 40 inch snowfall last week in the Binghamton area, today we are getting 2 to 3 inches of rain. With all the snow melt and rain, there are major flood warnings through the whole valley. I am fine up here on the hill, but there are a lot of people that live down in the Susquehanna River valley that will be affected in a horribly negative way. I am not sure what we did here in our little area to irritate God, but he sure doesn't seem very happy with us.
Praying for all those in the towns along the river tonight.
Thanks 1969. And thanks as well to the great writers here - Mack, Reese, Tom, Ray and Dave as well as our friends Mike Steffanos at Mike's Mets. Brain Joura, Gus, Chris, and the other writers at Mets360, John and Mike at Metsradamus, Ernest Dove, Kevin Kernan at ballnine, plus all our readers and commentators. Glad you stop by and keep coming back.
