Steve Cohen in this week’s Serby Q&A: “If you’re going to be an owner and you don’t want to win, why be in sports?” https://t.co/ldNlNvA4Bx via @nypostsports

Steve
Serby of the NY Post had a Q&A with Steve Cohen, here are some takeaways:
Surpassing
the Luxury Tax threshold: “I think at some point we will, but maybe not this
season. I’m not afraid to go over it, but you want to have flexibility on our
payroll. Long-term contracts can limit a team’s ability going forward.”
The
Yankees: “You know what I’d love? To play them in the Series again. The whole
city would be on fire. But this time, we win.”
Management
style: “I hire good people, smart people, people like (team president) Sandy
Alderson and (GM) Jared Porter, and then I set our goals and hold people
accountable. I don’t micromanage, and I let people have the runway to do their
jobs.”
Steve Cohen, in the Serby Q&A, indicated he’s not in talks for SNY.

Lupica NY Daily News: Future looks Amazin’ again: Steve Cohen wins 2020 by
making the Mets a team to watch again. “Will Mets fans love Steve Cohen in

completely official about the official new owner of the Mets: The guy who feels
like the biggest player in town these days isn’t even a player.”

On Baseball: Steve Cohen Says It Again: Mets Fans – This Is Not A One And Done
Deal. “You’re thinking like a fan, you know you want to win yesterday,”
Cohen said while answering fan questions Wednesday on “One-on-One” with Howie
Rose. “But in trying to win, you also want to create sustainable winning, which
means you’ve got to sort of plan, not just this year, but multiple years.”
Rob Rogan Mets360: Sandy Alderson and the
remnants of austerity. “Much to the delight of Mets fans, Cohen appears to
be wasting little time in shoring up the organizational shortcomings that were
a perverse mainstay of the Wilpon era… Restoring
a bit of order, however, likely means the freewheeling spending of Cohen’s coffers
some fans dreamed of might not come to fruition.”

Mets: 2021 Can't Be Another Lost Year for Mets Prospects. “I think that

spending just 43.0 innings in center field with the Mets, Heredia displayed
some promising signs over his limited playing time, posting a 1 OAA…he featured
a career 14 OAA heading in 2020 – and there’s a solid chance his impressive
results will return if provided with more playing time moving forward.”

I hear Steve Cohen trying to tamp down a bit on 2020 Mets' fans spending expectations. But the Dodgers are considering either Arenado or Lemahieu? They, if so, are NOT putting a lid on their spending. I think we need to fight fire with fire.
ReplyDeleteMets interested in Ha Seong Kim? Reese called that one. Would the Mets do both a Kim and a Sugano?
Tom,
ReplyDeleteDodgers are a few steps ahead on the Mets but I agree that the Mets can't get beat if there is a player they want. That being said, Springer would be my priority and then 1 or two starting pitchers. I think depth will be very important in 2021 but are two second line pitchers better than Bauer and a third line pitcher? That is why Sandy gets the big bucks.
Greetings boys! Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI believe the Dodgers having just won a W.S. will want to reset their team. Let’s not forget, they have prospects coming up too. The Dodger move would be to sign Marcus Simien to play 3B as a player going into his prime now. I know he’s only had one good year, but if he’s up for a three year deal, I’d do that. No Arenado, no DJLM, no 36 year old Turner and no trading for Lindor. And, they need starting pitching.
I’d do exactly that for the Mets too.
Does anyone here know anything about Art Warren? His MnL #s in '18 and '19 are eye-popping, yet Seattle released him.
ReplyDeleteIs he worth a shot for our pen?
Bill,
ReplyDeleteTwo teams gave up on him this winter, Seattle at the end of the season and now the Rangers. He will be 28 next year, has a mid 90's fastball and, as you said, really good minor league stats the last two years. I think he falls into a similar category as Matt Blackman who put up good numbers in the minors for the Mets before being released a few months ago then signing a minor league deal with the A's. I can see Art Warren signing a similar deal this winter with a team where he thinks he will get a chance to pitch in the bigs next year. Not sure if he will see the Mets as a good opportunity but if so he will probably be in Syracuse to start the year.
