Max McGwire
1B 6-2 185 Capistrano Valley HS (CA)
PG -
Max McGwire is a 2021 1B/RHP/OF with a 6-2 185 lb. frame from Irvine, CA who attends Capistrano Valley. Long and lean projectable build, noticeably stronger and more filled out since the last time seen. Right handed hitter, has an easy low tension swing, gets extended through contact with lift out front, present bat speed with the ability to drive the ball to the pull side, still very projectable for adding additional bat speed and strength at contact. 7.07 runner, very athletic at first base, moves well and will have plus range at that position, easy arm strength and can adjust his arm slot making different throws, has the athletic ability and arm to play all over the field aside from first base. Son of former big leaguer Mark McGwire
McGwire himself is viewed upon as an elite prospect. At the plate, he is already a solid power hitter, with the potential for even greater pop as his 6’2″, 185 pound frame fills out. His swing looks similar to his father’s, with his hands held high and a short, quick path to the ball, allowing his power to explode through the swing.
Defensively, McGwire is not necessarily stuck at first base. He is considered to be athletic enough to slide over to third, and could potentially play at either corner outfield position. Of course, that profile could change once his body fills out, leaving McGwire to remain at first.
Max McGwire - This is one name that will get talked about because his bloodlines are pretty decent; son of Mark McGwire and all. The younger Mac doesn’t back down from it either, wearing no. 98 at the showcase in honor of his dad's big 1998 season. All comparisons aside, Max is player in his own right. He drew a couple of walks in four at bats at the showcase, and he got a hit in the first inning. With runners in scoring position he was able to make an adjustment on an offspeed pitch and turn on it for a single down the line. He’s got really quiet hands at the plate and covers most of the plate. As small a sample as it was, the PG All-American game showed he can hit, and there’s he’s got more than enough track record of power to suggest that’ll be a big piece of his game as well.
Al Leiter's son Jack and now Mark's son Max. Looks like a read interesting draft this year.
ReplyDeleteWe could use a McGwire
ReplyDeleteDidn't Sandy draft the Dad?
ReplyDeleteI grew up a McGwire fan and followed him from the A's to the Cardinals. I went to back to back doubleheaders (4 games) at Shea of Mets vs Cards in 98 and saw him hit 49 & 50 I believe. Would love to see the Mets draft his kid. I have like 200 different McGwire cards from back in the day. I would collect any different card I could find.
ReplyDeleteComing up... Louie Van Wagoner
ReplyDeleteAnother wrinkle to Mark McGwire and the Mets - the Mets had the #1 pick in the 1984 draft and wanted to pick Mark. He told the Mets he wanted to stay on the West Coast and so they chose Shawn Abner.
