Player Review: Amed Rosario
2020 Stats: 46 Games, 143 At Bats, .252 Batting Average, 36 Hits, 3 Doubles, 1 Triple, 4 Home Runs, 15 RBI’s, 20 Runs Scored, .643 OPS, -0.1 WAR
Story: After a strong finish to 2019, the Mets had high hopes that Amed Rosario would continue his breakthrough performance in 2020. That simply didn’t happen as Rosario never got going with the bat. Walks remained an issue for Rosario, who only drew four all season, but the extra-base power the Mets were hoping would compensate for the lack of on-base skills vanished to the tune of just eight extra-base hits in 143 at bats. Rosario also didn’t steal a single base and attempted just one theft all year, a significant decline from his 19 steals in 29 attempts a year ago.
It's hard to overstate how bad Rosario was in 2020.
ReplyDeleteHe still can't backhand a ball, the defense is probably the worst at SS in baseball.
But it was the ABs that were so frustrating. He rivaled Pete Alonso for most thrown-away ABs, flailing away, utterly clueless as to divining the pitcher's intentions.
As for the zero steal attempts, it's just mind-boggling that the team allowed him to shrink like this. What the hell? (I realize you have to get on base in order to steal, but still.)
He seems uncoachable, dense.
All that said: The pure talent at the plate does exist; there's thunder in that bat (but such a long swing). It's not hard to imagine him getting the offensive side together and putting up some impressive seasons. I don't think he can play SS.
I think he's an interesting guy for 2B, beginning on the bench. Hopefully it will be his wake-up call.
Haven't written him off yet. I'd entertain a trade, for sure, but wouldn't flip him for the sake of chance.
Again: Hard to draw too big a conclusion based on Covid season w/out a batting coach in the dugout.
