  1. I have been saying that we should never trade any of our young minor Pitcher but we absolutely Stole them...

on a normal year thats not enough to get one of the them but to get both Lindor and Carrasco...

    what a fleece...

  2. AMAZING DEAL for us!!! We didn’t give up any top 5 talent, a Rosario who we had no room for and Giminez who was coming on to his own but still not proven.
We get back a top 10 player who we should sign ASAP and and a great pitcher.

Now maybe we sign Jackie Bradley junior instead of Springer. We added more offense to an amazing lineup. So we can go defense now.

    I absolutely love Carrasco

  3. Different owner, same front office idiots equals same stupid trades.
You CANNOT give up 4 players with 4 or more years of control for a 1 year of Lindor even if Carrasco is part of the deal unless a contract of Lindor was already agreed upon.

Who the F will play shortstop next year if Lindor walks? Rosario? no, Gimenez? no. He has the Mets not over a barrel now but over a cannon.

God, is hard to root for these idiots. No foresight, no patience and always go back to the failed GM's that have done nothing when they were with the team.

No one should have expected the Mets to become the Dodgers in one year. They needed pitching, a CF and a better BP and build from there.

Why couldn't the Mets simply sign Hand, Springer and then trade for Carrasco or other pitcher if they need it to do that. Say Rosario for Carrasco? Then if Gimenez wasn't the answer in 2021, you go after Lindor.

Now the Mets have put themselves against the wall because you cannot trade for Lindor, give up the prospects and not go all in. Now you have to sign Springer regardless of cost and possibly Bauer and Hand because otherwise, why trade for Lindor?

What happens next year when Lindor, Stroman, Syndergaard, Conforto, Matz are all free agents?.

The logic went to lunch in 2021 for the Mets.

  4. I agree with Viper on the importance of a long term deal for Lindor.

  5. Zozo, we get Lindor for 1 year. They get two immediate replacements with 3/4 years of control in Rosario and at least 5 in Gimenez who could have been our next Ordonez. Plus two prospects.

It would be a great deal if and I mean if the Mets had an already agreed upon contract extension with Lindor. Otherwise to me, is a bad deal with no foresight and with a one year window to win.

  6. I am with Viper. I would have kept Gimenez - defense like Ordonez with a better bat. Carrasco will be 34 next year. He may just be a one or two year guy as well.

This smacked like a Brodie deal to me. Time will tell.

  7. Sorry, I can't agree with Viper or John. I have to believe that there were already talks to extend Lindor or Sandy would not have given up both shortstops. Either that, or he plans to take advantage of the glut of superstar infielders on the market next year, although I believe the former.

I, too, regret giving up Gimenez, and would have preferred Davis instead, but it is still a great trade for the Mets. We have upgraded both the lineup and the rotation significantly, and the only major asset given up was Gimenez. Wolf and Greene are still unproven prospects, 2 to 3 years away from contributing. I am all in with this trade.

Now, we still need to go hard after Springer. Maybe add another decent starter for depth, and 1 or 2 quality arms for the pen.

  8. I unfortunately remember how naively excited I was over the last Cleveland superstar IF we got--Roberto Alomar. His near or over annual .900 OPS dropped 250-300 points in NY. Yes, he was older.

  9. I like it. Hopefully the Indians threw in Lindor chocolates to sweeten the deal

  10. I agree with Herb and Zozo on this one. Hate to see Gimenez and Greene go; would rather have seen Vientos, and would rather have gotten back one of the younger pitchers on that Cleveland staff, but love the thought of Lindor at short and Carrasco is a very good pitcher.

Pretty sure there is something else in the works - they just traded a lot of infield depth. I can see them potentially looking at Jurickson Profar or Kiki Hernandez for a utility role. They are pretty exposed if Lindor goes down for any amount of time with injury. I like Guillorme as a fill-in and utility guy, but I don't think he is a starter for a month if needed.

I also feel that the door just shut on Bauer. (not crying much about that though)

  11. Remember, folks, it is the finished product that matters. Hopefully we will have a masterpiece when all assembled.

I noted it earlier today, Lindor had more than 80 XBH in each of 2017, 2018, and 2019. Extraordinary

  12. Yes, exactly right, Tom. I have been trying to think about that finished product for a bit now. It is hard to believe they will start the season with an infield defense of Davis-Lindor-McNeil-Alonso. Bad-Great-Probably below average-below average. The offense it brings could be special, but seems like putting a Monet in a high school art show for the defensive side.

I think there are other moves coming soon.

  13. Viper see where your coming from and I was always saying sit until next offseason to get one of the free agent shortstops. But that was after the return I see we gave up for him and Carrasco. If we had to give up any of our top 5 I would of been against this deal. But I believe these 2 guy were 2 third round picks. So that can be replaced.

Giminez has a great glove but I’m not into the thinking he has turned the page on his hitting last year. Yes he reminds me of Ordonez but ordonez never got us anywhere.
Rosario like I said earlier was expandable because he was gonna ride the pine. So you were going to pay him and lose a year of control anyways.
You gave up full control of 2 younger prospects that were rated 9 & 10 on our prospect list. They aren’t guaranteed to be studs, so to me I would of traded both of them straight up for Carrasco alone. Also in the all unlikely hood of not signing Lindor to an extension we will be getting a second and fifth round pick in return in next years draft. So you get 10 years of control back for 2 youngsters.

Last years team was one of the best in history for our Metsies IMO, now you just made the order even better by adding Lindor and McCann and defense just got a whole lot better as well at Catcher and better at ss over the games Rosario played.

Also by getting Carrasco at $13 per year we still may be able to get Hand and/or Hendricks. Also you have Carrasco for 2 years with an option for 1 year. That works perfectly in Providing DeGroms some extra ammunition so we don’t waste his last prime years remaining with us.
I would make this move everyday and any day, but only tome will tell.

  14. Zozo,

You guys are missing the logic that is right in front of all of you. You just said it. Next year there will be a bunch of high quality shortstops that are free agents so why pay dearly for one this year when you have other holes that are more important to close?. Are any of them going to be cheap?.

Can anyone here question if the Mets could have gotten a different player with control while taking over all the money and giving up two major leaguers and two prospects?

The Mets were not supposed to try to win in one year because the needed players were not all available at this time. That meant that getting a world series potential team together would have taken two or three years and a combination of cheap upcoming players and veterans.

Now the Mets will have to pay at least 25M for Lindor going forward is they can sign him. How much will Conforto be worth? What about Syndergaard? What if Stroman pitches as expected? do you let him walk?

So lets play devils advocate here.

Lets say the Mets sign Springer for 5 years 125M.
Now they need to keep Lindor for another 25M per year.
Now they have to deal with Conforto who is a fan favorite. So lets say 20M per year.
Syndergaard, another fan favorite. Say another 20M.
What is Stroman wins at least 15 games, what is he worth? he is already making 18M+ so anywhere from 20 to 25M per year?
Lets not forget our resident steroids freak Cano.

So that's potentially 130M or more for those players without counting BP improvements.

Where are the cheap players coming up who will upset the high cost of the veterans?.

JD Davis? who knows what he will become.
    McNeil? yes.
Nimmo? he is a bench player / occasional starter just like JD.
Smith? doesn't have a place to start unless Alonso falls flat on his face.
Matz? he may be garbage and not cheap anymore.

So like I said, a mistake in the Kelenic stratosphere. That one costs the Mets their future CF and this one just gave up the potential cheap shortstop of the future along with other prospects.

One last point if I may. Teams like the Indians keep their teams competitive on a yearly basis by trading veterans while receiving prospects who later become stars for them. Do you really think they didn't do their homework? Really?.

  15. For those that aren’t thinking this way, it’s basically Rosario and Gimenez for Lindor and Carracci. You save a draft pick by not signing Springer, if he leaves, you get a draft pick for Lindor. Still, it’s a fleecing. If you hadn’t realized it before, when Sandy Anderson is showing appreciation for the Cleveland organization, you know he robbed them. When was the last time a GM ever thanked the other team when making a trade? LOL, might as well send flowers too.

  16. Nimmo is a bench player? Wow.

  17. I agree with Viper. I wrote this on Macks last post.

"I'm going to buck the trend. I don't hate the trade but I don't love it as much as everyone else. They could have gotten a similar value SP for the same money on the open market. So they basically swapped out Gimenez making the league minimum who plays elite defense & baserunning for an All-Star SS making $20m with similar skills but a much better bat while also giving up 2 prospects (I don't care about the Rosario give I don't think he had a ton of value). The obvious problem is Lindor is a FA next year. Now they are less likely to be in on Springer & other options because they burned 20m on a position they had covered by a dynamic home grown prospect. Now if the Mets still sign Springer & another solid bullpen arm then I'll be happy because that indicates a win now scenario that they basically cose over more long term success by dealing several cost controlled assets for 1 year of Lindor (again I they could have gotten a Carasco level player on the open market for similar $$)."

  18. Another question for you all. Can the Mets send a guy like Familia, plus the full money for his contract for a prospect and does that clear the salary from their tax calculation despite still paying for him?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Viper I understand what your saying, but I don’t feel that Giminez is that good? I may be wrong but only time will tell.
We both agree that Rosario had no future here.

The prospects that we gave up may be good, but if Lindor doesn’t sign an extension then we get a 2nd rd draft pick for him and that makes up for one of the 2 guys we lost. Also I think we get a fifth round pick as well, but I’m not too sure on that one?

What we were originally hearing and I was assuming is that they wouldn’t be able to get Lindor without including 2 of Mauricio, Alvarez, Baty or Allen. So giving up the 2 we did is a home run in my book. So I wouldn’t of made the trade and preferred to pick up one of the SS in next years free agency without giving up anything but this deal was too good to pass on.

Now getting Carrasco at around $12 million a year is a very good as well. I believe he is better than Odorizzi and anyone else not named Bauer on the free agent market. Last year he had 82 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched. At that rate I would believe he is roughly worth $20 million per year and we get to save $8 million towards another player. Also he gives our rotation an extra body for the next 3 years. Synndergard and Stroman may leave after the year. So I love the fact of having DeGrom and Carrasco being our 1 & 2 going forward.

Only time will tell if this turns out be the Gary Carter trade where we lost one of my favorites Hubie Brooks And Floyd Youmans, or Baerga trade where we lost jeff Kent and Viscaino.

I think they sign him long term, but one even worse scenario would be if the Skanks sign him next year in free agency. Bite my toungue.
