Closer Brad Hand and the Washington Nationals are in agreement on a one-year, $10.5 million contract, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN.

Hand winds up with more than his option and will be the Nationals’ new closer.

The Hand loss is not on Sandy.
The Mets DID offer Hand a TWO YEAR DEAL.
He turned it down because the Mets would not guarantee he would be the closer.
Back to bed.
Brad Hand lives in West Palm Beach where the Nats train. From their perspective, he erased the issue of a lack of lefties in pen. Luis Avilan was their one experienced lefty reliever.

Talking to folks who know Brad Hand, he wanted to play in DC and wanted chance to close. This wasn’t so much about Mets getting outbid or beat. They just weren’t able to offer those two factors.

Mets may consider lefty Justin Wilson now. Wilson spent the last two years in Queens, and they like him. For now Mets are righty heavy in pen.

Mets pretty fortunate to find an unemployed GM in Eppler. O’Dowd also available, but doesn’t get much love. Why is Eppler tutoring Tim Scott? Is Scott the next GM? What happened to Billy Owens?
ReplyDeleteDon’t really mind losing out on Hand or Springer, but I’d like to prefer to miss on Bauer and use his money to sign Syndergaard and Stroman long term.
For everyone who says that the Mets can’t trade Alonso, his .235 second half 2019 and his .231 in 2020 show a problem. He says that he wants to be a complete hitter but...Looks like a #5 or even #6 hitter to me. That has value too, but with shaky defense I would see what teams are offering.
Agreed Gus on all of the above. Today on MLB Network radio Steve Phillips was suggesting trading JD and Dom for Sonny Gray and Suarez.
ReplyDeleteNo thank you. Dom should be the First Baseman going forward. A team can only have so many K prone all or nothing hitters in the lineup.
