More Weekly Draft News

Good morning.

 1-7-21 - CUBBIES CRIB -

Irving Carter, RHP, Calvary Christian

The willingness to lean into a starting pitcher at the high school level is not one team’s take lightly. The last time the Cubs selected a high school pitcher in the draft was 2005, in the third round. To say it is a thing that is almost non-existent. Notwithstanding, it has become clear the Cubs are moving in the direction of a rebuild leading us to Irving Carter at pick number 21.

Carter is currently a part of a rotation, which is one of the best in the country. Calvary Christian is a dominant program, having captured two state championships in the past three years. At the helm of those wins is Carter, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound right-handed pitcher.

Committed to Miami, it may not be easy to sway a guy like Carter, especially towards the end of the first round. If there is a team, however, who could do it, it would be the Cubs. Carter has a potent three-pitch mix working primarily from his fastball, which sits currently in the low-90s but has been seen to touch 94-95 mph.

Add in a biting slider and an above-average changeup, along with that windup and delivery, and you nearly have a prototype of Trevor Bauer. I’m joking, mostly. Carter has been known to display a “bulldog-like demeanor” in his starts leading me back to the Bauer comparison. Again, mostly kidding.

1-4-21 - Baseball News -

The first team All-Americans include Collegiate Baseball’s projected 2021 National Player Of The Year in RHP Kumar Rocker of Vanderbilt. The 6-foot-6, 255-pounder could easily be the first pick in the 2021 MLB Draft next June.

Last season, he posted a 2-1 record, 1.80 ERA and struck out 28 batters in only 15 innings before the COVID-19 pandemic halted play.

The year prior, Rocker struck out 114 batters with 21 walks over 22 games as a freshman. During a regional game against Duke, he struck out 19 batters and tossed Vanderbilt’s first no-hitter since 1971.

1-4-21 - lookout landing -

Chase Petty has all the tools necessary to become a horse at the top of a big league rotation. His stuff is electric and he’s got a big, strong, durable body that could hold up. Where he’ll need to focus is in commanding all three of his pitches for strikes, getting ahead of batters to induce weak contact.

Given the velo, his ability to spin a baseball, and his fundamental understanding of throwing his changeup, Petty figures to be a first round guy in July. If the command doesn’t improve, and he doesn’t show he can work a little deeper into appearances without losing it, there’s a chance he slides, but falling to pick 47 and Seattle seems unlikely. The Mariners will have to pull the trigger on Petty at pick no. 12 if they hope to have a chance at him.

1-4-21 - Joe @JoeDoyleMiLB

Miami (OH) may have a second big arm. Jon Brand is just 5-foot-9, but possesses an extremely low release. 93-95/t96 w/arm-side run and some ride (16-17" IVB). 1700-2800rpm 12-6 CB, fringy CH. A little effort. 48 Ks in 20 fall innings. Model darling arm.

RHP Thatcher Hurd definitely left an impression on Ian and I. His enthusiasm for the game is palpable. The UCLA commit is soaring up draft boards and now seems to be flirting with day-one consideration for the 2021 MLB Draft. Easy kid to root for

Joe and the draft crew have interviewed 43 different Top 100 MLB Draft prospects in the 2021 class. Thatcher Hurd ranks near the top. Really fun, insightful interview. He's a good one

1-3-21 - D1Baseball  @d1baseball

After slashing .339/.400/.571 and leading Michigan State in XBH (8) & RBIs (15), sweet-swinging Peter Ahn will transition from 1B to CF.

@Sparty_Ahn will once again be leaned on as a middle of the order run producer.

1-3-21 - bleed cubbie blue -

Ryan Hampe played at UIC in 2019, and switched to John Logan Community College in Cartersville, Illinois (near Carbondale) for 2020, where he carved. Now, Hampe moves to Illinois, and he is the guy in the draft league. Mr. Baseball One seems to be trying to quell criticism of the former Appalachian League apparatus by hiring amateur baseball people to run a chance for reserve types and bullpen arms to try to impress scouts. I guess it's better than them having no option to play anywhere.

1-2-21 - halo hangout -

Brady House, 3B

House ordinarily enough has drawn comparisons to Troy Glaus due to his raw power and build. He’s quite possibly the best case scenario for the Angels at 9. House doesn’t fit the bill that had the Angels interested in Jo Adell, and Jordyn Adams (lean built athletic prep bats able to play a premium position) but he’s got similarly high upside and has been the most well-known name in this draft outside of Kumar Rocker.

Scouts were hopeful House would be able to stay at short because of the plus arm, in spite of lacking feel for the spot, but the first time scouts got a clutter of live-looks on him he spent most of the week at 3B thanks to teammate and another possible first rounder, Ryan Spikes. House did spend time at SS though and he looked capable, though he’s still destined to play 3B, which is far from a negative as there’s upside in his abilities at the spot, mostly the arm.

With limited data, House isn’t as optimized as we once believed. He tends to swing down at balls, which produces high EV’s, but it’s with negative and single-digit LA’s. I’m not overly concerned about this though as House is sneaky athletic and implementing loft shouldn’t be an issue. His youth — combined with fictitious arm bend — are the cherry on top. House’s front leg stability (Trout like) is spearheaded by a violent back leg. Put all of it together and you’re looking at quite possibly the most pro-ready amateur hitter in the class.

House’s early summer concerns were overshadowed by his impressive showing at the WWBA, and he’s right back into the conversation for the top prep bat. House is a Tennessee commit.

Chula Vista, California SS Marcelo Mayer with some winter BP. Really saw his stock gain a ton of helium toward the end of the summer, especially after WWBA. Really impacting the ball, especially pull-side these last few months. Expect him to go very early in the 2021 MLB Draft
