College Baseball Daily -

Luis Aviles Tulane University (LA) West Boca Snappers C RS Junior (draft eligible 2021) 5’11/205 R/R Miami, FL Draft History: Undrafted

Aviles was a major part of the Tulane offense spring 2020 hitting .394 with 13 RBI’s, 4 doubles and 2 HR’s in 8 starts. Aviles was named the SFCBL’s Defensive Player of the Year during the 2018 season making only 1 error the entire season. Defensively, we project him to be an average to solid catcher at the MLB level with a quick release and solid footwork. Luis blocks the ball well and is quick laterally with a strong arm. At the plate Luis consistently barrels balls and showed off his power during the 2020 All-Star Game bp launching multiple balls over the scoreboard in left center. With his ability to hit, power and plus defensive tools we expect Luis to be a solid prospect in the 2021 MLB Draft.

Tulane Green Wave -

2020 (Junior): Started eight of Tulane’s 17 games on the season as a junior, coming as catcher and designated hitter… Was the only non-starter to finish the year with double-digit hits, batting .394 on the season with 13 base knocks which included four doubles and two home runs… Drove in 13 RBI, while scoring eight times, slugging .697 with a .432 on-base percentage… Produce four multi-hit games and four multi-RBI games which was second on the team… Ended the season on an eight-game hitting streak… Had a .970 fielding percentage behind the plate… Made season debut in game two against Middle Tennessee, producing two doubles with two RBI and two runs scored (2/29)… Connected for his first Tulane home run in game three against the Blue Raiders, on a three-run shot (3/1)… Drove in five on two hits, which included another home run, to go along with a pair of runs scored against Texas Southern (3/3)… Earned a season-high three hits, scoring once against Southern (3/7)… Had two more doubles and two RBI in the finale against the Jaguars (3/8).

Mack's spin -

My guess is Aviles will have a very decent minor league career, but his limited defensive skills will be exposed if and when he hits the Bigs. Think Tomas Nido.

Still, every team needs catchers. He will be picked on Day 2.
