UC Irvine RHP

Ht: 5-11 | Wt: 180 | B-T: R-R

Commit/Drafted: Red Sox '17 (26)

Age At Draft: 21.6

A steady righthander over three seasons with UC Irvine, Denholm ranked as the No. 97 prospect in the 2020 draft class thanks to a solid mix of four pitches and a long track record of collegiate success as a starter. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound righthander went undrafted, however, and will be back in the mix in 2021. Denholm dealt with some elbow inflammation last spring, but when he’s healthy has an 89-93 mph fastball, a plus changeup and an average slider. He’ll also occasionally flip in a curveball to keep batter’s guessing, but it’s his competitiveness and feel for filling the zone with four different pitches that have led to his success. There’s limited upside here considering Denholm’s size and stuff, but there’s a lot to be said for his career 2.96 ERA over 197.2 innings with UC Irvine and almost 30 innings over two summers in the Cape without allowing a run.

Starting Pitcher - Trenton Denholm, UC Irvine

Pitching nearly 200 innings over the course of the last three seasons, there might not be a pitcher on this list who has accomplished more and is as reliable as Denholm. He put forth a sparkling line in 2019 with a 1.81 ERA over close to 100 innings that included four complete games. Denholm won’t blow you away with his stuff or size but what he does well is absolutely pound the strike zone and attack with his low- to mid-90s fastballs. Denholm also has a breaking ball that’s made enormous strides during his time in Irvine while the changeup is his best secondary pitch that avoids barrels very well. His ability to pitch is matched by very few nationwide and he’s looking for a big year in his fourth year in college baseball.

Denholm is a 5-foot-11, 190-pound right-handed pitcher who is one of the best strike throwers in the country. He doesn’t have eye-popping stuff but is extremely effective on the mound. He throws a four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, changeup, curveball and slider.

When he throws a fastball, he typically relies on his four-seamer, throwing it about 70 percent of the time compared to his two-seamer. He has a lot of confidence in his fastballs, which sit in the low-90s, and shows a strong ability to locate them in the strike zone. He uses his fastballs to attack hitters early in the counts in hopes of generating quick outs.

His changeup is an above-average offering. The pitch keeps hitters off-balanced as he locates it well and has the confidence to throw it in any count. Denholm’s curveball can be an effective pitch at times but is something he’s trying to develop more consistency with.
