Tom Brennan: Mets’ Fantasy List (Current Player) Top Dawgs

Who are your Top Dawgs?

A website named "Imaginary Brick Wall" recently published two very interesting fantasy baseball lists.

One was their top 180 fantasy MLB players.

I would have expected these Mets to be on the list:

deGrom, Alonso, Conforto, McNeil, Smith, and perhaps Nimmo, Stroman and Diaz.

Well, the actual list is six: deGrom, Alonso, Conforto, Syndergaard, Gimenez, and Smith.  No McNeil, no Nimmo, no Stroman, no Diaz.

180 top players spread over 30 teams equals 6, and the Mets have their 6 above. But an average team with 6 guys should average out to a 90 ranking, half way between the top and the bottom.  The Brick Wall folks average Mets ratings for the listed Mets 6 was 101, so that is not very good.

Anyway, their ranked Mets are summarized as follows, including 2021 projections:

16) Jacob deGrom 2021 Projection: 14 wins/2.81/0.98/267 in 199 IP (boy, would I love to see him win more than 14)

47) Pete Alonso  2021 Projection: 88 runs/ 40 HR/ 103 RBI/ .249/.342/.531

93) Michael Conforto 2021 Projection:  89/28/91/.270/.370/.490

113) Noah Syndergaard (their assumption: Thor will likely miss half the season). 2021 Projection: 4 wins/3.83/1.26/85 in 80 IP

169) Andres Gimenez  2021 Projection: 75 R/12 HR/55 RBI, .259/.324/.391/22 SB

170) Dominic Smith 2021 Projection: 76/24/84/.266/.330/.471

I strongly disagree with Dom Smith being at # 170 and hitting just .266, but all other projections feel reasonable to me.

Also, when I first saw Alonso at # 47, I thought, wow, that's pretty low.  But when you consider this list spans 30 teams, he essentially rates as your average 2nd best player on your average team, since a# 2 player on a given team should fall between 31-60 normally.  Which then makes it a reasonable ranking.

Other rankings of interest to Mets fans?  Well, Ronald Acuna is # 1, and Juan Soto is # 2, and that is troubling, given that both are in the Mets' division.

Possible Mets' acquisitions going into this off season that are on the list?

Lindor? # 12.  Arenado? # 35.  Bauer? # 37.  Springer? # 41.  Kelenic? # 53.  Realmuto? # 81. LeMahieu? # 88.  Hader? # 158.

No McCann.  Realmuto kind of surprisingly low.

I'd say if the Mets truly want to compete, they could use a # 37 and a # 41.

Besides the above, they also had a list of top 50 2020/21 First Year Player Draft Rankings.

Favorably for the Mets, they had Pete Crow Armstrong at # 7 and Isaiah Greene at # 30.  That is impressive to me, compared to where they were actually drafted.

Here are the Imaginary Brick Wall links.  Give them a look.

So, now I ask you, whom I rank as the Mets' # 1 fans:

What do you think?

P.S. Yesterday's "events" at the Capitol for some reason brought me back to the 1970s at Shea Stadium.  I went to a game then, and where the right field portion of the stadium ended and the fencing began, lots of outside fans who wanted inside for free looked both ways, saw no cops, and scaled the fence, then the wall, and they were in the stadium, without ticket.  I hope they at least bought some peanuts.

  1. Are Oswalt and Kilome able to pitch for Syracuse this year? I think they are both out of options.

  2. Raw, off hand, I am not sure. But if either of them don't make the team outright in 2021, they're likely to have cemented their reputation as marginal talents. I definitely want better than Oswalt (career 6.19 ERA) in 2021, and probably (from what I saw of him) Kilome as well, although for him there could have been some rust post-TJS. He just didn't impress me.

  3. Amazing Mets just updated their Mets prospects and they have Kilome as their number 10 prospect.

The Mets have 4 catchers on their 40 man roster. Do you think they will keep that way heading into the season. If not they have to DFA one or both.
