Mack's Mock Pick 1.18 - OF - Sal Frelick

Sal Frelick

OF      5-9      175     Boston College

 Mack's spin -

I'm not a big fan of five foot nine outfielders, so, on my team, Frelick would play second.

Still, he has held his own in the outfield.

His bat came alive this summer which propelled him into first round status.

Second base ranks for the 2021 season. A lot of these guys have versatility or project to move to 2B as professionals. The Boston College tandem of Sal Frelick and Cody Morissette lead the way, though Max Ferguson and Tyler Black are very good players. Dayton Dooney is a sleeper

16. Sal Frelick, OF/2B, Boston College

Frelick may share initials, height-weight dimensions, and an over-caffeinated playing style with Phillies GM Sam Fuld, but his ceiling is higher than fifth outfielder. Frelick has the speed and the instincts to become an above-average center fielder at the pro level (presuming a team doesn't try to keep him at second base, a position scouts expect to see him play more frequently this spring). Those wheels allow him to beat out bunts and infield hits, putting pressure on the defense. He's proven to be an efficient thief (25 for 28 on steals at Boston College) as well, and he even has some sneaky juice in his bat, though he's unlikely to ever be a big-time power threat.

Areas To Improve: Play plus CF defense, show a looser swing

Frelick has the toolset to play center field and shine there, but most of his playing time at Boston College has been in right field. As a dynamic athlete and plus-plus runner he should find success in the outfield, but teams will want him to prove his defense. It’s much tougher to profile as a corner outfielder at the next level with a 5-foot-9, 175 pound frame. Additionally, Frelick has shown great bat speed and hitterish qualities, but he can get barred and shouldery at times and could benefit from being a bit looser in his swing this spring.

Chicago White Sox

Sal Frelick

2B/OF, Boston College

The top bat in the New England based Futures League this summer, Frelick showed his ability to move back and forth between the infield and the outfield. Frelick also dominated in the box, overwhelming the circuit at the plate. The Boston College Eagle is an undersized lefty bat, with impressive bat speed, a polished approach, and the ability to punish mistakes. He's also comfortably a double-plus runner who figures to wreak havoc on the basepaths during his pro career. While Frelick may never be an offensive superstar, he should be a valuable and versatile player capable of impacting the game in a variety of ways. The White Sox add a player capable of fitting into a variety of roles while complimenting the back half of their current timeline. In a way, Frelick is Adam Eaton all over again, with the versatility to play some infield too.

Boston College OF

Ht: 5-9 | Wt: 175 | B-T: L-R

Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted

Age At Draft: 21.2

Frelick was a standout, three-sport athlete in high school and lettered 12 times in baseball, football and hockey for Lexington (Mass.) High. A dynamic, plus athlete, Frelick plays the game with plenty of energy and has the toolset to impact the game on both sides of the ball. Frelick has a simple bat path geared for line drives up the middle and into the gaps, with most of his power to the pull side. He does get a bit barred at times and has a tendency to use too much shoulder in the swing and roll over on pitches. A plus-plus runner, Frelick has played mostly right field for Boston College but has all of the speed and defensive acumen to be a center fielder at the next level and long term. That speed plays on the bases as well and Frelick stole 18 bags in 21 tries (85.7%) as a freshman, while hitting .367/.447/.513 with more walks (22) than strikeouts (16). While Frelick is listed at just 5-foot-9, 175 pounds, scouts believe he has above-average power in the tank thanks to his twitchy hands and strength. With a chance to be a dynamic top-of-the-order catalyst with plenty of extra-base pop, speed and defensive ability in center, Frelick is a Day one caliber prospect and at the top of a strong Northeast region in 2021.

23. Cleveland Indians: Sal Frelick, OF, Boston College

Frelick profiles as a top-of-the-order hitter due to his strong plate disciple and ability to hit for average and power. He also is athletic and possesses solid speed, which he uses to impact the game on the base pads and defensively in the outfield. Frelick has unique versatility on defense with experience playing second base, shortstop, third base and in the outfield throughout his time in college.

Chicago Cubs

In the past four drafts, the Cubs have either taken a high floor college pitcher or a high ceiling shortstop. This year could represent a departure from the trend as they are in a prime spot to grab a college outfielder. Sal Frelick may not be as sexy a name as Jud Fabian or Colton Cowser, and he may not have their power, but for what he lacks in the power department, he makes up for in the contact and speed department. Frelick is also an athlete, having played hockey and basketball in high school. Though he is a bit of a defensive work in progress, he’s played around the diamond, and could provide value as a pro utility player at worst. Frelick will play corner outfielder in the spring, and depending on how he fares, could justify a team drafting him as a pure outfielder.

25. Oakland Athletics: Sal Frelick, OF, Boston College

Frelick is an undersized, but very athletic outfielder from Boston College. The 5-foot-9, 175-pounder shows plus bat speed and could get to average power in the future. He hits from the left side and should stay in center field.

25. Oakland Athletics | Sal Frelick, OF, Boston College | (2/54) Thatcher Hurd, RHP, Mira Costa HS, Cali.

In selecting Frelick, Oakland gets back to the small market thinking of taking the best available player that fits their high analytical front office. What you get with Frelick is a premium defender with plus speed and the ability to stick in centerfield. At the plate, he is a disciplined hitter with a propensity to find the barrel and a pretty high floor long term. With a full transition to pitching long term, Hurd burst onto the draft scene this summer by performing at the PG National Showcase. Blessed with a highly projectable frame and present athleticism, Hurd produces some of the easier velocity we saw in 2020. The fastball has been into the low-90s thus far with more expected as he fully takes to pitching full-time. Although there is some things that need to be refined, including the secondary offerings, there is near limitless potential with the young California native. -John McAdams

Sakowski’s Take: Frelick represents one of the PG scouting department’s favorite players in the class with a good mix of ceiling and floor, looking more and more like an everyday big leaguer with every evaluation. Hurd came on like gangbusters during the summer circuit with high-level spin data and projection, and the stuff is plenty good at present as well. This would be a really nice pairing of safety and risk, floor and ceiling.

14.  OF Sal Frelick

School: Boston College | B / T: L / R | Ht: 5’9 | Wt: 175lbs | Age: 21.2

A spark plug, top of the order bat with good hitability, pitch recognition and plate discipline. A very impressive 22:33 K:BB Ratio with just a 14% SwStr% in 208 AB in his Boston College career. Shows an ability to handle the high fastball with ease. Showing off a (55) Hit Tool with very strong hitability to all fields. And a chance to see 9-13 HR per season with some sneaky pop in his bat.

Defensively, Frelick is a Plus (60) Defender at all 3 OF positions, fitting in best in CF to utilize his impressive (70) Speed and run down balls in the gaps others simply cannot. With a league-average (50) Arm. Frelick reminds a bit of a Brett Gardner type OF that should carve out a lengthy big league career due to his ability to impact the game in a number of ways.

11-11-20 - away back gone -

Sal Frelick had a monster freshman season at Boston College in 2019 as he slashed .367/.447/.513 with four home runs and 32 RBI’s and added 18 stolen bases. He also drew more walks (22) than strikeouts (16), which is a rare feat in today’s home run or strikeout era of baseball.

The tremendous season earned him earned All-ACC Second Team and ACC All-Freshman Team honors.

His numbers took a slight dip in 2020 as he slashed just .241/.380/.414 with two homers and four RBI’s before the season was shut down, but the struggles were in large part due to a meniscus injury.

Bio:

Height: 5-10

Weight: 175 lbs

Hits/Throws: L-R

Hometown: Lexington, MA

School: Boston College

Standout freshman in the Eagles outfield, Frelick possesses plus bat speed, plus speed, and the ability to cover ground in centerfield. Disciplined hitter with a short left handed stroke with a knack for the barrel. Currently lacks much in-game power thanks to stride and load changes. Archetype is still being established. Regardless, he's a true centerfield prospect and the hit tool exists. It's a pretty high floor despite some impact questions surrounding the bat. One of the top outfielders in college baseball.
