Mack's Mock Pick 1.21 - SS - Izacc Pacheco

Izacc Pacheco

Mack's spin -

The team that picks Pacheco is banking on his raw talent plus advanced pop for his age. There is a lot of work to be done here but he could develop into one of the stars of this game.

I have him eventually moving to third base,

39. Izaac Pacheco, SS, Friendswood HS (TX)

Pacheco offers some real thump from the left side of the plate. He also offers some real swing-and-miss that has some scouts concerned about his ability to hit for average. On defense, he seems probable to outgrow shortstop as he matures, likely leading to a shift over to the hot corner. He has a commitment to Texas A&M.

Areas To Improve: Contact ability, hit with impact to opposite field

Pacheco has a sweet lefthanded swing with plenty of power projection based on his strength now and future physical projection, but needs to show better barrel ability. Scouts thought his swing could get a bit leveraged and grooved at times last summer, and he also showed a tendency to get too pull-heavy in his approach. His power potential is tantalizing and he has a chance to be an athletic defender at third base, but he’ll need to show more out of his pure hit tool in Texas.

Commit/Drafted: Texas A&M

Age At Draft: 18.7

If picturesque swings and muscular, projectable bodies are your thing, Pacheco might be your guy in the 2021 prep class. A 6-foot-3, 210-pound shortstop committed to Texas A&M, Pacheco is a power-oriented lefthanded hitter with a fluid swing and quick hands in the box. Pacheco has a fluid and quick lefthanded swing that is geared for power now, and he projects for at least plus juice in the future with present strength and bat speed, and more room to fill out. While scouts have praised an advanced approach at the plate, Pacheco does come with some swing-and-miss concerns and he has had trouble tapping into his power in game situations throughout the summer. Like many of the top shortstops in the 2021 class, Pacheco is fine at the position now, but most scouts believe he will shift over to third in the future. He has solid hands and more than enough arm strength for either position, but scouts believe as he fills out he won’t have the range and quickness for shortstop, making him a solid fit at the hot corner.

Toronto Blue Jays

A year after bottoming out and lucking into Austin Martin, the Blue Jays could find themselves taking advantage of a class flush with prep infielders, nabbing a power hitting corner infield type. Izaac Pacheco is not as well regarded as well as Brady House, but he probably has the best or second best prep power. Pacheco is an above average fielder, but a below average runner which has already cemented his pro position at the hot corner. Still, Pacheco has tremendous physicality and greater value as a lefthanded bat. What determines his standing in the first round is plate adjustments. Like House, he sold out for power too much and ended up striking out more than usual. If he can shorten his swing, he could justify his first round value.

21. Chicago Cubs: Izaac Pacheco, 3B, Friendswood HS (TX)

Pacheco is a 6-foot-4, 220-pound slugger who has experience playing shortstop. He likely shifts to third base where his plus-plus power potential will play. The infielder has some issues with his approach and he could be a high strikeout player. He also has the chance to be a plus defender at the hot corner. Back-to-back preps in the first round for scouting director Dan Kantrovitz.

20. New York Yankees | Tommy Mace, RHP, Florida | (2/49) Izaac Pacheco, SS, Friendswood HS

Mace will bring a projectable starters arsenal to the organization with a fastball that he has shown great command of in the 91-94 mph range with the ability to bump it up to 96 mph. He has also flashed the makings of a plus slider with his second offering in the upper-80s with real swing and miss bite to both righties and lefties. Pacheco, listed as a shortstop, projects more as a corner guy down the line. His middle of the order profile from the left side should allow him to play either corner while his defensive ability will certainly give him a chance at third. -Colt Olinger

Cervino's Take: This would make it three years in a row for the Yankees in taking a college prospect and they’ll grab projected-2019-pick Tommy Mace along with prep shortstop Izaac Pacheco. Mace returns to lead a talented Florida squad on Fridays and is one of many impressive college arms this year while Pacheco showed some of the best power on the high school side. Giving the Yankees a likely-corner power bat and a rotation starter is a strong way to kick off a draft.

Izaac Pacheco has premium bat speed + an advanced approach at the plate. He's the top name in an Aggie Baseball 2021 recruiting class that ranks No. 11 in the country

62. Izaac Pacheco - SS

Bio:

Height: 6-4

Weight: 220 lbs

Hits/Throws: L-R

Hometown: Friendswood, TX

School: Friendswood

Pacheco has been one of the more famous names in the class for a few years, and had a respectable showing at the Perfect Game All American Classic. He is almost assuredly not a shortstop at the next level, and played there a bit in the game which wasn't too pretty. He'll likely settle in as a corner guy, mixing between third and first. Pacheco is known for his bat, and it's a pretty interesting set up. He has a steep VBA; has adjustable actions, but he struggles to produce the bat speed most guys with his archetype do due to a lack of feel for creating a stretch in his obliques (lack of hip/torso separation) at foot plant. Pacheco is still able to impact the ball in a power manner however, likely due to elite hand speed. Otimizing his power output is of the utmost importance to his draft stock given where he will probably be playing defensively.

Next On Deck -

22. Izaac Pacheco, 3B, Friendswood (HS)

6-foot-4, 220 pounds. Strong, physical presence each time he enters the batter’s box. Powerful left-handed swing made to elevate the baseball. Bat travels on an uphill plane. Hit tool and breaking ball recognition is a concern. Too big to play shortstop; will eventually move over to third base. The top prep player in Texas for this class.

PG -

Izaac Pacheco is a 2021 SS/RHP with a 6-4 220 lb. frame from Friendswood, TX who attends Friendswood. Outstanding athletic build, has really improved his physique since last seen. 6.96 runner in the sixty. Third base build and likely future but looked very athletic and mobile at shortstop defensively, light on his feet for his size and rounds the ball well with good footwork, gets on top of his throws with very good carry. Left handed hitter, hits from a slightly open stance, easy tension free swing with some uphill swing plane, gets plus carry off the barrel when he squares it up, can get mistimed occasionally but has huge offensive upside.

MLB -

Izaac Pacheco, 3B, Friendswood HS (Texas) -- The Texas A&M recruit who comes in at No. 6 on our Top 15 had a couple of hits on Sunday, showing better contact skills to offset some of the swing-and-miss concerns that have cropped up. He has tremendous raw left-handed power and will almost certainly move to third at the next level.

Prospect Worldwide -

Izaac Pacheco – 3B: If you like Left-Handed Power look no further then, Izaac Pacheco. Possessing legitimate (70) Grade Raw Power. But the story doesn’t end there for Pacheco. He grades as a potential Plus (60) fielder at 3B. And legitimately has SS tools to stick if he weren’t 6’4 220lbs, likely forcing him off the position. He runs well for an athlete his size and is athletic enough to handle an OF position, likely RF with his strong arm and overall athleticism should be a seamless transition if ever needed. With any improved showing with the hit tool and ability to pick up spin over the next few months, we could see Pacheco climb into 1st Round consideration.

Pitcher List -

8. Izaac Pacheco, SS/3B, Friendswood High School (Texas)

Izaac Pacheco hits left, hits often, and hits loud. The truth is it doesn’t matter where he plays in the field because the potential in his bat is up there with the top prospects in the draft. He has huge power potential. He hit six homers in just 29 at-bats in 2020. There is also above-average speed here but that might be negated if he grows more — he’s already 6’4 and 200 pounds. His size will likely also decide where he plays in the field, likely eliminating his future at shortstop.
