ReplyDeleteNimmo a leadoff HR.
ReplyDeleteCouple of thoughts:
ReplyDelete1) Boy, ESPN is hard to watch. Why televise the game if you believe that viewers have no interest in the game? Just awful.
2) First outings for a lot of guys. So nothing matters or defines. That said: Familia looked bad, battling himself. Betances looked very bad -- no pop, no crispness. Possibly nothing in the tank. And Gsellman looked exactly like himself. They were all hard to watch. If that persists, the bullpen will be, as suspected, this team's soft underbelly. Any three of those guys could be gone by the end of May.
3) I don't think Pete is a cleanup hitter. I like him in 6-spot. But hitting the ball over the wall is the best thing a hitter can do. He's dangerous. Good to see him go up the middle/oppo on that HR.
4) Oh! Did you hear how the ESPN guys pretty much outright called him fat last season. That's what I thought, too.
5) What's up with Diaz? He was originally listed to pitch on Tuesday, got pulled. Didn't pitch today. Is he hurt? Mets are in radio silence and there's little real reporting these days. I hope it's nothing.

Jimmy,
ReplyDeleteFamilia and Betances were very hard to watch indeed. Anthony DiComo tweeted that Betances was throwing better than last year so maybe there is hope.
They didn't have a gun, oddly.
ReplyDeleteMy visual, confirmed with a friend I texted with, was that there was nothing on the fastball. So everyone is left to try to figure how to succeed with inferior stuff. He used to be such an intimidating figure out there. It's like that guy has disappeared. Maybe he can loosen up and find more LIFE in that arm. Right now, I'm not seeing it.
When May came on in the next inning, you could see that he had a Major League fastball. The contrast was visible.
I'm a little annoyed at myself for not saying that Familia looked familiar, the same guy who couldn't finish hitters last season, prolonged ABs, two walks.
It's early. But these are the guys who came into season with red flags.
Jimmy
Familia looked familiar. Good one.
ReplyDeleteAgree the pen and defense will be big problems in addition to base running and manufacturing runs.
It is early - but one cannot be at all pleased with Betances' outing. Hopefully, he adds 3-4 MPH to the fastball as spring rolls on. Hopefully, he has not turned into Matt Harvey - a shell of his former self.
ReplyDeleteFunny that the other pitchers toss 8 scoreless, Betances goes 1 innings and allows 4 runs - and he gets the win. Only in baseball.
If Dellin can't cut it, Foley and or Tarpley would be happy to come north in his place.
I am amazed that the Mets are trotting Pete Crow A out there so much. He may be a bit overmatched right now, but what an awesome opportunity to get a taste of what he's got to achieve to get to the bigs. Not a single pro at bat before spring training.
Baty and Mauricio showing some signs. Nice.
Ferguson is doing what he needs to do - come storming out of the gate.
