4 reasons why Mets should strongly pursue an extension with Noah Syndergaard.
According to Danny Abriano these are: “The Mets have the need and the salary
cap flexibility; Syndergaard
is somehow underrated; The free agent pitching class after 2021 leaves a lot to
be desired; In-house top of the rotation help is not close.”

Alternate, developmental sites to return for MLB teams in 2021, as Triple-A
season gets delayed by at least one month, league says. “While Triple-A,
the highest level of minor league baseball, was scheduled to begin April 6,
games will be pushed back, sources said, to around the same time as Double-A
and Class A are expected to start -- the first week of May. Some executives told ESPN they believe the
alternate sites could last longer into the season. The reason for rekindling
sites -- which serve as training facilities for players who are likeliest to be
called up to the major leagues -- is the proximity to teams' home stadiums and
easier oversight of testing and coronavirus protocols, according to sources.”
MLB Trade Rumors listed all the MLB 40 Man roster players that are out of options. For the Mets these are Miguel Castro, Jacob Barnes and Tomas Nido.
NY
Post: Yoenis Cespedes showcase leaves teams as tempted as ever. “Yes, on
the same day the Mets enjoyed a home crowd of paying fans for the first time in
nearly a year, their former fan favorite displayed his still-formidable talent
some 12 miles away for scouts from 11 teams, including the Yankees, at the Bob
Gladwin Baseball Complex. With free agency mostly finished, the 35-year-old
represents a compelling lottery ticket for a club in need of a bat.”

Also at Mack's Mets:
Hunter Greene has elite heat indeed, if he is clocking 103 on Mar 2.
ReplyDeleteAlbert Almora not only homered, he hit a flyout over 400 feet to center. HMM.
McNeil was a skinny kid when he was drafted. Not anymore.
Szapucki - Mets want to stretch him into a starter sounds like AAA to me. We'll see.
Time for the rest of the Mets to start hitting like Jeff and Albert.
Tom,
ReplyDeleteOne of the points that GKR brought up yesterday was how Almora has seen his ground ball outs increase each of the last few years so he is trying to hit the ball more in the air this year. Hopefully it works for him and he doesn't turn into a "Willie Mays Hayes".
I disagree with Evan and Chris on Syndergaard, I’d sign him to any four year deal it takes, maybe five. If Thor wants six, I say we need to consider it. But, 4/$22 is a done deal to me. I’m wondering why Alderson never mentioned Stroman in the extensions... Stroman not pitching last year will keep his innings lower and his market lower, but he may pull in a four year deal at around $20 per year. But, if you can only do one, is it Stroman or is it Syndergaard?
ReplyDeleteThat is a very tough question Gus. Me? I would have kept Gimenez and extended Stroman, Noah and Conforto. Since that is no longer an option, I like rewarding the guys that have been here the longest so that would mean extending Conforto, Thor, Stroman, and Lindor in that order.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they extend Stroman AND Thor - to be strategic, he may want to do that and bust the cap. A lot will tell whether Matt Allan looks like the next Matt Harvey and Szapucki looks like the next Koosman. Time will tell.
ReplyDeleteI will say this - that new Stroman split change was NASTY. He may be ready to do big things this year.
Szapucki has had a limited amout of AA time.
ReplyDeleteSome call for him to go back and pitch there this spring.
I say no. His advanced age means he needs to be tested now at AAA to see if he still could be a rotation piece.
