Harper SNY.TV: Top moments in Mets Opening Day history. #7) Johan Santana’s Debut…After their
historic September collapse in 2007 the Mets were hoping that acquiring Santana
from the Minnesota Twins in a blockbuster trade would be the boost they needed
to get back to the postseason...The two-time Cy Young winner pitched seven
strong innings and David Wright, in what would be a spectacular 33-home run,
124-RBI season, had a pair of doubles and three RBI to lead the Mets to an easy
win.

ESPN.com: Tom Glavine got off to a great start -- for all of one pitch. Glavine opened the season with a called strike, then completely fell apart. Booed off the mound in the fourth inning, the Mets' prized newcomer was long gone by the time Corey Patterson finished with two home runs and seven RBIs Monday in the Chicago Cubs' 15-2 romp over the embarrassed New Yorkers.
Alamy.com: Glavine lasted only three and two-thirds innings while allowing the Cubs eight hits and five runs in his Mets debut.
National Pastime.com: At Shea Stadium, the Mets Opening Day lineup includes the first regular starting double-play combination in major league history featuring natives from Puerto Rico. Second baseman Roberto Alomar and shortstop Rey Sanchez combine to make two twin killings as the Cubs drub New York, 15-2.

National Pastime.com: In the longest scoreless opener in National League history, pinch-hitter Alberto Castillo's single with two outs and the bases loaded gives the Mets a 1-0, 14-inning victory over the Phillies. The most extended Opening Day game in major league history occurred in 1926 when the Senators blanked the Philadelphia A's in 15 innings, 1-0.
Thisdayinbaseball.com: The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies tie the National League mark for the longest Opening Day game, with New York coming out on top with a 1 – 0 victory in 14 innings on pinch-hitter Alberto Castillo’s single.
Mets Wiki:
Bobby
Jones and Philadelphia’s Curt
Schilling pitched extremely well in their Opening Day assignments. Jones
allowed only four singles and two walks to the Phils in six shutout innings
while Schilling pitched two-hit scoreless ball and struck out nine Mets batters
in eight innings. Greg
McMichael and Dennis Cook
pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the Mets and Jerry
Spradlin gave the Phillies a perfect ninth inning to send the game onward.

Do their stats equal their salaries.
ReplyDeleteIt seems amazing to me sometimes. I look at the new player signings, the amounts, and then I look at their stats and go, "What the heck. Am I missing something here?" But to be truthful, this is pro sports today and it is simply because that there is so much money out there to be made by the teams.
Carlos Carrasco - Look at his career stats. What am I missing here?
Michael Conforto - Look at what he will probably be asking for next contract. Sure, he hits a decent share of homeruns, but at a .259 career BA? Would not an outfield featuring Dominic Smith, Brandon Nimmo, and either McNeil, Almora, or Pillar be just as good? The Armstrong the year after should be in this mix too.
2021
ReplyDeleteTo me, it's all about getting off to the very best start that the NY Mets can. The division is competitive and the Mets should dominate in the second half, after all the walking wounded have returned, especially the two starters.
The Mets are really, really deep off the bench now, and their bullpen is right there as well. There will be "step-up relievers" coming into game from the pen. Castro being one.
I actually think that the Mets will fare well even in the first half, with guys like Walker, Lucchesi, Stroman, and Peterson carry their part of the workload. And Jake is automatic, probably the very best pitcher in the NL.
I am ready for 2012 to begin now.
