  1. Loooo....weeesss! 22 pitches, 6 at 100 MPH, and comes out on top. Just one AB, but pretty informative.

Peterson would be well served, if and when he starts, to have Lindor and Luis snagging his grounders and liners.

Crow got in the game as a defensive replacement. Nice.

Mazeika gets a hit. Nido ankle suddenly felt much better. Job on the line. Mazeika wants it.

  2. Tom. Caleb Joseph has also been getting significant time in Nido's absence. If they go defense first for a backup, Joseph may get the job.

  3. Caleb's bat has gone into the toilet the past 3 seasons, and he is about to turn 35. I'd look at him more as a 3rd or 4th string call up. I'd rather have Nido.

I just wonder if Mazeika at this point is better than both. I think Nido has that one key advantage to start the season: no options left.

It is way too early to draw any conclusions, but Nido's 1 for 6 and 3 Ks so far tells me one thing: for all the talk of hititng change, he is a bad hitter until demonstrably proven otherwise.

His caught stealing numbers are horrible, but that is in part due to Matz and Thor being horrible in that regard. But I still like that lefty Mazeika bat to use when McCann might otherwise face a very tough righty like Scherzer. In a small sample, Mazeika's career spring stats are promising: .263/.341/.448 with just 8 Ks in about 45 PAs. I like that 8 K part. Nido seems to be far more prone to striking out.

  4. Maybe so - and I have not seen Nido catch, really, but I am impressed by CS rate in the low 30's in 2019. His PBs were kind of high, but that was very possibly due to Mickey Jannis' knuckleball. I just like his youth (vs. Joseph) and his contact bat.

Everyone wonders if Nido's reworked swing will improve his hitting. Maybe. But his total spring training and MLB plate appearances (367) have resulted in a very high K total (101). When you strike out, you hit .000.

Joseph about 1 every 4 times up - not quite as bad.

I think Mazeika would fan less than either of them.

  5. Tom,

I like Mazeika a lot as well. In a perfect world, he'd be my 3rd catcher and lefty off the bench. He can also play first.

I love Don Smith and Pete Alonso as well. But they are both 1st basemen and wouldn't the team make more sense trading once for a CF? Everytime I see highlights of Buddy Reed for the A's, I am surprised the A's didn't trade Laureano for a need.

Would you trade Mauricio for Laureano or maybe make it abigger package and get Chapman and Laureano? IUf the A's are out of it come July there still could be possibilities. (FYI, I'd hold on to Mauricio.)

  6. Impressive at bat by The Galloping Guillorme. (Apologies to Graham Kerr.)
    :)

  7. Thanks for the link, John. I proposed a potential trade involving Alonso. It didn't go over well. LOL

  8. John, I just don't see the Mets making trades right now - I could be wrong. I think Pillar and a rededicated-to-fielding Nimmo will more than suffice out there (Almora too).

I think the Mets fully expect a DH next season - what better 1B/DH combo could you come up with that Pete and Dom? I think they will muddle through 2021 with both, then hopefully get 250 RBIs from them in 2022 in their optimal positions.

  9. Bob, that was an incredible at bat battle. To hang in there like that, Luis made an indelible impression on Rojas and upper management.

  10. Tom, all the discussion about next year having the DH and it being perfect for the Mets assumes Pete’s being happy being a part time player.
I don’t think he will be. Gonna be an issue.

  11. I would be surprised, Rick, if Pete doesn't play everyday, unless he repeats 2020, which I really don't think he will. Juggling this year's at bats without the DH will be a challenge indeed.

  12. Lots of players have stated that playing everyday and being a DH doesn't have the same feel.
And I think Pete has earned the right to play everyday.
Even last year he was coming out of his funk when the short season ended.
We know players are streaky; in good streaks and bad.
Plenty of good players had mediocre seasons last year that would have gotten better if the season rolled on.
And the reverse is true also. We can be overvaluing players off the shortened season.
I wouldn’t want to be messing with Pete off the historic beginning of his career.

  13. Rick Miller, good points - but every season shapes, to a good degree, the following. I'll deal with Pete and Dom situation this next off-season, and if both have a great season, it will shake out in some fashion. Maybe they split the 1B and DH role. Unusual, but that could work. Maybe they get totally overwhelmed with a trade offer and trade one of them. Maybe one falters. Smith seems a little brittle, and when I think of Pete, I remember the time post-injury that Ike Davis hit 27 HRs after the middle of June one year, but was awful for the rest of his career.

Personally, I am expecting huge years with the bat from both in 2021 if they stay healthy. 250 combined RBIs would be not outside the realm. Why? Because they will have lots of runners to drive in.
