Dellin Betances gave up an opposite-field, three-run homer to Ryan Zimmerman, earning boos from the crowd at Clover Park.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) March 4, 2021
The positive: Betances averaged 92 mph with his four-seamer and topped out at 93.5, which is up several ticks from where he was this point last year.
Mets.com:
As Betances, Familia go, so does Mets' 'pen. “Early results have been
mixed. Combined, Familia and Betances threw 54 pitches on Thursday…Familia
delivered 31 of them, managing a scoreless inning despite two walks and a fly
ball to the warning track. (The inning went so long that team president Sandy
Alderson, during an interview with the ESPN booth, quipped: “You guys are
killing me, and so is Jeurys.”) Betances threw 23, allowing a Ryan Zimmerman
three-run homer and recording only two outs before the Mets used this year’s
flexible game rules to prematurely end the inning.”
Takeaways from today's game.

Mets' Luis Rojas breaks down what will set pitchers apart in competition for
fifth rotation spot. “Execution of pitches. Command. Just something
different from the pitcher that we know we have because everyone we have in
camp is talented,” he told reporters on Thursday via Zoom. “All those arms we
have, everyone’s pretty good. There’s competition and sometimes the guy is
better than the other in executing in camp. Sometimes the other pitcher needs
to work on something to get to the point where he’s been before. It’s the
execution part.”

to overlook that Baty was on the older side at 19 for a prep bat in the 2019
Draft and took him 12th overall precisely because of his power potential. The
third baseman provides plus power from the left side and earns extra marks for
his ability to drive the ball the other way. He hit seven homers and slugged
.452 in 51 games across three levels in 2019…”

i FORGOT ABOUT THAT ARTICLE i WROTE, 50 REASONS WHy the Mets will win 90 games in 2015. They sure did - and more.
ReplyDeleteI noticed Matt Blackham threw a perfect inning, fanned 2, and picked up a win this spring. Maybe success will arrive in 2021 for that ex-Met.
I'd like to see Megill out there. If big body Betances falters, maybe equally big body Megill can step in.
Some other ex-Mets in action yesterday Tom. Chasen Shreve got the Win for the Pirates and Hansel Robles got the loss for the Twins.
ReplyDeleteCan you give us 50 reasons why the Mets will win 90 in 2021?
I probably will come up with at least 21 reasons. Soon enough.
ReplyDeleteAnyone get the exit velo on Nimmo's and Pete's HRs? Both of them were lightning bolts.
We may have to start reporting Nimmo's OFF-base %, he gets on so darned much.
Tom,
ReplyDeleteDidn't see exit velocity or distance for Nimmo but Sarah Langs from MLB.com had 112.6 mph and 428 ft for Pete's HR which was included above.
You see it with that clip of the Dodger prospect striking out two guys.
ReplyDeleteThe swing and the miss.
That's the missing ingredient for Familia and Betances and Gsellman, all three.
I admit to a soft spot for Jeurys -- I am rooting for him -- and I think if he can get into a groove he will be an effective "good" reliever/workhorse for the Mets. He's never really complemented his hard sinking stuff with another look, so I was glad to hear him say that he would be throwing a high, four-seamer more often. I didn't see much evidence of that yesterday. He struggles to put batters away, the ABs go long, foul balls add up, and the walks follow.
While I'm not super impressed with McWilliams -- guys who don't know where the ball is going worry me -- he did generate the old swing-and-miss.
I liked Shreve last year and still don't know why the Mets let him walk and kept Gsellman (for example).
I've seen bloggers write that the Mets are set with Loup and May in the 7th and 8th. Do they really expect those guys to pitch every game? The last time Loup threw 60 innings was in 2014. May should be good for 60 innings.
We're going to need other guys to throw. Will be good to get Lugo back. But April is a little scary for me right now. I so wish we had signed one more solid guy like Colome to add to this mix.
Jimmy
RE: Nino Espinosa ... 1976 was a great year for TOPPS, and I decided last night on the podcast I'm having a John Milner jersey made! #LGM
ReplyDeleteMack, question:
ReplyDeleteI found myself curious about Phillies #1 overall pick Moniak from the 2016 draft. So I looked up the results from that year and scrolled through the first two rounds. Most of those guys haven't made an impression yet.
The Mets took Dunn (19) and Kay (31) in the 1st round. Interesting to see Will Smith go #32 at catcher. But overall, most guys from that Draft year haven't done much yet. This group was probably hurt by Covid, the lost season, more than any other draft class.
And then there he is, late in the 2nd round, #64 overall, Pete Alonso. Bad defense, questionable body, big power. 2019 NL Rookie of the Year.
What were your thoughts at the time of that Draft? And how do you see it now, based on almost five years of data.
Jimmy
Jimmy
ReplyDeleteI was a big fan of the Mets two picks in the first and thought drafting a first baseman who couldn't field in the second round was too high.
I followed Florida game to game that year. Alonso was a great college bat but his lack of defensive skills made me wonder when we already had a potential Gold Glove candidate in the pipeline.
Jimmy and Mack, I know the alternate pick to Pete Alonso, selected just a few (2?) picks later...was Bo Bichette. We'll see which player is better longer term.
ReplyDeleteI have not been impressed by Kay so far, though it is obviously still early in his career. He had LEFTY going for him. I have not seen a plus pitch, and did not mind in the least seeing him traded away.
ReplyDeleteDunn: Just haven't seen much of this guy, thought he probably profiled as a reliever. Don't really have an informed opinion.
Jimmy
I really don't see much from them at this point in their career and what we got for both of them is our bonus.
