After topping out at 94 mph and going unselected in the Draft as a junior in 2020, Matthew Mikulski has been surging up boards this season thanks to an uptick in velocity and stellar results. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound left-hander is 5-0 with a 0.96 ERA over his first six starts, during which he’s racked up 68 strikeouts (16.2 K/9) against 16 walks in 37 2/3 frames. 

He’s been especially good of late, recording at least 12 strikeouts in four straight starts, including a 16-strikeout performance against St. Bonaventure (4/10) and a two-hit, 12-strikeout shutout against Seton Hall (4/3).

Has punched out 8 through 5 innings. 0 hits. Easy effort

MLB Draft prospect Luke Albright Kent St Baseball has worked through traffic all game with a 90 94 FB, 76 78 CB, 85 88 SL and firm, but effective 84 86 CH. Took a 1 hit shutout into the 5th, but @MiamiOHBaseball now has the bags loaded w/ no outs

Andy Painter looking great tonight. 93-96 with ride, slider showing big as his out-pitch and flashing some really good change-ups. Big stuff from one of the top prep arms in the country

Big start for Andy Painter tonight as he went six no-hit innings and struck out 13. Held mid-90s for the outing, picked up a bunch of Ks with the breaker and turned over a handful of crazy good changeups that play big off the fastball. First-round talent come July.

2021 MLB Draft Profile: Adrian Del Castillo

 

Bottom Line

 

There might not be another team in the MLB that needs a catcher more than the Miami Marlins. The Fish have a huge need for catcher and one of the top catchers in this draft class is right in their backyard.

Castillo is now the 2^nd catcher on my board, behind Henry Davis; however, he is still a solid top 10 pick in the draft.

4-21-21 - BA -

 

As a freshman at Wright State in 2019, Tyler Black put himself on the map.

In a shortened 2020 season, the Canadian infielder struggled in his small sample while battling through a shoulder injury he’d sustained at the end of the previous year. Not long after baseball shut down, Black underwent surgery on his right shoulder to repair a small tear in his labrum, allowing him to begin this year with nine months of recovery and rehab under his belt.

Black is now 24 games into this Raiders season, almost 11 months post-surgery, and he has returned to his freshman form.  The Toronto native is hitting .365/.495/.694 with seven homers, five doubles, a triple, and more walks than strikeouts, while getting in time at both second and third.

Chase Petty waited two years for Tuesday afternoon.

So, the Mainland Regional High School senior pitcher had an immediate reaction when he heard Mustangs coach Billy Kern talk to another player about possibly pitching the final inning of their anticipated matchup with top-ranked Holy Spirit.

The major league first-round draft prospect certainly did. The Somers Point resident finished with a flourish, getting a strikeout on a 98 mph fastball for the final out of the Mustangs’ 5-2 win.

Overall, Petty allowed one hit, struck out 13, walked three and hit a batter. He threw an efficient 89 pitches in seven innings.

Listen, every college needs more pitching; “can never have too much pitching”

BUT if you oversell on arms/velo, it leaves a huge stain on the player resumé - whether it’s a pocket radar, a bad gun setup, or a hot gun. It’s hard to move past that disappointment as a recruiter

Dominic Hamel, RHP, Dallas Baptist—No. 211

 

Hamel ranked as the No. 238 prospect on the BA 500 a year ago after throwing two good games and two poor ones in the shortened 2020 season. Through nine starts in 2020, he’s been terrific, posting a 2.45 ERA over 47.2 innings with Dallas Baptist, while striking out 76 batters (14.4 K/9) and walking 13 (2.5 K/9). His 76 strikeouts are good for eighth among Division I pitchers. While he sits around 92 with his fastball, which was praised as a high-spin pitch a year ago, Hamel has done a nice job this spring manipulating a low-80s slider depending on the count. He has shown good feel to land the pitch for strikes and adds more depth to the offering when he needs to use it as a putaway. It doesn’t look plus, perhaps more of an above-average offering. Hamel has also thrown a mid-80s changeup which has slight running action as well as a low-70s curveball with 11-5 movement and slower arm speed, but he’s missed the strike zone more often with those offerings and primarily has worked off of his fastball/slider combination.

4-20-21 - Detroit Jock City/ -

 

OF Jud Fabian

 

He is in the top ten in the country for home runs as it stands currently with 11 home runs over 32 games played for the Gators. The MLB list has not been updated since the Spring season has begun, so Fabian could very well be higher up on this list than eighth, where he currently sits.
