Mack's Mock Pick #60 - LHP - Mason Albright

Mason Albright

Mack' s spin -

I am very high on the prep star. Hate his height but I love how he pitches.

I expect some team will snatch him up in the second round... like I did here.

36. Mason Albright, LHP, IMG Academy, Bradenton, Fla.

Albright is a smallish (6'0") lefty with excellent feel of average stuff. He has some of the best control and command among the high school class and throws four pitches. If his velocity can tick up as a senior, he could vault up draft boards.

Ht: 5-11 | Wt: 185 | B-T: L-L

Commit/Drafted: Virginia Tech

Age At Draft: 18.6

Previously a lefthander out of the Midwest, Albright transferred to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and will pitch on one of the more loaded prospect teams in the country. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound lefthander is one of the better command arms in the high school class and has shown advanced ability to spot his 88-92 mph fastball. He’s landed the pitch so consistently that some scouts think he is going to have plus command. He runs the fastball up to 94 mph at the top end and also shows good feel for a slider, curveball and changeup. The slider is ahead of the curve and the changeup might be better than both the breaking balls, but he shows good ability to steer his breaking offerings into and out of the zone when he needs to. While there’s not one clear plus pitch in his arsenal, Albright has loud starter traits despite an unorthodox operation that features a flippy, one-piece arm action. With any progress in his velocity, the Virginia Tech commit will climb boards.

72. Mason Albright - LHP

Bio:

Height: 6-1

Weight: 180 lbs

Hits/Throws: L-R

Hometown: Thurmont, MD

School: Catoctin

A lefty with a strong athletic build and excellent deception within his mechanics. Has drawn comparisons to Madison Bumgarner for his mechanics. Features a fastball that will bump 93-94 with armside run. The standout pitch of Albright's arsenal is his slider with sweepy horizontal break. Changeup is still developing but he shows advanced pitchability and sequencing.

PG -

Mason Albright is a 2021 LHP/1B, OF with a 6-0 190 lb. frame from Thurmont, MD who attends Catoctin. Strong athletic build. Long arm action in back that shows the ball to the hitter, high leg lift, extended 3/4's arm slot creates some angle to the plate, occasional pause at the top to vary his tempo and hitters timing, stays on line well with his lower half. Fastball topped out at 94 mph, mostly straight with occasional arm side running life. Big breaking frisbee slider from the same slot as his fastball, has feel for the pitch and throws it for strikes. Developing change up. Knows how to sequence his pitches with maturity and created some uncomfortable at-bats, has the tools already to dominate left handed hitters. Raw stuff has taken a nice jump over the past year

Mason Albright, LHP, FTB/SF Giants Scout Team 2021

Albright was very good, as expected, in his WWBA outing; striking out 4 over 3 innings and showing his usual mix of pitches and feel. His fastball reached 93 mph with excellent angle, especially glove-side, and his curveball/changeup combination still flash above-average. The pitchability stands out and Albright is in line for a heavily-scouted spring at IMG, where he’ll have a chance to continue rising up draft boards.

Prospect Worldwide -

Mason Albright – LHP: Not the biggest pitcher out there, but he wins with stuff, Command (55), and a fantastic feel for pitching. With a Fastball that plays up, getting a natural sinking action from his low release, and consistently works low in the zone. But does show an ability to elevate and get above the eye level of hitters. Extremely tough on LHH with that low arm slot, and pairs it with great extension. Flashes a Plus (60) Curveball that absolutely kills lefties, and shows an ability to backdoor it vs RHH. A Changeup that shows flashes of 55 Grades, but is a League Average offering at present to round out the 3 pitch mix. A consistent performer that doesn’t back down from any hitter filling up the zone.

Prospects Live -

Mason Albright - Southpaw that has serious helium after a stellar summer circuit. He dazzled at the Perfect Game National Showcase in June and continued it in the Area Code Games, showcasing a three pitch mix that is deadly. But his performance in Oklahoma City may have been his best of the summer. In a very quick and efficient inning, he only faced three hitters, inducing a shallow flyout and two strikeouts of Carter Jensen and Drew Gray. The fastball already showcases plus potential, with late armside life in the 88-91 MPH range. His curveball and change-up aren’t far behind, as the curveball has big downward movement in the 76-77 MPH range and located it very well, with the change-up in the same speed range with good fade and sink. He recently enrolled at IMG Academy and has become the second best prep lefty in the class, in my mind.

  1. You had me at Lefty. I’d consider him.

  2. Good 3rd round target though I always rather have 6-4 pitchers.

  3. Just remember Kaleigh McEnany's husband and former Met and lefty Sean Gilmartin was a late 1st round pick with the Braves - he didn't do much in the bigs. Velocit is almost non-negotiable these days.
