Mack's Mock Pick - #64 - SS - Alex Ulloa

Alex Ulloa

Mack's spin -

Ulloa isn't one of the top shortstops in this draft and many project him moving to second soon.

His ++ defensive skills are now highlighted with a growing (no-pop) bat.

Still, he will definitely be a Day 2 pick.

Alex Ulloa

Miami Christian HS SS

Ht: 5-11 | Wt: 180 | B-T: R-R

Commit/Drafted: Oklahoma State

Age At Draft: 18.7

A 5-foot-11, 180-pound shortstop committed to Oklahoma State, Ulloa showed a good feel for hitting over the summer, with an ability to turn around some of the better pitchers in the class. While Ulloa doesn’t have a ton of raw power, scouts think he will be the type of hitter who gets to every bit of the raw power he possesses in games. Ulloa has quick hands in the box with a whippy finish through the ball. There is some swing and miss in his game, but he controls the zone well with a solid understanding of the strike zone and makes pitchers work to get him out. Ulloa has solid actions up the middle with solid-average arm strength and he’s turned in average run times. Scouts believe Ulloa is best suited at second base long term, where he has a chance to be a solid hitter. Without massive tools or a super projectable frame, many teams might prefer to let Ulloa get to campus and prove his hitting ability unless he’s willing to sign somewhere in the middle of the top 10 rounds

Pound for pound, SS Alex Ulloa might have the best bat speed in the 2021 class. The OSU commit is squarely in the conversation to go in the Top 100 picks next July. Scouts love the bat, twitch and explosiveness.

69. Alex Ulloa - SS

Bio:

Height: 5-11

Weight: 180 lbs

Hits/Throws: R-R

Hometown: Cutler Bay, FL

School: Miami Christian

Thick, strong middle infielder with the lateral mobility and hands to suggest a future home up the middle is still do-able. Ulloa presents an extremely strong lower half that helps him showcase impressive bat speed, leveraging his core. Ulloa really showed a loud hit tool this summer and he was able to ascend into a much louder discussion. Another guy lacking much size and arm talent, Ulloa is likely a second baseman, and he'll be another popular name in the first few rounds.

Alex Ulloa, SS, Houston Astros Scout Team

Ulloa hit all summer and always has, performing well with the bat at WWBA in his final PG tourney and showing off some power to boot, something scouts want to see more of. It’s an athletic swing with barrel skills and projectable pop, and he plays a quality middle infield as well. He’s committed to Oklahoma State, and could be a first rounder out of college if he continues performing there as he’s done in his prep career.

Alex Ulloa, SS, Calvary Christian Academy (Fla.) -- A teammate of Andrew Painter, the top prep pitcher in the class, Ulloa got his own name on the radar by going 2-for-2 with a double and triple to go along with three RBIs and a stolen base after showing well during workouts prior to the game. He’s small, but there’s surprising power here with an aggressive approach at the plate. The Oklahoma State recruit is a sparkplug who showed good actions at shortstop.

Alex Ulloa's bat is going to force him into Top 100 discussion come next July. Probably a second baseman at the next level. The bat speed is easy with quick hands. A little Luis Urias in the profile

 PG -

Alex Ulloa is a 2021 SS/IF with a 5-11 180 lb. frame from Cutler Bay, FL who attends Miami Christian. Medium athletic build with good present strength. Right handed hitter, gets coiled well at the plate with a barrel wrap start, long and strong swing with good extension through contact, has some explosiveness in his hands and a positive launch angle, shows his juice when everything is timed up. 7.17 runner, works behind the ball well on defense, has athleticism and good body control, big arm strength when he's set to throw
