Mack's Mock Pick - #74 - RHP - Ben Casperius

Mack's spin -

Casperious is a converted field player who is now the Friday night starter for Connecticut. Fastball up to 95.

Very talented but I wish he was taller.

I currently  have him coming off the board as the 32nd RHP.

UCONN RHP Ben Casperius probably going to be a name called reasonably early in July. Really loose, whippy arm on the mound. Commands the FB 91-95 well glove and arm-side w/run. Flashes a really good tumbling changeup. Slider is tight with depth. Bulldog mentality.

Two and a half years removed from taking the field as North Carolina’s starting third baseman in the College World Series and putting in a game-winning 2-for-5, three RBI night at the plate against eventual champions Oregon State, Ben Casparius is at a different school, in a different state, playing an entirely different role on this year’s UConn baseball team. Now, after an extremely long delay, he’s the Huskies’ Friday starter in a long line of great Friday starters.

Casparius’ transfer saga was rendered all but moot by the COVID-19 pandemic cancelling the season, but for a while, the UConn coaching staff thought he was a lock to start opening day. He had high praise last fall, with head coach Jim Penders touting his “explosive” fastball. “If he throws it bellybutton or higher, it looks like 100 when it’s 93 [mph],” Penders said. His competitive streak and his command of the strike zone are legit, too.

Casparius had to sit out during the 2020 season after transferring from North Carolina to Connecticut. A two-way player for UNC in 2018 and 2019, he hit .260/.348/.323 in 59 games while posting a 3.67 ERA in 27 innings on the mound. His professional upside is greater as a pitcher and he should step into a major role with Connecticut’s starting rotation this spring. This fall he has thrown his fastball in the 91-95 mph range and showed improved secondaries—most notably a better slider and changeup. While Casparius walked more than five batters per nine at UNC, coaches believe his strike throwing is improved as well.
