Mack's Mock Pick - #78 - 3B - Wes Kath

Wes Kath

 Mack's spin -

If you draft Kath, you are doing so because of his ultra-power bat.

Hot corner defense is okay, but could wind up either at first or left.

Reminds me of Brett Baty

92. 3B Wes Kath | School: Desert Mountain HS, AZ | Commit: Arizona State | B / T: L / R | Ht: 6’3 | Wt: 200lbs | Age: 19

Another big riser this spring showing incredible early season Power that he has always posses, but never to the degree he has shown early in 2021. Kath’s bat has been the calling card for some time now, with the looks of at least a league average Hit tool paired with Plus Power from the left side. 3B Profile through and through, an Average Defender at the hot corner, with a capable glove and strong arm to hold down the position with run producer type bat to match. Similar to Mike Moustakas.

Kath was a loud performer throughout the summer showcase circuit and showed a loud enough bat form the left side to propel himself up draft boards. One of the better corner infielders in the prep class, Kath has played shortstop but most scouts believe he has already outgrown the position with a 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame. He has solid glovework and arm strength that should allow him to handle the hot corner, but he’s a below-average runner who lacks the lateral range necessary for shortstop and should only continue adding strength in the future. Even at a corner, there’s a chance for Kath’s bat to profile nicely, as he showed good barrel control and loud exit velocities against some of the top arms in the class and in some of the bigger showcase events. Kath is a projection power bat committed to Arizona State.

1-5-21 - PBR -

Wes Kath is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound left-handed hitting infielder whose best traits are his skills at the plate.

At times, he struggled to hit premium pitching early last summer. He started the summer with a wide stance at the plate but shortened it up as the summer progressed. The change caused him to stand more upright, which improved his timing and made it easier to read the spin on the baseball, Kath said. It also allowed him to experience better results.

Kath currently is more of a contact over power hitter who possesses quick hands and some natural loft in his swing. He has the size and fundamentals to develop more power at the plate as he matures.

Impressive, well-leveraged left-handed swing with natural loft and game power. Might be able to stick at third base, though mobility may force him to 1B or LF. Hit tool flashes at times, but power potential is carrying profile.

Wes Kath is a 2021 3B/RHP/SS with a 6-3 200 lb. frame from Scottsdale, AZ who attends Desert Mountain. Nice athletic build with good present strength and room for more. Left handed hitter, has quick hands and generates bat speed, long and loose swing with a good lift out front for developing power, projects well as a hitter. 7.26 runner, has a nice arm from third base, quick and compact with carry and accuracy. Sound fundamental player with strength projection and a solid bat.

Wes Kath, 3B, CBA Marucci

Kath is coming off a strong tail end of the summer as the Arizona native has an easy to like, loose left-handed stroke with already present barrel skill. He’s lean and athletic with lots of room to add strength and posit some serious power upside given the loft of the swing. Kath has a lot of upside and he hit very well in Fort Myers with a .500 batting average and keen discipline as he’s establishing himself near the top of the position group out of the four corners.

8/4/18 - Kath was the lone offensive bright spot for Team AZ on the day, squaring up two balls against upper 80's arms for hard line drives to center and right-center field. Kath didn't look out of place all week as a 2021 grad and is a certain D1 prospect. The projectable-bodied infielder moves effortlessly on the infield and projects for plus arm strength as his body matures. Kath showed off the arm the day prior, making a throw across the diamond from foul territory that showed easy carry and arrived in plenty of time.
