Mets Games Played On This Date: April 11

 


The Mets played their very first game in franchise history losing to the Cardinals in 1962.  Overall, they have played 46 games on April 11th for a record of 21-25.   This includes an Easter Day Walk-Off from Jerry Grote.

The Colorado Rockies broke a 4-4 tie in the 8th inning against Bobby Parnell.  The big blow was a 2 run HR by Troy Tulowitzki.  The Mets scored 2 in the bottom of the 8th on a 2 run HR by David Wright but came up short in the 7-6 loss.

Baseball Reference: Greg Maddux of the Atlanta Braves is almost flawless for seven innings, combining with a pair of relievers to pitch a one-hitter in a 2 - 0 victory over the New York Mets. The Mets wind up with only one runner against Maddux, Mike Remlinger and John Rocker, when Todd Zeile lines a single about a foot beyond second baseman Quilvio Veras's glove with one out in the 2nd inning.

Vince Coleman doubled in Tom Herr and Rick Cerone to give the Mets a 3-0 lead in support of Walley Whitehurst who went 7 innings allowing just two Montreal runs.

Ex Met Steve Henderson broke a 1-1 tie in the Bottom of the 8th off Jeff Reardon to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead.  The Mets had a chance to tie the game in the 9th when Hubie Brooks and Alex Trevino singled and Doug Flynn bunted them over to 2nd and 3rd.  However, Mike Jorgensen K’d and Mookie Wilson grounded out to end the game.

Jerry Grote breaks a scoreless tie in the 11th inning with a solo HR to give the Mets a Happy Easter Sunday win.  Tom Seaver threw 9 scoreless and Tug McGraw 2 scoreless in relief.  

National Pastime.com: Jerry Grote hits a walk-off homer in the 11th inning off Wayne Granger at Shea Stadium. The New York catcher's game-ending round-tripper accounts for the only run scored in the Mets' 1-0 victory over Cincinnati.

Baseball Reference: The New York Mets play their first game and lose, 11 - 4, to the Cardinals in St. Louis. Gil Hodges and Charlie Neal provide bright spots for the Mets, hitting the first two home runs in the new franchise's history.

Roger Craig went only 3 innings in the Amazin’s debut and allowed 5 runs on 8 hits.  Bob Moorhead also gave up 5 in 3 relief innings. 

National Pastime.com: After being rained out the previous night and with some players getting stuck in an elevator, the Mets make their National League debut in St. Louis, losing to the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, 11-4. The defeat will be the first of a record-setting 120 losses the New York expansion team will suffer this season.
